In this work the orientation distribution function and orientation tensors for semi-concentrated fiber suspensions in converging channel flow were calculated, and the evolutions of the fiber alignment and the bulk effective vis-cosity were analyzed. The results showed that the bulk stress and the effective viscosity were functions of therate-of-strain tensor and the fiber orientation state ; and that the fiber suspensions evolved to steady alignment and tended to concentrate to some preferred directions close to but not same as the directions of local stream-lines. The bulk effective viscosity depended on the product of Reynolds number and time. The decrease of ef-fective viscosity near the boundary benefited the increase of the rate of flow. Finally when the fiber alignment went into steady state, the structural features of fiber suspensions were not dependent on the Reynolds numberbut on the converging channel angle.展开更多

To do so, a Fourier transformation with a complex argument is utilized. We treat all the Matsbara frequencies, including Fermionic and Bosonic frequencies, on an equal footing. It is pointed out that when complex eigenvalues appear, the dissipation of a system cannot simply be ascribed to the pure imaginary part of the Green function. Therefore, the use of the name fluctuation-dissipation theorem should be careful.展开更多

By analyzing the characteristic functions, we obtain that the equilibria of the model are locally stable when some suitable conditions are being satisfied. According to the comparison theorem and iteration technique, the globally asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium is discussed. And, the sufficient conditions of the global stability to the trivial equilibrium and the boundary equilibrium are derived. The study shows that the prey refuge will enhance the density of the prey species, and it will decrease the density of predator species. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to show the efficiency of our main results.展开更多

In addition, many infrastructures are constructed within the unsaturated zone. Therefore, the determination of shear strength of unsaturated soil is crucial in geotechnical design. The soil-water characteristic curve(SWCC) is commonly used to estimate the shear strength of unsaturated soil because the direct measurement is time-consuming and costly. However, the uncertainty associated with the determined SWCC is rarely considered in the estimation of the shear strength. In this paper, the uncertainties of SWCC resulted from different factors are reviewed and discussed. The variability of the estimated shear strength for the unsaturated soil due to the uncertainty of SWCC associated with the best fit process is quantified by using the upper and lower bounds of the determined SWCC. On the other hand, the uncertainties of the estimated shear strength due to different initial void ratios or different confining pressures are quantified by adopting different SWCCs. As a result, it is recommended that the measured SWCC from the conventional Tempe cell or pressure plate needs to be corrected by considering different stress levels in the estimation of the shear strength of unsaturated soil.展开更多

The first model contains four compartments; uninfected target cells, actively infected cells, free virus particles and B cells. The second model is a modification of the first one by including the latently infected cells. The incidence rate, removal rate of infected cells, production rate of viruses and the latent-to-active conversion rate are given by more general nonlinear functions. We have established a set of conditions on these general functions and determined two threshold parameters for each model which are sufficient to determine the global dynamics of the models. The global asymptotic stability of all equilibria of the models has been proven by using Lyapunov theory and applying LaSalle's invariance principle. We have performed some numerical simulations for the models with specific forms of the general functions. We have shown that, the numerical results are consistent with the theoretical results.展开更多
