The earth allocation is a dynamic system affected by various time-space constraints. Based on previous studies, a new method of optimizing this dynamic system as a static one is presented. In order to build a generalized and flexible model of the problem, some man-made constraints were investigated in building the mathematic model. Linear programming and simplex method are introduced to solve the optimization problem of earth allocation. A case study in a large-scale rock-fill dam construction project is presented to demonstrate the proposed method and its successful application shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the method. 展开更多

A single machine-infinite-bus(SMIB) system including the interline power flow controllers(IPFCs) and the power system stabilizer(PSS) controller is addressed. The linearized system model is considered for investigating the interactions among IPFC and PSS controllers. To improve the stability of whole system again different disturbances, a lead-lag controller is considered to produce supplementary signal. The proposed supplementary controller is implemented to improve the damping of the power system low frequency oscillations(LFOs). Imperialist optimization algorithm(ICA) and shuffled frog leaping algorithm(SFLA) are implemented to search for optimal supplementary controllers and PSS parameters. Moreover, singular value decomposition(SVD) method is utilized to select the most effective damping control signal of IPFC lead-lag controllers. To evaluate the system performance, different operating conditions are considered. Reponses of system in five modes including uncoordinated and coordinated modes of IPFC and PSS using ICA and SFLA are studied and compared. Considering the results, response of system without controller shows the highest overshoot and the longest settling time for rotor angel at the different operating conditions. In this mode of system, rotor speed has the highest overshoot. Rotor angel in the system with only PSS includes lower overshoot and oscillation than system without controller. When PSS is only implemented, rotor speed deviation has the longest settling time. Rotor speed deviation in the uncoordinated mode of IPFC and PSS shows lower overshoot than system with only PSS and without controller. It is noticeable that in this mode, rotor angel has higher overshoot than system with only PSS. The superiority of the suggested ICA-based coordinated controllers is obvious compared with SFLA-based coordinated controllers and other system modes. Responses of coordinated PSS and IPFC SFLA-based supplementary controllers include higher peak amplitude and longer settling time compared with coordinated IPFC and PSS ICA-based controllers. This comparison shows that overshoots, undershoots and the settling times are reduced considerably in coordinated mode of IPFC based controller and PSS using ICA. Analysis of the system performance shows that the proposed method has excellent response to different faults in power system. 展开更多

SMART (system-integrated modular advanced reactor) is a small-sized advanced integral reactor with a rated thermal power of 330 MW. It can produce 100 MW of electricity, or 90 MW of electricity and 40,000 t of desalinated water concurrently, which is sufficient for 100,000 residents. SMART technology is a sensible mixture of new innovative design features and proven technologies through a PWR. The enhancement of safety and reliability is realized by incorporating inherent safety features and reliable passive safety systems. The improvement in the economics is achieved through system simplification, component modularization, construction time reduction, and increased plant availability. All technologies and design features implemented into SMART have been proven in industries and/or qualified through the SMART design verification program including comprehensive test and experiments. The full scope of the safety analyses carried out to confirm that the inherent safety-improvement design characteristics and safety systems of SMART ensure reactor safety. After a thorough licensing review, SDA (standard design approval) for SMART was granted on July 4th, 2012 by the Korea NSSC (Nuclear Safety and Security Commission). This marks the first license for an integral-type reactor in the world. This paper presents the SMART characteristics, safety features and technology validation. A new biomass-gasification power plant, of medium-size downdraft type, is presented and discussed in its design features and performance characteristics. Its configuration and overall dimensions, initially conceived for 800 kW, were recently re-tuned, from a functional point of view and on the base of a parallel theoretical analysis, by decreasing to about 400 kW the former nominal power level. This provision, jointly with the basic design choice of adopting a long and amply dimensioned inlet-biomass thermal pretreatment section, turned out quite effective in achieving high gasification temperatures and a low-tar content in the produced gas at fuel-to-air ratios well below the usually imposed ones, to the advantage of the heat value of the product-gas. The paper discusses the numerical analysis results which helped to properly re-adjust the operational parameters of the gasifier and then presents the experimental performance data of the overall power plant including biomass consumption, gasification temperatures, gas production, composition and pollutants content, cold-gas conversion efficiency and global electric efficiency. Special care is devoted to investigating the issue of a significant production of carbon-containing particulate matter in the product gas, which turns out made up of char and fixed carbon much more than of tar species. 展开更多

