In order to improve the socioeconomic development perspectives of mountain societies, efficient and well-targeted energy strategies should be formed. An important step towards this direction is adequate understanding of local conditions and specific features that affect energy sector. This procedure allows the inclusion of "locality" in energy planning and so, decentralized energy production is facilitated. The present study attempts to determine the particular energy identity of mountainous areas. Greece, which is the second most mountainous country in the EU, has been selected as a case study. Essential features of the mountainous space have been selected, namely altitude, inclination, remoteness, lack of productive activities, old buildings/vernacular architecture, in order to explore their interrelation with the energy sector. Based on literature review and research findings the interaction between mountainous character and energy is outlined. Therefore, a framework of the characteristics of mountain energy identity is composed, which can provide support to the formation of specialized energy policy for mountainous areas. Some of the main findings of the present study include the significantly increased energy loads of mountainous areas, the abundance of renewable energy potential in high – altitude areas, the vulnerability of mountain societies to energy poverty and the difficulties in sitting energy projects in the restricted usable space of mountains. Since the literature regarding mountains and energy is rather poor the present paper aspires to be a step towards highlighting the importance of energy issues for mountain areas and societies. By determining the features of mountain energy identity energy planning in high – altitude areas and so, helping make energy planning more effective, such research works can be parts of sustainable development strategies for mountainous areas.展开更多

Due to the lack of market information on biomass residue supply, we conducted farm focus group survey sessions and empirical field studies to evaluate farmers' willingness to supply crop residues and timeliness of harvesting. Using a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) application, we locate residue supply areas and numerically show that there are enough crop residues to meet the biorefinery's supply needs. Our evidence from farm focus group shows that farmers may not be willing to sell their crop residues because of concerns for labor availability and soil fertility losses. Farmers' decisions to supply crop residues depend on the willingness of a biofuel firm to offer them a contract and ensure price stability. Farmers are unwilling to take any risk in supplying crop residues and they prefer to transfer ownership of residues immediately after harvest and have an external party bale, store and transport the goods. The biofuel firm requires crop residues be collected dry to prevent mold. This will challenge Northern Plains farmers who wait to collect stovers prior to winter.展开更多

If the operation principle of the motor is simple, a drive circuit will also become simple and its production cost will be lower. From the above fact, Minato motor was noticed. In this motor, a unidirectional current flows in the electromagnets. In other words, unidirectional windings are used. In this motor, only strong repulsive force is utilized when a permanent magnet of a rotor and an electromagnet of a stator are adjacent. Hence, torque constant becomes higher and the efficiency of the motor is high. However, an effective value of the electromagnetic current increases because a large current flows in a short period. Therefore, copper loss increases and the efficiency of the motor decreases. In order to solve above defects, a new motor is proposed. From the experiment, it is clarified that the efficiency of the proposed motor is higher than that of the commercial motors.展开更多
