The results showed that with early sowing of maize, the maize yield was promoted, and maize was harvested in advance, which reduced the intergrowth period with soybean and guaranteed soybean's proper plant height, larger stem diameter and optimal values of LAI and SLW, so that soybean yield was also increased. The effects of different maize densities on the stem and leaf of soybean mainly were significant before the maize harvest, but soybean yield under high maize density was significantly lower than that under middle and low maize density, and the highest maize yield was under middle density. Based on soybean and maize comprehensive values, the optimum combination of this experiment was sowed on March 21 and planting density was 5.25×10^4 plant/hm^2.展开更多

The results showed that the planting method for fresh edible "faba bean/spring maize+soybean-autumn maize/autumn soybean" was much easier to operate with the input-output ratio of about185.6%, and its yield and economic benefits were 2.09 and 1.83 times of that of the planting mode for three crops a year, significantly improving the agricultural yield and income of farmers. In addition, the cropping index of the planting mode for fresh edible fresh edible "faba bean/spring maize +soybean-autumn maize/autumn soybean" reached up to 350%, and planting faba bean once a year and soybean twice a year could make the biological fixation amount of nitrogen increase 350-450kg/m^2, which equaled to up to 700 kg/m^2 of urea, showing significant ecological and social benefits. Based on the comparison results, the high-yield culture techniques of the planting mode of fresh edible "faba bean/spring maize+soybean-autumn maize/autumn soybean" were summarized.展开更多

Merril ]. [Methods] Zhengdan-958 and Luhuang-1 were used as the testing breeds to study the effects of intercropping patterns on dry matter accumulation and transportation of maize and soybean in Huang-huai-hai. [Results] For maize, the dry matter accumulation amounts per hectare of intercropping was significant higher than that of the monoculture patterns, especial y after silking, when it reached extremely level; while for soybean, the dry matter accumulation amounts before flowering and after flowering of monocropping were al significantly higher than that of the intercropping patterns. For both maize and soybean, the transfer amounts of monocropping were al significantly or extremely significantly higher than that of intercropping; and the transfer ratio of maize intercropping was 0.59% higher than that of maize monocropping, while for soybean, it was 4.74% higher. Fitted dry matter accumulation with Logistic equation, it showed that the difference in maximum dry matter accumulation rate between maize monocropping and intercropping reached significant level, while for soybean, the maximum dry matter accumulation rate and its appearance time as wel as duration time between intercropping and monocropping were al reached significant level. The total land equivalent ratio of intercropping was 1.30. From yield and output value, the total yield of intercropping were 10.97 t/hm2, 0.64% and 326.85% higher than monocropping of maize and soy-bean, respectively. The total output value of intercropping was 25 796.23 yuan/hm2, respectively 12.67% and 104.68% higher than of maize and soybean monocropping. However, no information is available regarding the ecological consequences of the inoculation with PSMs. The effect of inoculation with phosphate-solubilizing fungal (PSF) isolates Aspergillus niger P39 and Penicillium oxalicum P66 on the bacterial communities in the rhizospheres of maize (Zea mays L. 'Haiyu 6') and soybean (Glycine max Merr. 'Heinong 35') was examined using culture-dependent methods as well as a culture-independent method, polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). Compared with the control, the number of culturable microbes for soybean was significantly greater with P39, whereas for maize, the same was significantly greater with P66. In addition, a greater number of microbes were found in the rhizosphere of maize compared with soybean. The fingerprint of DGGE for 16S rDNA indicated that inoculation with PSF also increased bacterial communities, with the P66 treatment having higher numbers of DGGE bands and a higher Shannon-Weaver diversity index compared with P39; the composition of the microbial community was also more complex with the P66 treatment. Overall, complex interactions between plant species and exotic PSMs affected the structure of the bacterial community in the rhizosphere, but plant species were more important in determining the bacterial community structure than the introduction of exotic microorganisms.展开更多

Comparatively speaking, research on NE prediction is still limited and under development. Therefore, it is important to correctly assess NE for further study. In this study, an energy balance trial and a fasting metabolism trial were used to measure the net energy for production (NEp) and the net energy for maintenance (NEm), respectively. Meanwhile, a backward method of multiple linear regression was applied to establish prediction equations for NE. The results showed that corn NE is about 2 times higher than that of soybean meal, due to the efficiency of ME (k) utilization by the ingredients. Meanwhile, AME and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were found to be better predictors for the NE of corn and soybean meal, respectively. Furthermore, Equations 1(R^2=0.993, RSD=0.0091) and 12 (R^2=0.999, RSD=0.0008) were found to be better prediction equations in multiple linear regression analyses for corn and soybean meal, respectively. However, considering the cost of the analytical procedures, the accuracy of the prediction (RSD), and the additional variability or errors due to interlaboratory variance, Equation 4 (R^2=0.990, RSD=0.0109) and Equation 20 (R^2=0.996, RSD=0.0043) were better models for corn and soybean meal, respectively. Nevertheless, these equations for corn and soybean meal should be applied only under similar experimental conditions.展开更多

