Identifying active sites and catalytic mechanism of the oxygen reduction reaction under anhydrous conditions are crucial for the development of next generation proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)operated at a ...Identifying active sites and catalytic mechanism of the oxygen reduction reaction under anhydrous conditions are crucial for the development of next generation proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)operated at a temperature>100℃.Here,by employing density functional theory calculations,we studied ORR on flat and stepped Pt(111)surfaces with both(110)and(100)type of steps.We found that,in contrast to ORR under hydrous conditions,(111)terrace sites are not active for ORR under anhydrous conditions,because of weakened binding of ORR intermediates induced by O*accumulation on the surface.On the other hand,step edges,which are generally not active for ORR under hydrous conditions,are predicted to be the active sites for ORR under anhydrous conditions.Among them,(110)type step edge with a unique configuration of accumulated O stabilizes O_(2)adsorption and facilitates O_(2)dissociation,which lead an overpotential<0.4 V.To improve ORR catalysts in high-temperature PEMFCs,it is desirable to maximize(110)step edge sites that present between two(111)facets of nanoparticles.展开更多

The macro kinetic models of synthesis, hydrolysis and decomposition of PFA were investigated via formic acid-autocatalyzed reaction. It was found that the intrinsic activation energies of PFA synthesis and hydrolysis were 75.2 kJ·mol^-1 and 40.4 kJ·mol^-1 respectively. The observed activation energy of PFA decomposition was 95.4 kJ·mol^-1. The experi-mental results indicated that the decomposition of PFA was liable to occur even at the ambient temperature. Both the spontaneous decomposition and the radical-introduced decomposition contributed to the decomposition of PFA.展开更多
Seasonal and sexual variations as well as the effect of dry feed supplement on total drinking water intake and its utilization were observed in mithun (Bosfrontalis) - a semi-wild animal found in North Eastern Hill ...Seasonal and sexual variations as well as the effect of dry feed supplement on total drinking water intake and its utilization were observed in mithun (Bosfrontalis) - a semi-wild animal found in North Eastern Hill Region (NEHR) of India. In a completely randomized design, twelve adult mithuns (B. frontalis) as per their sex and body weight were assigned in two different rearing systems (free grazing and free grazing with dry concentrate feed supplementation), and ten growing male mithuns as per their body weight assigned in two different levels of dry concentrate feed supplementation (1.o kg and 2.0 kg dry concentrate feeds on green forage based diet) and in two different seasons (summer and winter). It was observed that the environmental temperature had a significant effect on drinking water intake by mithuns. Drinking water consumption (per unit of body weight) was significantly (P 〈 0.05) higher in summer than in winter. Supplementation of concentrate feed on free grazing animals resulted in increase in water consumption. Total water consumption (drinking as well as performed water) was found to be 15.18 litres per 100 kg body weight by growing mithun. Feed dry matter and digestible nutrient intakes by growing mithun were observed to be increased with the increase of supplementation of dry concentrate feed. Roughage to concentrate ratio did not affect the nutrient digestibility. Mithun calves drank an average of 4.30 litres water for each kg of dry matter intake. Metabolic water was significantly (P〈0.01) increased with the increase of supplementation of concentrate feed whereas water turn over, which depends upon the body weight of the animals, did not differ significantly on offering of lower or higher level of dry feed. Faecal water loss of growing mithun was decreased with the increase in intake of concentrate feed and was estimated to be 33 - 46 % of total water intake. Excretion of water through faeces of mithun was about 3.8 % of body weight. It could, therefore, be inferred that water intake by mithun varied with seasons, rearing systems and dry feed consumption. As far as the water nutrition is concerned, it is needed to give an attention while feeding mithun in summer with dry feed supplementation under semi-intensive system of rearing.展开更多

The dry wood image was thoroughly transformed to the shape of the wet wood image prior to calculating the dry weight moisture content. The use of the image- processing algorithm for the dry weight moisture content on density data from the CT-scanning during drying in a controlled high-temperature environment showed that this method is a powerful tool for analyzing the moisture flow inside the wood piece. Furthermore, the new CT-scanner together with the climate chamber gave unique results, as it has not been possible to study high-temperature drying with this method before.展开更多
To better understand the physiological characteristics of the silky starling(Sturnus sericeus), its body temperature(Tb), basal metabolic rate(BMR), evaporative water loss(EWL) and thermal conductance(C) eli...To better understand the physiological characteristics of the silky starling(Sturnus sericeus), its body temperature(Tb), basal metabolic rate(BMR), evaporative water loss(EWL) and thermal conductance(C) elicited by different ambient temperatures(Ta)(5-30 ℃) were determined in the present study. Our results showed that they have a high Tb(41.6±0.1 ℃), a wide thermal neutral zone(TNZ)(20-27.5 ℃) and a relatively low BMR within the TNZ(3.37±0.17 mL O2/g·h). The EWL was nearly stable below the TNZ(0.91±0.07 mg H2O/g·h) but increased remarkably within and above the TNZ. The C was constant below the TNZ, with a minimum value of 0.14±0.01 mL O2/g·h·℃. These findings indicate that the BMR, Tb and EWL of the silky starling were all affected by Ta, especially when Ta was below 20℃ and the EWL plays an important role in thermal regulation.展开更多

