[Method] The val- ues of ecosystem function was estimated by market value method, opportunity cost approach, replacement cost method, shadow engineering approach, travel cost method, hedonic pricing method and contingent value method. [Result] With wetland ecosystem service function value totals 4.968 billion yuan, the value of eco-environ- ment regulation and maintenance was the highest, followed by the value of cultural and social function. The value of material production was the least. The values of sub-functions can be concluded by comparison of service function va}ue and pro- portions, as follows: flood mitigation 〉water purification 〉water conservation 〉 tourism&leisure〉material production〉scientific research and education〉water supply〉 biodiversity maintenance〉regulation on atmosphere constituents. [Conclusion] The re- search performed quantitative evaluations on ecosystem service function values of wetlands in Chao Lake and is of significance for specific development and protec- tion of local wetlands.展开更多

A study on PES was conducted in Zomba Mountain Forest (ZMF) catchment area in southern Malawi between August and December 2009. The aim was to assess stakeholders' role that would promote payment for ecosystem services as a management tool. A purposive sampling was used to identify the respondents who were randomly sampled for interviews. The findings show that PES can be used as a management tool in ZMF as there are key stakeholders who benefit from the catchment area in terms of services. While there is moderate level of PES awareness among the community and other stakeholders, the current forest policy does not address PES which may derail implementation of a fully fledged PES arrangement. The study revealed that existing management challenges originate from inadequate funding that ZMF Reserve gets from government. However, this challenge offers opportunities to stakeholders through PES to contribute and participate in conserving ZMF for sustained flow of benefits.展开更多

However, current ef- forts to classify rivers by hydrologic processes may result in a growing temptation to ignore ecological variability across basins Thus, an eco-functional classification is proposed for river management in the Pearl River Basin. This method riews ecological functions as fundamental characteristics of riverine systems and provides a framework for dividing a basin iato eco-specific categories according to the heterogeneity of the primary ecological functions. In addition, we proposed specific environmental flow methodologies corresponding to three typical river reaches of the basin by perceiving the key attributes of flow variability In the upstream region of the West River, flow velocity and wetted perimeter are considered as the key attributes of maintain- ing fish habitat; in a small-sized mountainous tributary of the North river, we choose water surface area to maintain the conti- nuity and biodiversity of the river; while for the aspect of river landscape in the midstream reach of the East R vet, water level is crucial for maintaining the aesthetic value. This research highlights the ecologically relevant heterogeneity that occurs within and among regions of a basin, and is expected to contribute to a simpler and more comprehensive river manage:nent.展开更多
