METHODS: One sample of H pylon 60190 (ATCC 49503) was g...AIM: To perform a long culture passage of H pylori without serum, taking into account its cytotoxicity and the presence of the probable new cytotoxic factor. METHODS: One sample of H pylon 60190 (ATCC 49503) was grown on Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) agar containing 0.5% 2,6-di-O-methyl-β-cyclodextrin without any serum, being passaged 70-100 times every 3-4 d for approximately 2 h, while another sample of H pylori contained 70 mL/L fetal calf serum without 2,6-di-O- methyl-β-cyclodextrin. Their supernatant and extract after 16 h in culture were evaluated for changes in cell morphology and for cell viability using HeLa cells. Furthermore, the characteristics of the probable cytotoxic factor in the extract were examined on partial purification studies and its oytotoxicity was evaluated in various human cells. RESULTS: The supernatant and the extract of the bacterium grown on serum-free medium had strong cytotoxicity compared with those grown on serumcontaining medium. They irreversibly damaged HeLa cells without vacuolation that was altogether different from that of the bacterium when grown with serum. Their cytotoxicity was easily measured by cell viability assay. The probable cytotoxic factor partially purified and detected by chromatography had characteristics difference from that of vacuolating toxin and a broad cytotoxicity toward various cell lines. CONCLUSION: Serum-free long culture method of H pylorl makes its supernatant and its extract cytotoxic enough to be easily measured by cell viability assay. The probable cytotoxic factor has a unique characteristic and might be a new cytotoxin.展开更多

Ti alloys have high melting temperature and affinity for oxygen, which makes Ti alloys difficult to be processed. The Co addition reduces the melting temperature and Ti-Co alloy was sintered at lower temperatures. The electrochemical corrosion behaviour of the specimens was examined in the artificial saliva solution. The effects of Co content of the alloy, the p H value and fluoride concentration of the artificial saliva solution on the electrochemical corrosion properties of the specimens were investigated. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the specimens were examined. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate that the corrosion resistance of the specimens decreases at high fluoride concentrations and low p H value. The defect density increases with increasing the fluoride concentration and decreasing the p H value of artificial saliva according to Mott-Schottky analysis.展开更多

Objectives:The study aimed to explore the experiences of nursing undergraduates participating in a simulation-centred educational program in hospice care in Macao,China.Methods:This descriptive qualitative study was b...Objectives:The study aimed to explore the experiences of nursing undergraduates participating in a simulation-centred educational program in hospice care in Macao,China.Methods:This descriptive qualitative study was based on the data collected through semi-structured individual interviews.Seventeen nursing undergraduates in Macao,China who attended the simulation-centred program in hospice care participated in this qualitative from November to December 2020.This program included three parts:introduction to hospice care(2 h),management of terminal symptoms(10 h),and hospice situation simulations(6 h).The interview data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.Results:This study revealed two themes and six sub-themes.Theme 1 was developing competencies in caring for dying patients and their families,which included four subcategories of sensitivity to patients’needs,knowledge of hospice care,skills of symptom control and comfort supply,and communication skills.Theme 2 was improving the ability to self-care and support colleagues,which included two subcategories of reflection on life and death and sharing and supporting among colleagues.Conclusion:This program improved the competency of nursing undergraduates in hospice care and participants’learning experience was good.展开更多

The TMP included hot working in belowβ transus, solution heat treatments at the same temperature and different cooling rates in addition to aging. Depending upon the TMP conditions, a wide range of microstructures with varying spatial distributions and morphologies of equiaxed/elongatedα andβ phases were attained, allowing for a wide range of electrochemical properties to be achieved. The corrosion behavior of the studied alloy was evaluated in a Ringer’s solution at 37 °C via open circuit potential?time and potentiodynamic polarization measurements.展开更多

The testing condition was set at the mimic cardiac r ate of 55 beats/min,75 beats/min,100beats/min and a constant mimic cardiac out put of 4L/min. The mean pressure differences(ΔP),leakage volumes (LEV) and closi ng volumes(CLV) across each valve,and the effective orifice areas(EOA) have bee n analyzed.Results:Within the range of physiology, the ΔP,LEV and CLV were falling as the increasing of mimic cardiac rate,and the extent of variance was larger. The EOA was increasing with the increase of the mimic cardiac rate. It is a differe nt response as the altering of the cardiac rate for the different type of the me chanical prosthetic cardiac valves.Conclusions:The change of the mimic cardiac rate can affect the hydrodynamics of the mechanical prosthetic cardiac valves. The hydrodynamics of the bileaflet valve prosthesis is better than the tilting disc valve.展开更多

