Methods: During April 1997 to April 1999, 98 cases of hlng cancer were surgically treated. The tumor specimens of the patients were stained by NE markers, i.e. neuron specific enolase (NSE) and synaptophysin (SY). The intensity of NE markers reaction was divided as "+". "++". "+++" scale groups. The same specimens were also examined under an electron microscope for the specific neuroendocrine granules. All enrolled patients were followed up for 36 months, and the longest follow-up time was 60 months. The COX proportional hazard model multivariate analysis was applied to observe the relationship between the NSCLE-NE and the patients' postoperative survival. Results: In 91 cases of NSCLC, 63.7% (58/91) were positive for NE stain reaction. Among them, 59.3% (54/91) were positive for NSE and 24.1% (22/91) for SY. 48.4% (44/91) were considered as NSCLC-NE by the combination of NE inarker stain reaction and electron microscopic examination. COX proportional hazard model lnnltivariate analysis showed that the NSCLC-NE patients' survival was significantly shortened (P=0.048). The following factors were related to NSCLC-NE patients' survival: lung cancer cell differentiation (P=0.006), clinical lung cancer stage (P=0.001), the NE markers reaction (P=0.054). Conclusion: NSCLE-NE is significantly related to the cancer cell differentiation and the patients' postoperative survival. The NE markers should be applied clinically as one of prognostic factors to evaluate the postoperative survival of NSCLC patients.展开更多

We studied the effects of incubation temperature (16-34℃ at salinity 30) and salinity (5-45 at 25℃) on the incubation period and subsequent larval development. In the temperature experiment, the shortest incubation period was 12 days at 34℃, the lower temperature limit was 16~C, the longest mean shell length (1 193+17 pan) occurred at 25℃ and the highest survival rate 72.28%+5.62% was observed at 28℃. In the salinity experiment, the shortest incubation period was 15 days at 25. The salinity tolerance range was 15-40, the longest mean shell length (855-4-9 μm) and the highest survival rate 72.93%~4.85% were both observed at 35. This study demonstrated that, during the egg-mass stage, temperature and salinity regimes influence later growth and survival of larvae. These observations deepen our understanding of the ecology and conservation of natural populations of Rapana venosa.展开更多

Methods: 230 patients with severe TBI were randomly divided into two groups. 115 patients underwent SLTC (10 cm×12 cm) as an SLTC group, and other 115 patients underwent temporo parietal or fronto temporal craniotomy (6 cm×8 cm) according to the position of hematomas as a routine craniotomy (RC) group. Other treatments were identical in two groups. According to Glasgow outcome scale (GOS), the prognosis of the patients was evaluated and the complications were compared between two groups. Results: 27 patients got good outcome and moderate disability ( 23.5 %), 40 severe disability and vegetative survival ( 34.8 %), and 48 died ( 41.7 %) in SLTC group. 21 patients got good outcome and moderate disability ( 18.3 %), 28 severe disability and vegetative survival ( 24.3 %), and 66 died ( 57.4 %) in RC group. The incidence of incision hernia was lower in SLTC group than in RC group. However, the incidence of operative encephalocele, traumatic epilepsy and intracranial infection were not different in two groups. Conclusions: Standard large trauma craniotomy significantly reduces the mortality of patients with severe TBI without serious complications, but does not improve the life quality of the patients.展开更多

Methods: Forty-seven patients were randomly assigned to acupuncture and acupuncture plus medicine groups, 23 cases in the acupuncture group and 24 cases in the acupuncture plus medicine group. The observed course of treatment was 3 months. A Chinese concise SF 36 questionnaire was used to evaluate the quality of life in the different groups of patients before and after treatment. Meanwhile, radioimmunoassay was used to observe the differences in serum genital hormones: follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol (E2) contents between pretreatment and posttreatment in both groups. Results: After treatment, there was a significant difference in quality of life between the two groups and it was better in the acupuncture plus medicine group than in the acupuncture group(P〈 0.01). E2 content increased more markedly in the acupuncture plus medicine group than in the acupuncture group(P〈 0.05). There were no significant differences in FSH and LH contents between the two groups(P 〉 0. 05). Conclusion. Both acupuncture and acupuncture plus medicine can improve the quality of life and increase obviously low E2 content in postmenopausal women. Acupuncture plus medicine raises the patients' quality of life and E2 content more markedly than acupuncture. It is suggested that both acupuncture and acupuncture plus medicine can improve the symptoms, signs, and physical and mental health, raise the quality of life and ameliorate genital-endocrine environment in postmenopausal women, but a combination of acupuncture and medicine has a better effect.展开更多

Seabirds need to both reach profitable areas, which can be located far from the colony, and return to the colony regularly. In this context, flexibility in movement behavior may be crucial for breeding success. During chick-rearing, Procellariformes species can alternate short trips lasting 1-4 days for chick provisioning with longer trips for self-provisioning in what has been called a dual-foraging strategy. We analyzed foraging trips from 136 Scopoli's shearwaters from three Mediterranean colonies tracked with GPS during 6 chick-rearing seasons to assess whether the adoption of a dual fo- raging strategy depends on the quality of habitat surrounding the colony. We found a marked dual-foraging strategy only in birds from the Linosa colony which was the largest colony in terms of breeding pairs and was characterized by having a lower marine habitat quality. Birds from this colony performed foraging trips that extended up to 369 km from the nest and lasted more than 10 days. In general, the decision to perform long lasting trips was triggered by lower values of primary production and higher offspring weight. Contrary to expectation, the decision to feed far from the colony was not related to the parents' weight. At the same time, despite the higher productivity offered by distant areas, the higher proportion of long trips performed by birds breeding in poor areas was not sufficient to maintain the same body mass as the ones breeding in richer areas [Current Zoology 60 (5): 622-630, 2014].展开更多

Here we review the behavioral syndromes literature devoted to spiders, and identify some ways in which behavioral syndromes can impact the function of spiders in ecological communities. We further highlight three general themes within the behavioral syndromes literature for which spiders have served as front running model systems: (1) how trait correlations beget performance trade-offs, (2) the influence that behavioral trait variants have on interspecific interactions and (3) mechanisms that aid in maintaining behavioral variation within-and among-populations. Research on behavioral syndromes con-tinues to grow at an impressive rate, and we feel the success of behavioral syndromes studies in spiders bodes well for their con-tinued prominence.展开更多
