The ocean’s thermal inertia is a major contributor to irreversible ocean changes exceeding time scales that matter to human society.This fact is a challenge to societies as they prepare for the consequences of climate change,especially with respect to the ocean.Here the authors review the requirements for human actions from the ocean’s perspective.In the near term(∼2030),goals such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)will be critical.Over longer times(∼2050–2060 and beyond),global carbon neutrality targets may be met as countries continue to work toward reducing emissions.Both adaptation and mitigation plans need to be fully implemented in the interim,and the Global Ocean Observation System should be sustained so that changes can be continuously monitored.In the longer-term(after∼2060),slow emerging changes such as deep ocean warming and sea level rise are committed to continue even in the scenario where net zero emissions are reached.Thus,climate actions have to extend to time scales of hundreds of years.At these time scales,preparation for“high impact,low probability”risks—such as an abrupt showdown of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation,ecosystem change,or irreversible ice sheet loss—should be fully integrated into long-term planning. 展开更多

The microstructures and mechanical properties of an iron-based alloy (Fe-13Cr-3W-0.4Ti-0.25Y-0.30O) prepared by mechanical alloying were investigated with scanning electron microscope,optical microscope,X-ray diffractometer and hardness tester.The results show that the particle size does not decrease with milling time because serious welding occurs at 144 h.The density of the alloy sintered at 1 523 K is affected by the particle size of the powder.Finer particles lead to a high sintered density,while the bulk density by using particles milled for 144 h is as low as 70%.In the microstructures of the annealed alloy,large elongated particles and fine equiaxed grains can be detected.The elongated particle zone has a higher microhardness than the equiaxed grain area in the annealed alloys due to the larger residual strain and higher density of the precipitated phase. 展开更多

Several time series ha... Temperature change plays a crucial role in global change sciences. In the past several decades, comprehensive find- ings have been achieved on temperature change in China for the past 100 years. Several time series have been created to illustrate the averaged surface air temperature for the country. The correlations of these series range from 0.73 to 0.97. It is also achieved in better data quality, wider spatial data coverage, improved homogeneity of time series, and enhanced reliability of findings. The results show an annual mean temperature increase by 0.78±0.27℃ per 100 years in China for the period 1906-2005. After prolonging the period till 2007, it is found that 2007 is rated as the warmest year in the past 100 years. Although all the series, except one, reflect temperature changes in the eastern part of China before the 1930s, they represent the general temperature change in most parts of the country after the 1930s. 展开更多

Under global climate change, drought has become one of the most serious natural hazards, affecting the ecological environment and human life. Drought can be categorized as meteorological, agricultural, hydrological or socio-economic drought. Among the different categories of drought, hydrological drought, especially streamflow drought, has been given more attention by local governments, researchers and the public in recent years. Identifying the occurrence of streamflow drought and issuing early warning can provide timely information for effective water resources management. In this study, streamflow drought is detected by using the Standardized Runoff Index, whereas meteorological drought is detected by the Standardized Precipitation Index. Comparative analyses of frequency, magnitude, onset and duration are conducted to identify the impact of meteorological drought on streamflow drought. This study focuses on the Jinghe River Basin in Northwest China, mainly providing the following findings. 1) Eleven meteorological droughts and six streamflow droughts were indicated during 1970 and 1990 after pooling using Inter-event time and volume Criterion method. 2) Streamflow drought in the Jinghe River Basin lagged meteorological drought for about 127 days. 3) The frequency of streamflow drought in Jinghe River Basin was less than meteorological drought. However, the average duration of streamflow drought is longer. 4) The magnitude of streamflow drought is greater than meteorological drought. These results not only play an important theoretical role in understanding relationships between different drought categories, but also have practical implications for streamflow drought mitigation and regional water resources management. 展开更多