Maize, beans and cowpeas were intercropped using conventional husbandry practices and the general Coccinellid quantified as follows: Colonies of four Coccinellids, starved for 12 hours to enhance feeding on Aphids were assessed. The effects of weather on the abundance of Coccinellids were also investigated and involved collection of meteorological data from the Busia District Agricultural Office (BDAO) and from Busia Farmers Training Centre (BFTC) and relating them to the abundance and predation values. The predator population was most abundant in the mixed stands of maize and beans (2.33 predators/30 Aphids) as compared to their occurrence in pure stands of cowpeas (0.85 predators/30 Aphids). The genus Cheilomenes spp. was the most ubiquitous predator with a mean of 4.00 individuals/30 Aphids while Hippodamia variegata was the least abundant predator species with a mean of 0.92 individuals/30 Aphids in all the agro-ecosystems. The larvae of Hippodamia variegata were the most bio-efficient, consuming 32.44 Aphids while their adults were the least bio-efficient, consuming 4.22 individuals for a period of 12 hours. The Coccinellids consumed more Aphids at higher aphid densities (24.05 Aphids) than at lower aphid densities (9.44 Aphids) over the same period of time. Rainfall and relative humidity had significant (F = 3.675; P 〈 0.05) effects on the abundance of Coccinellids. Temperature had significant (F = 3.58; P 〈 0.05) effect on the abundance of Coccinellids though at a lower level. Rainfall (r = -0.162) and relative humidity (r = - 0.084) were both inversely correlated with the abundance of Coccinellids. On the other hand, temperature was positively correlated (r = 0.159) with the prevalence of Coccinellids indicating that warmer and drier conditions favoured their multiplication.展开更多

The response of crop antioxidant enzyme system is an early-warning indicator of environmental factors changes. Compared with raw wastewater and used fresh water as controls, this research studied peroxides (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in leaves from maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with pot culture under irrigating with reclaimed water which with secondary and third treatment. The results showed that secondary reclaimed water had some adverse effects on antioxidant system of maize in seedling stage, and the influence decreased in later stage of maize; effect of the third reclaimed water on antioxidant system of maize was not significant. Irrigation with reclaimed water has little influence on antioxidant system of soybean in seedling and reaping stage, but it could bring some oxidative stress in blossom stage. As a result, irrigating maize with second or third reclaimed water is safe to the growth of maize and soybean, but it is suggested that second reclaimed water should not be used in seedling stage of maize and reclaimed water should not be used in the second stage of soybean.展开更多

Four complementary samples were produced from the proportion of maize/soyabean/banana composite flours as 60%: 30%: 10% (B), 60%: 25%: 15% (C), 60%: 20%: 20% (D), 50%: 30%: 20% (E) and Nestle Cerelac was the control sample (A). The formulated diets were subjected to nutritional analysis-along with a commonly used proprietary infant cereal (Nestle Cerelac) as control. Standard chemical methods were used to determine the proximate nutrient composition, some micronutrients and anti-nutritional factors. The samples produced have increased nutrients of fibre that enhances digestibility (2.07%-3.11%), protein and ash contents. The supplementation of up to 20% soybean flour and banana flour recorded the best results in terms of proximate and mineral compositions and compared favourably with the control sample, in terms of sensory evaluation using hedonic method, sample A was most accepted but did not differ significantly from sample D. Therefore, nutritious and acceptable complementary food can be produced from fermented maize, soybean and banana flours. Results of molar ratios of some minerals and anti-nutritional factors in the compounded diets suggest that the anti-nutrients will not pose any serious problem in the usage of the complementary diets. The cost of producing the formulated diets is about N50-N100 (50 cents) per gram cheaper than cerelac. The study has therefore, revealed that with proper selection of local foodstuff, it is possible to prepare nutritious complementary diets that would be acceptable, readily available, affordable and nutritionally adequate.展开更多

This study assessed changes over winter for soil P fractions and other selected chemical properties as affected by tillage and P fertilization. In 1992, a long-term corn(Zea mays L.) and soybean(Glycine max L.) rotational experiment was established in the province of Quebec, Canada. Soil samples(0–15 cm) were collected in fall 2001 and 2007 after a soybean harvest, and in the following spring 2002 and 2008 before corn seeding, in main plots under moldboard plow and no-till managements and selected subplots fertilized with 0, 17.5, or 35 kg P ha-1and 160 kg N ha-1. Soil samples were analyzed for P fractions and other chemical properties to assess changes over winter for 2001–2002 and 2007–2008. Changes over winter of all soil P fractions were significant for the two periods, indicating the occurrence of soil P transformation and movement over winter. The Mehlich-3-extractable Fe, Al, Ca, and Mg decreased during the two studied periods. Tillage had no significant effect on all soil P fractions. The resin-extractable P in 2001–2002 and Na HCO3-extractable inorganic P and Na OH-extractable organic P during the two winters were significantly increased under P fertilization. This study demonstrated that P in cultivated soils changed during winter as a result of changes in labile P fractions possibly due to the solubilization of residual fertilizer P combined with environmental factors.展开更多

The resin-extractable P in 2001–2002 and Na HCO3-extractable inorganic P and Na OH-extractable organic P during the two winters were significantly increased under P fertilization. This study demonstrated that P in cultivated soils changed during winter as a result of changes in labile P fractions possibly due to the solubilization of residual fertilizer P combined with environmental factors.