In order to verify its potential, t...The paper aims to investigate the potential of a water body to influence in lowering the warmth in the city of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil, due to the evaporative cooling effects. In order to verify its potential, three collecting points of temperature and humidity were placed in an urban area close to the municipal dam. The first one was placed on the dam margin, the second one, 50 m distant of the margin and, the third one, 100 m distant. The data were taken during December 2010 and then compared to the climate data of the Climate Station of CIIAGRO-Integrated Center of Agro Meteorological. The results show that the closer the collection point is to the water body, and the lower is the temperature variation. The humidity taxes verified at the closest point to the water body indicate values higher than those ones collected at the most distant point. The insertion of moisture through the water bodies in an urban environment demonstrated to be a strategy that improved the thermal conditions and has to be considered for urban planners to establish strategies of urban occupation.展开更多

The approach, together with the equation that presents it, includes mathematical descriptions of the density of frozen wood in the hygroscopic diapason, Pw, and of the specific heat capacity of the ice formed from the bounded water in the wood, cbw for the calculation of Pw, cbw and qbw according to the suggested approach a software program has been prepared in the calculation environment of Visual Fortran. Using the program computations have been carried out for the determination ofpw, cbw and qbw, of oak, pine, beech and poplar frozen wood with initial temperature in the range from -20℃ to -2℃, at which the thawing of the ice from the bounded water is completed, and with moisture content in the hygroscopic range during wood defrosting. Based on the obtained results, a very simple and easy for use equation for the calculation of qbw depending only on the wood moisture content and on the content of non-frozen water in the wood at given initial wood temperature has been suggested.展开更多

Stepwise linear regression of 1997 to 1999 monitoring data at each sampling point of Qiandaohu Lake yielded the multivariate regression models presented in this paper. The concentration of Chla as simulation for the year 2000 by the regression model was similar to the observed value. The suggested mathematical relationship could be used to predict changes in the lakewater environment at any point in time. The results showed that SD, TP and pH were the most significant factors affecting Chla concentration.展开更多

The used infilled material is brick. Sustainability can be achieved by replacing the partially used concrete. By saving concrete, the authors save cement, which reduces the green house gases emissions. So it is considered as environment friendly. Since infilled beam acts like a layered member, there needs a theory to analyze it. Method of initial functions is used for the analysis of the infilled RC (reinforced concrete) beams. On the basis of information from the project "Land-surface Processes and their Experimental Study on the Chinese Loess Plateau", we analyzed differences in land-surface water and heat processes during the main dry a...On the basis of information from the project "Land-surface Processes and their Experimental Study on the Chinese Loess Plateau", we analyzed differences in land-surface water and heat processes during the main dry and wet periods of the semiarid grassland growing season in Yuzhong County, as well as the influences of these environmental factors. Studies have shown that there are significant differences in changes of land-surface temperature and humidity during dry and wet periods. Daily average normalized temperature has an overall vertical distribution of "forward tilting" and "backward tilting" during dry and wet periods, respectively. During the dry period, shallow soil above 20-cm depth is the active temperature layer. The heat transfer rate in soil is obviously different during dry and wet periods. During the dry period, the ratio of sensible heat flux to net radiation (H/Rn) and the value of latent heat flux to net radiation (LE/Rn) have a linear relationship with 5-cm soil temperature; during the wet period, these have a nonlinear relationship with 5-cm soil temperature, and soil temperature of 16℃ is the critical temperature for changes in the land-surface water and heat exchange trend on a daily scale. During the dry period, H/Rn and LE/Rn have a linear relationship with soil water content. During the wet period, these have a nonlinear relationship with 5-cm soil water content, and 0.21 m^3 m^-3 is the critical point for changes in the land-surface water and heat exchange trend at daily scale. During the dry period, for vapor pressure deficit less than 0.7 kPa, H/Rn rises with increased vapor pressure deficit, whereas LEIRn decreases with that increase. When that deficit is greater than 0.7 kPa, both H/Rn and LE/Rn tend to be constant. During the wet period, H/Rn increases with the vapor pressure deficit, whereas LE/Rn decreases. The above characteristics directly reflect the effect of differences in land-surface environmental factors during land-surface water and heat exchange processes, and indirectly reflect the influences of cloud precipitation processes on those processes.展开更多
Aims Functional traits are usually used to predict plant demographic rates without considering environmental contexts.However,previous studies have consistently found that traits have low explanatory power for plant d...Aims Functional traits are usually used to predict plant demographic rates without considering environmental contexts.However,previous studies have consistently found that traits have low explanatory power for plant demographic rates.We hypothesized that accounting for environmental contexts instead of focusing on traits alone could improve our understanding of how traits influence plant demographic rates.Methods We used generalized linear mixed-effect models to analyse the effects of functional traits(related to leaf,stem,seed and whole plant),environmental gradients(soil nutrients,water and elevation)and their interactions on the survival dynamics of 14133 saplings and 3289 adults in a 9-ha old-growth temperate forest plot.Important Findings We found that environmental variables,neighbour crowding and traits alone(i.e.main effects)influenced plant survival.However,the effects of the latter two variables varied between saplings and adults.The trait–environment interactions influenced plant survival,such that resource conservative traits increased plant survival under harsh conditions but decreased survival under mild conditions.The elevational gradient was the most important environmental factor driving these effects in our plot.Our results support the hypothesis that functional traits influence plant survival depending on environmental contexts in local communities.These results also imply that one species with limited trait variation cannot occupy all environments,which can promote species diversity.展开更多