Among the art-works of Fiumara d'arte, the Pyramid is the last one in order of time. It is a monumental sculpture made of COR-TEN steel, by the artist Mauro Staccioli and it is located on one specific point of the 38th parallel of latitude, on a hill of the northern mountains of Sicily. In this study the architectural and engineering features of land art-works built in this particular plein-air park are examined and discussed. After a general description of Fiumara d'Arte and its significance in the territory, the case of the Pyramid on the 38th parallel is focalized and a discussion of its architectural, artistic and environmental values is reported. Moreover the structural implications in its design and construction are explained, while the worst effects of external actions are underlined by showing the results of the analysis performed on a finite element model of the whole structure. 展开更多

The design incorporates several novel technical solutions: polycarbonate support insulation, mono-stable magnetic actuator, labyrinth pulling insulator, core-type flexible contact and new compact vacuum interrupter (VI). Phases are encapsulated into silicone rubber providing required creepage distance and excellent tracking resistance. These novelties along with extensive modeling of the mechanical and electrical fields followed by design optimization resulted in weight reduction of more than 50% compared with alternatives available in the market. Places of large potentials of sustainable energy production and places of large energy consumption are often very different and separated by large distances across the globe. This paper first discusses potentials of solar technology in terms of global availability using PV (photovoltaic) technology and actual energy production. Solar energy is widely under-used and one way to reduce this is to improve production in low-energy places with high demand: large cities. According to this option, about 40% of the electricity consumption in the built environment could be produced by solar PV systems and energy storage systems. This paper discusses conditions in the built environment and functional and design qualities enabling an increased diffusion of the technologies In a comparative analysis of PV technologies, the criteria taken into account encompass efficiency of the type of solar cell and commercial availability. Special attention is paid to the design features of different PV systems, like flexibility, colour and transparency that might help in their utilization as integrated in building material and ornaments in modem architecture. The same procedure is followed for electricity storage devices. The preliminary conclusion is that at present the freedom of design is largest for a combination of crystalline silicon PV cells and Li-ion batteries. 展开更多

This research explored the English texts linguistic characteristics in the authorized English textbooks through Coh-Melrix 3.0 and intended to provide implications to EFL English textbook design in the future. The results suggest that there is a need to be aware of the weaknesses and strengths from each other: the South Korean English texts display a diversity in noun, verbs, adjectives, the mean number of words before the main verb of the main clause in sentence, TTR and lexical diversity; the Chinese English texts reveal an overlap in lexical level (content words, noun, and sentences) and semantic level (syntactic patterns). 展开更多

The studies on the mechanisms and performances of the mechanical seals in reactor coolant pumps are very important for the safe operations of the pressurized water reactor power plants. Based on the hydrostatic mechanical seal in reactor coolant pumps, an analytical fluid-solid strong-interaction model is proposed in this paper. According to the design features and operafional principles of the seal, an analytical method to calculate the mechanical deformation of the seal assembly is developed based on the ring deformation theory. A strong-interaction algorithm combining the analysis of the mechanical deformation of the seal assembly and flow field between the seal faceplates is utilized, in which the three kinds of equations including the fluid domain, solid domain and coupling action are constituted in the same equations set and all the variables are solved simul- taneously. So the analytical fluid-solid strong-interaction model used for the seal is built. Moreover, the model is verified by the experimental results. Based on the model, the design parameters of the seal are studied. Two different conditions of the general case and fixed seal leakage rate are discussed respectively, and the regularities that the seal behaviors are affected by the parameters of the holding screws on the clamp rings and seal faceplates are obtained. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for performance analysis, design and assemblage of the seal. Compared to the numerical methods, the proposed model has the unique advantages of high efficiency, convenience and easy application of constraints. 展开更多