Resonance due to critical slope makes the internal wave generation more effectively than that due to supercritical or subcritical slopes(Zhang et al., 2008). Submarine ridges make a greater contribution to ocean mixing than continental margins in global oceans(Müller, 1977; Bell, 1975; Baines, 1982; Morozov, 1995). In this paper, internal wave generation driven by tidal flow over critical topography is examined in laboratory using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) and synthetic schlieren methods in synchrony. Non-tidal baroclinic velocities and vertical isopycnal displacements are observed in three representative regions, i.e., critical, outward-propagating, and reflection regions. Temporal and spatial distributions of internal wave rays are analyzed using the time variations of baroclinic velocities and vertical isopycnal displacement, and the results are consistent with those by the linear internal wave theory. Besides, the width of wave beam changes with the outward propagation of internal waves. Finally, through monitoring the uniformly-spaced 14 vertical profiles in the x-z plane, the internal wave fields of density and velocity fields are constructed. Thus, available potential energy, kinetic energy and energy fluxes are determined quantitatively. The distributions of baroclinic energy and energy fluxes are confined along the internal wave rays. The total depth averaged energy and energy flux of vertical profiles away from a ridge are both larger than those near the ridge. 展开更多

Nanostructured Fe70Si20Cr10 alloy was produced by high energy planetary ball milling, starting from elemental powders. The structural, microstructural and magnetic properties of the milled powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer and 57Fe M6ssbauer. After 5 h of milling, it is observed the formation of a bcc solid solutions ~t-Fe (Si, Cr). Its grain size decreases with increasing milling time attaining 20 nm after 15 h of milling time. Analysis of M6ssbauer spectra shows an increasing broad magnetic component when the milling time increases. Its mean hyperfme field is about 25.5 T at 15 h of milling. M-H hysteresis loop curves reveal a room temperature ferromagnetic behaviour with a saturation magnetisation reaching 143 emu/g after 15 hours of milling, which is 20% lower than that of bulk iron; i.e., 1800 emu/g, due to effect of alloying elements after the formation of ct-Fe (Si, Cr) solid solution. 展开更多

However, climate change studying its most important parameters has not, at our knowledge, been the subject of a rigorous study. For this purpose this work intends to gather several temperatures ranging between 1980 and 2006 and find a mathematical model that tells us climate changes following changes in temperature during this time interval. Consequently and undesirably, the results confirm firmly the global greenhouse effect affecting our planet, but what seems rather puzzling is the fact that this warming trend has accelerated over time resulting in a changing climate toward warmer periods, for that reason a likely shift in the region of a semi-arid to tropical or arid regime overall, depending mainly on the evolution of the Azores anticyclone. 展开更多

Based on the collation and statistical analysis of flood and drought information in Baoji area from 1368 to 1911, and in the context of climate change, we investigated the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of drought and flood disaster chains in this area during the Ming and Qing dynasties using the methods of moving average, cumulative anomaly and wavelet analysis. The results are as follows:(1) We found a total of 297 drought and flood events from 1368 to 1911 in Baoji. Among these events, droughts and floods occurred separately 191 and 106 times, which accounted for 64.31% and 35.69% of the total events, respectively.(2) We observed distinct characteristics of flood and drought events in Baoji in different phases. The climate was relatively dry from 1368 to 1644. A fluctuant climate phase with both floods and droughts occurred from 1645 to 1804. The climate was relatively wet from 1805 to 1911. Moreover, we observed a pattern of alternating dry and wet periods from 1368 to 1911. In addition, 3 oscillation periods of drought and flood events occurred around 70 a, 110 a and 170 a, which corresponded to sunspot cycles.(3) We also observed an obvious spatial difference in drought and flood events in Baoji. The northern and eastern parts of Weihe River basin were regions with both frequent droughts and floods.(4) The sequential appearance of drought and flood disaster chains in Baoji from 1368 to 1911 was in response to global climate change. It is the first time to document the trilobite Mucronaspis(Songxites) wuningensis and the brachiopod ParomalomenaAegiromenella Assemblage from the Xinkailing Bed(Hirnantian, uppermost Ordovician) in Taoyuan and Cili counties,northwestern Hunan Province. Synecological analysis shows that this is a deep water shelly fauna of South China during the Hirnantian. It lived on the upper Jiangnan Slope in northwestern Hunan, adjacent to the southeast margin of the Upper Yangtze Region, and belongs to the Hirnantia fauna with cool and deep water, and low diversity affinity, similar to its contemporary shelly faunas from the southern Shaanxi Slope adjacent to the north margin of the Upper Yangtze Region, the northern Chongqing depression(new name), and the Jiangxi-Anhui-Jiangsu gentle slope of the Lower Yangtze Region. Paleoecologically,it could be attributed to the BA 4–5 benthic regime(about 60–150 m deep, and deepest to 200 m), and was significantly different from the trilobite M.(S.) mucronata and the typical Hirnantia fauna while the latters may have habited in BA 2–3 benthic regimes(about 5–60 m deep). A new paleogeographic distribution pattern of the Hirnantian shallow and deep water shelly faunas of South China is herein proposed for the first time. Assuming that the depositional rate was constant in northwestern Hunan during the end Ordovician, the duration of the Xinkailing Bed might be only 12 thousand years according to the thickness of the Wufeng Formation and the absolute age values of those relevant graptolitic biozones. Such a short time interval may indicate that the global environmental change during the crisis was much shorter than previously thought, and its influence on the deep water regime was significantly shorter than that on the shallow water regime. 展开更多