文摘On the basis of information from the project "Land-surface Processes and their Experimental Study on the Chinese Loess Plateau", we analyzed differences in land-surface water and heat processes during the main dry and wet periods of the semiarid grassland growing season in Yuzhong County, as well as the influences of these environmental factors. Studies have shown that there are significant differences in changes of land-surface temperature and humidity during dry and wet periods. Daily average normalized temperature has an overall vertical distribution of "forward tilting" and "backward tilting" during dry and wet periods, respectively. During the dry period, shallow soil above 20-cm depth is the active temperature layer. The heat transfer rate in soil is obviously different during dry and wet periods. During the dry period, the ratio of sensible heat flux to net radiation (H/Rn) and the value of latent heat flux to net radiation (LE/Rn) have a linear relationship with 5-cm soil temperature; during the wet period, these have a nonlinear relationship with 5-cm soil temperature, and soil temperature of 16℃ is the critical temperature for changes in the land-surface water and heat exchange trend on a daily scale. During the dry period, H/Rn and LE/Rn have a linear relationship with soil water content. During the wet period, these have a nonlinear relationship with 5-cm soil water content, and 0.21 m^3 m^-3 is the critical point for changes in the land-surface water and heat exchange trend at daily scale. During the dry period, for vapor pressure deficit less than 0.7 kPa, H/Rn rises with increased vapor pressure deficit, whereas LEIRn decreases with that increase. When that deficit is greater than 0.7 kPa, both H/Rn and LE/Rn tend to be constant. During the wet period, H/Rn increases with the vapor pressure deficit, whereas LE/Rn decreases. The above characteristics directly reflect the effect of differences in land-surface environmental factors during land-surface water and heat exchange processes, and indirectly reflect the influences of cloud precipitation processes on those processes.

文摘Aims Functional traits are usually used to predict plant demographic rates without considering environmental contexts.However,previous studies have consistently found that traits have low explanatory power for plant demographic rates.We hypothesized that accounting for environmental contexts instead of focusing on traits alone could improve our understanding of how traits influence plant demographic rates.Methods We used generalized linear mixed-effect models to analyse the effects of functional traits(related to leaf,stem,seed and whole plant),environmental gradients(soil nutrients,water and elevation)and their interactions on the survival dynamics of 14133 saplings and 3289 adults in a 9-ha old-growth temperate forest plot.Important Findings We found that environmental variables,neighbour crowding and traits alone(i.e.main effects)influenced plant survival.However,the effects of the latter two variables varied between saplings and adults.The trait–environment interactions influenced plant survival,such that resource conservative traits increased plant survival under harsh conditions but decreased survival under mild conditions.The elevational gradient was the most important environmental factor driving these effects in our plot.Our results support the hypothesis that functional traits influence plant survival depending on environmental contexts in local communities.These results also imply that one species with limited trait variation cannot occupy all environments,which can promote species diversity.
