The modification on HEN of the chilling train for increasing energy recovery does not always coordinate with the minimum shaft work consumption of the corresponding refrigeration system. In this paper, a systematic approach for optimizing low-temperature system is presented through mathematical method and exergy analysis. It presents a set of comprehensive and integrated utilization schemes for the various different kinds of low quality heat energy. With heat pumps, the recycling of the low quality heat energy from the drainage, bathing water and the exhaust air can occur in winter, and in summer, there exists condensed heat of the refrigerating system. When in conjunction with solar collectors, the thermal utilization of solar power can be realized for the whole year. The system achieves mine drainage and bathing water purification and recycling, as well as purifying exhaust air by water spraying. It also satisfies the demands of a whole year's bathing heat for the coal mine, with refrigeration in summer, and heating for the ground house and shaft house in winter. It is able to integrate different kinds of low quality heat energy and low emission drainage and dust, and can replace the traditional boiler heating system. Finally, the system reduces conventional energy consumption and the amount of mine water drainage.展开更多

The analysis, which is carried out with the Excel-based SEPE program, is exemplified with the comparison between single-step and two-steps heat pump setup for providing heat to a floor heating system and for domestic hot water. The paper discusses the use of the concept of exergy efficiency as a measure of success for design of a heat pump application and how the use of information on exergy destruction and temperature levels in different parts of the system add a new perspective to the analysis and the evaluation of the system performance. The paper shows how this information can be used to improve the system configuration and also the operation of the system for given boundary conditions. The following low grade heat energy have been modeled under ISO ambient conditions (international standard organization), i.e. 15 ℃ and 1 bar, to utilize the waste heat energy of a 200 kW micro-turbine combined with a single effect absorption chiller, an organic ranking cycle using R245fa (ORC-R245 fa) as a working fluid, a multi-effect distillation desalination (MED) and a thermal vapor compression MED Desalination unit (TVC-MED). The thermal comparison was carried out based on an energy and exergy analysis in terms of electric efficiency, exergetic efficiency, carbon footprint, and energy utilization factor (EUF). The software package IPSEpro has been used to model and simulate the proposed power plants. As a result, utilizing the exhaust waste heat energy in single-effect absorption chillier has contributed to stabilize ambient temperature fluctuation, and gain the best exergetic efficiency of 39%, while the EUF has reached 72% and the carbon footprint was reduced by 75% in MED and TVC-MED Desalination respectively. The results also reveal that TVC-MED is more efficient than traditional MED as its gain output ratio (GOR) is improved by 5.5%. In addition, ORC-245fa generates an additional 20% of the micro-turbine electricity generation.展开更多

The study is based on the exergetic analysis that points out the location and the magnitude of a system malfunction. Both systems, with NH3 or CO2 operate in two stages. The exergetic analysis gives the direction of the structural optimization. The exergetic analysis has shown that the best structural schematic is not the same for the two agents. The exergetic analysis points out that the largest exergy destruction in the CO2 cycle is due to the throttling process and offers solutions to diminish it.展开更多

The country has good reserves of coal and the solar radiation is sufficiently high to make solar thermal attractive for generating electricity. The paper presents two conceptual coal-fired power station designs in which a solar sub-system augments heat to the feed heaters or to the boiler. The thermal and economic analyses showed enhanced system performance which indicates that solar power could be embedded into existing fossil fuel plants or new power stations. Integrating solar energy with existing or new fossil fuel based power plants could reduce the cost of stand-alone solar thermal power stations, reduce CO2 emissions and produce experience necessary to operate a full scale solar thermal electricity generation facility.展开更多

A small scale experimental system was set up. The collector temperature, the seawater temperature, and the temperature and humidity of the airflow under the collector were measured. Thermal network analysis of the system was carried out. The results show that the airflow is nearly saturated at the entrance of the chimney, and the mean dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures of the airflow have increased by 8.4 ℃ and 9.6 ℃, respectively. The radiation heat transfer between the collector and the sky is the biggest heat loss in the system, which is up to 29.1% on average of the solar energy. However, the water evaporation heat is about 23.6% on average of the solar energy. To reduce the heat loss and enhance the water evaporation, it is necessary to reduce the emissivity and thermal conductivity of the collector and increase the evaporation areas.展开更多