The saturated and aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of crude oil samples have been analyzed by using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS) and conventional gas chro- matography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In order to investigate the consistency and discrepancy of the obtained data from the two instruments, some petroleum geochemical parameters have been compared. A comparison of 23 geochemical parameters indicates that 10 parameters are comparable from the two instruments with less than 5% deviations. Therefore, GCxGC-TOFMS is equivalent to conventional GC-MS in some geochemical parameter acquisitions. However, the other 13 parameters are discrepant, including gammacerane / αβ-hopane, Ts/Tm, 2-ethyl-naphthalene / 1-ethyl-naphthalene (ENR), (2, 6-dimethyl-naphthalene +2,7-dimethyl-naphthalene) / 1,5-dimethyl-naphthalene (DNR), etc. Furthermore, compared to GCxGC-TOFMS, some low concentration compounds could not be detected by the conventional GC-MS, which results in the missing of related geochemical data. Normally, this is caused by the limited separation power and peak capacity of the conventional GC column. Besides, the co-eluting peak integrations are also affected significantly due to the incomplete separation of the compounds. Some low concentration compounds might not be detected because of the interference from the baseline noise or from other substances. GCxGC-TOFMS prevails in compound separation against the conventional GC-MS by avoiding co-elution, which achieves more accurate and precise peak area measurement with the presence of a true baseline. So petroleum geochemical parameters obtained from the GCxGC-TOFMS GCxGC-TOFMS may become one of the most effective analytical are more reliable than those from the conventional GC-MS tools for the oil and gas geochemical study. 展开更多

The East China coastal plain is one of the most important Neolithic culture areas in China, where rich archaeological sites including those producing the earliest domesticated rice are observed. It is also a place whe... The East China coastal plain is one of the most important Neolithic culture areas in China, where rich archaeological sites including those producing the earliest domesticated rice are observed. It is also a place where landscape has experienced dramatic evolution during the Holocene when both sea level and climate changed, such that it is an ideal place for studying human-environment interaction. This study investigated over 2000 sites of pre-history and Shang and Zhou Dynasties, with 655 of which being Neolithic ages, by using DEM and GIS methods. The results suggest that the spatial and temporal distribution of Neolithic sites has largely been controlled by landscape evolution(particularly changes in coastal line), which ultimately governed by sea level changes. During early Holocene, Neolithic sites sparsely distributed in the intermountain basins of east Zhejiang Province, far from the influence of ocean. Over the period of 9–7 ka, the coastal plain(including the shelf) was largely submerged,only the feet of low hills to the south and southwest of the study area, and islands protruding the estuary, cradled limited number of settlements with characteristic "maritime components". At about 7 ka, sea level rise decelerated prominently, while sediments supply in the drainage remained high value, the combination of which led to land formation and propagation. Vast space during this period facilitated the growth of settlements in both size and number. In the mean time, however, the coastal plain was vulnerable to extreme environmental events such as storms and flooding owning to its geomorphic nature, which exerted great influence on the rise and fall of Neolithic culture. 展开更多