Each sentence from the bio...In this work, a hybrid method is proposed to eliminate the limitations of traditional protein-protein interactions (PPIs) extraction methods, such as pattern learning and machine learning. Each sentence from the biomedical literature containing a protein pair describes a PPI which is predicted by first learning syntax patterns typical of PPIs from training corpus and then using their presence as features, along with bag-of-word features in a maximum entropy model. Tested on the BioCreAtIve corpus, the PPIs extraction method, which achieved a precision rate of 64%, recall rate of 60%, improved the performance in terms of F1 value by 11% compared with the component pure pattern- based and bag-of-word methods. The results on this test set were also compared with other three extraction methods and found to improve the performance remarkably.展开更多

Bearing the legacy of the "Enlightenment Rationalism" and the Cartesian division between "matter" and "mind" since the eighteenth century, the Victorian minds had to deal with a contemporary world rapidly unfolding new discoveries in geology, astronomy, biology, and medical sciences. However, these could not completely erase the spiritual belief from the human mind. Rather they sought to reshape their codes in terms of "alternative sciences" like occultism and metaphysical psychiatry (pre-Freudian). This paper seeks to explore the characterisation of the "metaphysical" physician in two novels by Wilkie Collins and Marie Corelli, showing how these figures play a crucial role in negotiating the tensions between science and spiritualism.展开更多

Multiphoton microscopy exhibits nonlinear optical contrast properties, which can make it possible to provide an exceptionally large depth penetration with less phototoxicity. This system becomes more and more an inspiring tool for a non-invasive imaging system to realize "optical biopsy" and to examine the functions of living cells. In this review, we briefly present the physical principles and properties of multiphoton microscopy as well as the current applications in biological fields. In addition, we address what we see as the future potential of multiphoton microscopy for gastroenterologic research.展开更多

The purpose of this paper is to show how the medical school, after making progress towards implementing the University of Cape Town's Language Plan of 2001, is compelled to encourage isiXhosa language developers to develop the necessary and relevant vocabulary responding to the needs of the target users. In some cases, there is a need to adopt terms that are already available and being used by the speech community to align them in the curriculum. Research conducted by analyzing field notes, having plenary discussions with students, observations during clinical practice, reflecting on the curriculum and study materials material. Results indicated the significance of teaching isiXhosa drawing from the medical jargon understood amongst patients, doctors, and nurses. This paper discusses the status enjoyed by isiXhosa to date, language teaching and teaching matters pertaining to isiXhosa, and reflection on whether there is benefit in learning isiXhosa.展开更多

The vitality of nuclear medicine is its ability to translate bench into new clinical application that can benefits the patients. Although nuclear medicine community in China has made significant achievement with a great effort since 1950s, there are many obstacles to future development. 文摘Objectives:The study aimed to explore the experiences of nursing undergraduates participating in a simulation-centred educational program in hospice care in Macao,China.Methods:This descriptive qualitative study was based on the data collected through semi-structured individual interviews.Seventeen nursing undergraduates in Macao,China who attended the simulation-centred program in hospice care participated in this qualitative from November to December 2020.This program included three parts:introduction to hospice care(2 h),management of terminal symptoms(10 h),and hospice situation simulations(6 h).The interview data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.Results:This study revealed two themes and six sub-themes.Theme 1 was developing competencies in caring for dying patients and their families,which included four subcategories of sensitivity to patients’needs,knowledge of hospice care,skills of symptom control and comfort supply,and communication skills.Theme 2 was improving the ability to self-care and support colleagues,which included two subcategories of reflection on life and death and sharing and supporting among colleagues.Conclusion:This program improved the competency of nursing undergraduates in hospice care and participants’learning experience was good.