In this study, we measured SR, bi-monthly, over a one-year period in a terrace tea plantation, a forest tea plantation and a secondary forest, in a subtropical mountain area in Xishuangbanna, China. Along with the measurement of SR rates, soil characteristics for each of the land use systems were investigated. Soil respiration rates in the different land use systems did not differ significantly during the dry season, ranging from2.7±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1) to 2.8±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1). During the wet season, however, SR rates were significantly larger in the terrace tea plantation(5.4±0.5 μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)) and secondary forest(4.9±0.4 μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)) than in the forest tea plantation(3.7±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1)).This resulted in significantly larger annual soil CO_2 emissions from the terrace tea and secondary forest, than from the forest tea plantation. It is likely that these differences in the SR rates are due to the 0.5times lower soil organic carbon concentrations in thetop mineral soil in the forest tea plantation, compared to the terrace tea plantation and secondary forest.Furthermore, we suggest that the lower sensitivity to temperature variation in the forest tea soil is a result of the lower soil organic carbon concentrations. The higher SR rates in the terrace tea plantation were partly due to weeding events, which caused CO_2 emission peaks that contributed almost 10% to the annual CO_2 flux. Our findings suggest that moving away from heavily managed tea plantations towards low-input forest tea can reduce the soil CO_2 emissions from these systems. However, our study is a casestudy and further investigations and upscaling are necessary to show if these findings hold true at a landscape level.展开更多

The main issue in designing the TES system is its thermal capacity of storage materials, e.g., insulator. This study is focusing on the potential waste material as an insulator for thermal energy storage applications. The insulator usage is to reduce the heat transfer between two mediums and the capability is measured by its resistance to heat flow. It is needed to obtain optimal materials to energy conversion at the same time reduce the waste generation. Therefore, a small-scale experimental testing of natural cooling process of an insulated tank within a confined room without any forced cooling system, e.g., fan. The testing is repeated by changing the insulator using the potential waste material from natural and industrial waste and also by changing the HTF (heat transfer fluid). The analysis is performed on the relationship between heat loss and the reserved period by the insulator. The results indicate the percentage of period of the insulated tank withstands the heat compared to non-insulated tank, e.g., cotton reserved the period of 14% more than non-insulated tank to withstand the heat transfer of cooking oil to the surrounding. The paper finally justifies the most potential waste material as an insulator in different heat transfer fluids.展开更多

Thirty minutes later, a tsunami reached Tokyo Electric Power Corporation (TEPCO)'s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, and the emergency diesel generators submerged under water. Three units of the reactor experienced meltdown, and hydrogen explosions occurred at reactor houses. The RIKEN Nishina Center (RNC) contributed to the radiation screening effort by providing human resources, instruments, and transportation. The RNC also carried out extraction work and sample tests for soil contamination. Last summer, RIKEN was legally required to save 15% (equivalent to 3.3 MW) of its allocated electricity in its contract, making it extremely difficult to conduct experiments using accelerators. Accelerator operation was thus reduced to a minimum during the first half of the year. The RNC has a gas-turbine-based co-generation system (CGS) with an electrical capacity of 6.5 MW. The CGS was operated non-stop until the end of the year. RIKEN is constructing two sets of CGSs, each with a capacity of 1.5 MW to be commissioned this autumn.展开更多

A conventional method is to control the equipment such that the temperature of hot water supply is maintained at a set-point that may be a fixed value or be compensated against the external temperature. This paper presents a novel scheme that can determine the optimal set-point of hot water supply that maximizes the energy efficiency whilst providing sufficient heating capacity to the load. This scheme is based on Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inferential System. The aim of this study is to improve the overall performance of district heating systems.展开更多

For SiC whisker synthesis, the starting powder mix- ture is obtained by milling short carbon fibers with the white ashes of rice hulls. Calcina:ion in argon, together with the subse- quent purification process, results in a high yield of SiC whiskers, which possess a diameter of 200-400 nm and a length of several tens of microns. The formation of the whiskers is discussed according to VS growth mechanism. Convective heat transfer performance in small channel tubes is then studied for fluid systems mixed with those micro-sized SiC whiskers at different concentrations. The heat transfer coefficient of SiC containing fluid can be significantly improved in comparison to the base fluid.展开更多

This paper presents a novel scheme that can determine the optimal set-point of hot water supply that maximizes the energy efficiency whilst providing sufficient heating capacity to the load. This scheme is based on Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inferential System. The aim of this study is to improve the overall performance of district heating systems.

文摘This paper presents a simple and cost-effective method for the production of micro-sized silicon carbide whiskers at high yield and the effect on heat transfer enhancement for the whisker laden fluids. The heat transfer coefficient of SiC containing fluid can be significantly improved in comparison to the base fluid.