According to the response characteristics of the solenoid valve, an improved design becomes a necessity. Firstly, the numerical model was established after analyzing the solenoid valve during its start-up and shut-down. Comparing the simulation data with the practical data, it is verified that the numerical simulation model has a high feasibility. Secondly, excitation voltage and spring pre-compression were adjusted respectively, and the response rules after adjusting were investigated. The research of the study shows: the response time tends to be inverse proportional to the excitation voltage during start-up, and it becomes a constant value with the increase of the excitation voltage; the response time is proportional to the spring pre-compression when the solenoid valve starts up, it is inverse proportional to spring pre-compression when the solenoid valve shuts down. And the total response time is a constant value with the increase of the spring pre-compression. Therefore, the value of the excitation voltage and the spring pre-compression should be selected when the curve is becoming flatten. The results of the research can provide the reference to the further development of the solenoid valve. 展开更多

Time constraints for the closing of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the Northern Alxa Region: Evidence from Wuliji granites 被引量:28

The Wuliji pluton in the Northern Alxa Region, Inner Mongolia, is the principal part of Shalazhashan Mountain. It belongs to the Zongnaishan-Shalazhashan Arc Zone, northwestern North China Plate, whose north is Engger Us Ophiolite Belt and south is Qagan Qulu Ophiolite Belt. The pluton was emplaced into Upper Carboniferous-Lower Permian Amushan Formation. According to the research about the original Carboniferous Amushan Formation, the lower and middle sections of the Carboniferous Amushan Formation consist of volcanic, clastic, and carbonate rocks, interpreted to represent the sedimentary association of a volcanic arc and back-arc basin; the upper section of the Amushan Formation is a molasse composed of silty shale, sandstone, gravel-bearing sandstone, and conglomerate. The Wuliji pluton consists mainly of biotite monzonitic granite, amphibole-bearing biotite monzonitic granite, and monzonitic granite. Geochemical analyses show that the pluton has both metaluminous and peraluminous characteristics, and on average has SiO2>70 wt%, Al2O3 >14 wt%, and high contents of Na2O+K2O (8.5 wt%), which define a calc-alkaline series. In addition, REE patterns show enrichment of LREE and weak negative Eu anomalies (δ Eu=0.3-1). Altogether, the samples are depleted in Nb, Ta, Ti, P, Sr, and Ba, and enriched in Rb, Th, and K. These geochemical traits are interpreted to reflect an arc component. A secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb zircon age of the biotite monzonitic Wuliji pluton in the Northern Alxa Region, Inner Mongolia, is 250.8±2.0 Ma (1σ). Samples have ε Nd (t) values between 0.1 and 1.3, which suggests that the granites were derived from mixing between the crust and mantle. Based on the SIMS age and geochemical characteristics, Wuliji granite is interpreted to be a post-collisional granite, the result of mantle-derived melt and assimilated juvenile arc crust. However, according to the newest international stratigraphic classification standard, the upper section of the Amushan Formation is Lower Permian in age, indicating that the back-arc basin had already closed in Early Permian. We conclude that the Paleo-Asian Ocean represented by the Engger Us Ophiolite Belt subducted southward in Late Carboniferous, at the same time that the trench-arc-basin system formed in the Northern Alxa Region. The Paleo-Asian Ocean was closed in Early Permian and the Northern Alxa Region entered a post-collisional period in the Late Permian, as indicated by the Wuliji granites. This suggests that the genesis of the Wuliji granites is consistent with the pluton emplacement at the upper crust, which occurred widely in the northern margin of the North China Plate in Late Carboniferous to Triassic. 展开更多

The boreal spring stratospheric final warming and its interannual and interdecadal variability 被引量:4

