Techniques of gully-specific debris flow hazard assessment develope d in four periods since the end of the 1980s have been discussed in the present paper. The improvement for the empirical assessment method is the sectionalized function transformation for the factor value, rather than the classified logical transformation. The theoretical equation of the gully-specific debris flow haz ard is expressed as the definite integral of an exponential function and its num erical solution is expressed by the Poisson Limit Equation. Current methods for assessment of debris flow hazard in China are still valid and practical. The fur ther work should be put on the study of the reliability (or uncertainty) of the techniques. For the future, we should give a high priority to the relationship b etween debris flow magnitude and its frequency of occurrence, make more developm ents of prediction model on debris flow magnitude, so as to finally reach the go al of assessing the hazard of debris flow by theoretical model, and realize both actuality assessment and prediction appraisal of debris flow. 展开更多

Can the Dominant Trait Indicator Predict Success in a Financial Accounting Principles Course? A Preliminary Look

The test has also been utilized in academia to en... The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test has been widely used in schools and career placement organizations to counsel individuals into compatible career choices. The test has also been utilized in academia to enhance instructor's knowledge of the different learning styles and thus allows them to develop strategies to increase students' learning. The test is a forced-choice self-reporting exam comprised of 126 questions. Based on Jung's theory of personality type, the test seeks to categorize personality types into 16 discrete groups based on the four preference poles (Myers, 1962). The poles are based on the preference for: (1) introversion (I) or extroversion (E); (2) sensing (S) or intuition (N); (3) thinking (T) or feeling (F); and (4)judging (J) or perception (P). Laribee (1994) studied American accounting students and found that certain personality traits were over represented in upper-level accounting courses, while Macdaid, McCaulley, and Kainz (1986) found that the same personality trait groups were over-represented in the profession. Oswick and Barber (1998), however, found no significant relationship between the grade earned in an introductory accounting course and the personality traits as identified by the MBTI with 344 UK-based accounting students. This study investigates the relationship between a student's academic success in a financial accounting principles course and the MBTI personality type indicators. The type distribution of 59 historically black colleges and universities' (HBCU) business administration majors was analyzed and separated into two groups. The groups were then tested to determine if there was a significant difference in the mean grade of the groups in accounting principles. 展开更多

On account of limited knowledge of the breakup of power law liquid film, the process of its disintegration and atomization was studied by using a planar liquid film. A linear stability analysis was adopted to predict the breakup characteristics of the power law film. The predicting formulas of stripping breakup length and diameter of ligament were put forward presently. Through high-speed photography and laser light sheet illumination,different breakup characteristics of flat power law film under different conditions were derived. The characteristic dimension of breakup regimes were defined and extracted. The effects of several parameters(injection pressure,ambient pressure, nozzle structure and fluid property) on the stripping breakup length and spray angle were investigated. The results revealed that increasing both the velocity of liquid film and the ambient pressure facilitated the breakup of film, reduced the stripping breakup length and enlarged the spray angle in different extents. The comparison between theoretical and experimental results was conducted to validate the feasibility of the linear stability theory. 展开更多

Charmed-Hadron Production in Υ(1S) Semi-inclusive Decay

In the framework of the NRQCD factorization formalism,we calculate the decay rate for the process Υ(1 S) → ccgg to the next-to-leading order(NLO) in the relative velocity v of the b quark in the bottomonium rest frame.We also study the momentum distributions of the charm quark and the charmed-hadron in the decay.The momentum distribution of the charmed-hadron is obtained by convolving the charm quark momentum distribution with a fragmentation function of the charm quark into the hadron.In addition,we fit the nonperturbative NRQCD matrix element v 2 Υ through comparing the theoretical prediction with the measurement from the BaBar collaboration for the decay rate of Υ(1 S) → D + X.In return,taking this matrix element as an input parameter,we predict the decay rates as well as the momentum distributions for a collection of charmed-hadrons in the process Υ(1S) → ccgg → hX. 展开更多