文摘The influence of thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) on the microstructure and the electrochemical behavior of new metastableβ alloy Ti?20.6Nb?13.6Zr?0.5V (TNZV) was investigated. The TMP included hot working in belowβ transus, solution heat treatments at the same temperature and different cooling rates in addition to aging. Depending upon the TMP conditions, a wide range of microstructures with varying spatial distributions and morphologies of equiaxed/elongatedα andβ phases were attained, allowing for a wide range of electrochemical properties to be achieved. The corrosion behavior of the studied alloy was evaluated in a Ringer’s solution at 37 °C via open circuit potential?time and potentiodynamic polarization measurements.
文摘Objective:To assess the influe nce of mimic cardiac rate on hydrodynamics of the different mechanical prostheti c cardiac valves.Methods:US-made CarboMedics bile aflet valve and China-made Jiuling bileafle t valve and C-L tilting disc valve have been tested in a pulsatile flow simulat or in the aortic position. The testing condition was set at the mimic cardiac r ate of 55 beats/min,75 beats/min,100beats/min and a constant mimic cardiac out put of 4L/min. The mean pressure differences(ΔP),leakage volumes (LEV) and closi ng volumes(CLV) across each valve,and the effective orifice areas(EOA) have bee n analyzed.Results:Within the range of physiology, the ΔP,LEV and CLV were falling as the increasing of mimic cardiac rate,and the extent of variance was larger. The EOA was increasing with the increase of the mimic cardiac rate. It is a differe nt response as the altering of the cardiac rate for the different type of the me chanical prosthetic cardiac valves.Conclusions:The change of the mimic cardiac rate can affect the hydrodynamics of the mechanical prosthetic cardiac valves. The hydrodynamics of the bileaflet valve prosthesis is better than the tilting disc valve.
文摘In this work, a hybrid method is proposed to eliminate the limitations of traditional protein-protein interactions (PPIs) extraction methods, such as pattern learning and machine learning. Each sentence from the biomedical literature containing a protein pair describes a PPI which is predicted by first learning syntax patterns typical of PPIs from training corpus and then using their presence as features, along with bag-of-word features in a maximum entropy model. Tested on the BioCreAtIve corpus, the PPIs extraction method, which achieved a precision rate of 64%, recall rate of 60%, improved the performance in terms of F1 value by 11% compared with the component pure pattern- based and bag-of-word methods. The results on this test set were also compared with other three extraction methods and found to improve the performance remarkably.
文摘The Victorian period experienced, among many other paradoxes, an ongoing tension between science and spirituality. Bearing the legacy of the "Enlightenment Rationalism" and the Cartesian division between "matter" and "mind" since the eighteenth century, the Victorian minds had to deal with a contemporary world rapidly unfolding new discoveries in geology, astronomy, biology, and medical sciences. However, these could not completely erase the spiritual belief from the human mind. Rather they sought to reshape their codes in terms of "alternative sciences" like occultism and metaphysical psychiatry (pre-Freudian). This paper seeks to explore the characterisation of the "metaphysical" physician in two novels by Wilkie Collins and Marie Corelli, showing how these figures play a crucial role in negotiating the tensions between science and spiritualism.
文摘Multiphoton microscopy, relying on the simultaneous absorption of two or more photons by a fluorophore, has come to occupy a prominent place in modern biomedical research with its ability to allow real-time observation of a single cell and molecules in intact tissues. Multiphoton microscopy exhibits nonlinear optical contrast properties, which can make it possible to provide an exceptionally large depth penetration with less phototoxicity. This system becomes more and more an inspiring tool for a non-invasive imaging system to realize "optical biopsy" and to examine the functions of living cells. In this review, we briefly present the physical principles and properties of multiphoton microscopy as well as the current applications in biological fields. In addition, we address what we see as the future potential of multiphoton microscopy for gastroenterologic research.
文摘Surgery as one of the backbone of the clinical medical disciplines, it is a practical subject and the surgery teaching is an important component part of the surgery, is also a medical student to study the surgical aseptic technique and basic knowledge of the surgery and surgical basic skills, the students learned an important part of the theory is applied to clinical practice. Laparoscopy is a new technology, how to apply this new medical technology in surgery, to help students in the limited class hours quickly mastering their own knowledge, this is at present our country facing the most important subject in medical teaching. In view of the present of laparoscopic surgery in school teaching method were discussed and analyzed, and on how to have a purpose, systematic training students to master this skill, and to lay a good foundation of surgical basic skills of students, set up a bridge from slowly towards the classroom teaching of clinical practice.
文摘The Language Policy for Higher Education (2002) and University of Cape Town's Language Plan (2001) suggest that language is central to our social and academic engagement at every level: to our communication with those around us, to our learning, and to our identities. The purpose of this paper is to show how the medical school, after making progress towards implementing the University of Cape Town's Language Plan of 2001, is compelled to encourage isiXhosa language developers to develop the necessary and relevant vocabulary responding to the needs of the target users. In some cases, there is a need to adopt terms that are already available and being used by the speech community to align them in the curriculum. Research conducted by analyzing field notes, having plenary discussions with students, observations during clinical practice, reflecting on the curriculum and study materials material. Results indicated the significance of teaching isiXhosa drawing from the medical jargon understood amongst patients, doctors, and nurses. This paper discusses the status enjoyed by isiXhosa to date, language teaching and teaching matters pertaining to isiXhosa, and reflection on whether there is benefit in learning isiXhosa.
文摘This paper outlines briefly the role of nuclear medicine in life sciences and health care. Molecular imaging by using isotopic tracers can noninvasively visualize the chemistry or hidden process in the cells and tissues inside the body, obtaining "functional" images to provide early information of any disease and revealing the secrets of life. The vitality of nuclear medicine is its ability to translate bench into new clinical application that can benefits the patients. Although nuclear medicine community in China has made significant achievement with a great effort since 1950s, there are many obstacles to future development. Recommended measures are proposed here in an attempt to solve our existing problems.