Based on the daily NCEP/DOE reanalysis II data,dates of the boreal spring Stratospheric Final Warming(SFW) events during 1979–2010 are defined as the time when the zonal-mean zonal wind at the central latitudes(65°–75°N) of the westerly polar jet drops below zero and never recovers until the subsequent autumn.It is found that the SFW events occur successively from the mid to the lower stratosphere and averagely from the mid to late April with a temporal lag of about 13 days from 10 to 50 hPa.Over the past 32 years,the earliest SFW occurs in mid March whereas the latest SFW happens in late May,showing a clear interannual variability of the time of SFW.Accompanying the SFW onset,the stratospheric circulation transits from a winter dynamical regime to a summertime state,and the maximum negative tendency of zonal wind and the strongest convergence of planetary-wave are observed.Composite results show that the early/late SFW events in boreal spring correspond to a quicker/slower transition of the stratospheric circulation,with the zonal-mean zonal wind reducing about 20/5 m s-1 at 30 hPa within 10 days around the onset date.Meanwhile,the planetary wave activities are relatively strong/weak associating with an out-of-/in-phase circumpolar circulation anomaly before and after the SFW events in the stratosphere.All these results indicate that,the earlier breakdown of the stratospheric polar vortex(SPV),as for the winter stratospheric sudden warming(SSW) events is driven mainly by wave forcing;and in contrast,the later breakdown of the SPV exhibits more characteristics of its seasonal evolution.Nevertheless,after the breakdown of SPV,the polar temperature anomalies always exhibit an out-of-phase relationship between the stratosphere and the troposphere for both the early and late SFW events,which implies an intimate stratosphere–troposphere dynamical coupling in spring.In addition,there exists a remarkable interdecadal change of the onset time of SFW in the mid 1990s.On average,the SFW onset time before the mid 1990s is 11 days earlier than that afterwards,corresponding to the increased/decreased planetary wave activities in late winter-early spring before/after the 1990s. 展开更多

We developed two radiation parameterizations with different resolutions (17-band and 998-band) for perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) using the updated High-resolution Transmission Molecular Absorption (HITRAN) 2004 database and the correlated k-distribution method. We analyzed the impacts of the two radiation schemes on heating rates. Then we studied their instantaneous radiative efficiency, stratospheric adjusted radiative efficiency, global warming potential (GWP), and global temperature potential (GTP), for both clear- and all-sky conditions using a high-resolution radiation scheme. We found that the stratosphere-adjusted radiative efficiencies of C2F6, CF4, and SF6 for the whole sky were 0.346, 0.098, and 0.680 W m^-2 ppbv^-1, respectively. Radiative forcing from the industrial revolution to 2005 was 0.001, 0.007, and 0.004 W m^-2, respectively; and was predicted to rise to 0.008, 0.036, and 0.037 W m^-2, respectively, by 2100, according to emission scenarios provided by the IPCC. The GWPs of C2F6, CF4, and SF6 are 17035, 7597, and 31298, respectively, for a time horizon of 100 years relative to CO2. Their GTPs of pulse and sustained emissions, GTPv and GTPs, are 22468, 10052, and 40935 and 16498, 7355, and 30341, respectively, for a 100-year time horizon. 展开更多

Strategic Mutual Trust from the Perspective of Spatial Blending

As global, regional, national, local and other spatial forms become mutually embedded and interwoven, a new anti-globalization force is shaping a "reverse globalization trend" in an attempt to go beyond the integrated "capital-production-market" model established in the previous globalization era. Amid continuous social change, economic space has seen a reassertion of trade protectionism, while political space is facing the rise of populist parties. Britain's exit from European Union has dealt a heavy blow to the process of European integration, once again empowering national and local levels through traditional sentiments and redefining the international order in the new era of globalization. In this new era, as global economic integration slows down, the Chinese plan of the Belt and Road Initiative focuses on building a "community of shared future for mankind," "with unwavering efforts to advance and guide economic globalization trends." Its open and inclusive strategic content; its strategic orientation of mutual learning; and its strategic aim of development and coexistence on an economic basis under political intermediation and through the guidance of culture highlight the integration of economic space, mutual trust in political space, and inclusiveness incultural space. The spatial extension of the strategic mutual trust of the Belt and Road Initiative originates in rational reflection on fundamental emotional expectations; instrumental sharing of benefit; emotional involvement; and value judgments. Based on the fact that the population along its route are recipients of the values of strategic mutual trust and also makers of its meanings, we can divide the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative into cultural resonance zones, zones that activate the interests of different parties, and zones that promote identification, combining regional nodes and cooperative content. In order to enhance the degree of congruence of strategic mutual trust, we should disseminate these values in a way that combines charm, comprehensiveness and accuracy. 展开更多
