This article discusses some theories relating to language learning and motivation. Considerable confidence is placed in the value of movies to enhance the learning of English language. From the author＇s own observation and experiences, movies are used to improve learners＇ motivation academically in three stages in addition to the discussion and evaluation of the activities in the three stares.

Encouraging Active Viewing, Rather Than Passive Watching in the Audio-visual English Class

The present article deals with the effective use of film clips in the classroom to encourage active viewing. It argues that viewing material and activities should meet the needs and interest of learners and lead towards a product that can benefit their language-learning capabilities. The selection of right film clips and the designing of appropriate tasks are discussed in detail.

The Effective of Short Movie Innovation on Pharmacology Knowledge

The integration of compute.r technology in education allows students to have better comprehension of the subject content, and suitable learning material can make learning activity more attractive. The objectives of this development research were the evaluation of short movie production as innovative learning material and the knowledge comparison between traditional learning and learning through short movie. Three licensed pharmacists, i.e., the experts, proofread the screenplay of the movie. The study subjects consisted of 68 public health students--A control group and 31 of whom saw the movie--An experiment group. The results showed that the highest mean score was o^L understanding about the ＂group of anti-bacterial agents＂, while the lowest mean score was on ＂recommendation of time used＂. Evaluation of the short movie innovation showed the highest mean score in the item ＂the film can be used as the objective＇s direction＂ and the lowest mean score in the item ＂the film is usefully material＂. The students who watched the short movie had significantly higher level of knowledge at the end than those who underwent conventional learning （p 〈 0.001）. For future studies, films that are useful for other subject areas should be produced.

Automatic Mid-Level Concepts Clusteringfor Violent Movie Scenes Detection

This paper presents a novel system for violent scenes detection, which is based on machine learning to handle visual and audio features. MKL （Multiple Kernel Learning） is applied so that multimodality of videos can be maximized. The largest features of our system is that mid-level concepts clustering is proposed and implemented in order to learn mid-level concepts implicitly. By this algorithm, our system does not need manually tagged annotations. The whole system is trained on the dataset from MediaEval 2013 Affect Task and evaluated by its official metric. The obtained results outperformed its best score.

Early in the 20th century, Lin Yutang proposed learning English by watching movies, and made a lot of reasons to do so.Contemporary college students are in contact with the flood of information and cultural exchanges have become increasingly frequent.On campus, it also surges wave of watching English movies, movies not only entertainment, but also can train and inspire students＇ interest and enthusiasm for learning English.Videos spoken dialogue is authentic, students can exercise listening, imitating wonderful dialogue to enhance their listening level, reduce hearing misunderstood.There is no doubt that English is the world＇ s most widely used language, learning English is the mission of every student.Only understand English, we can communicate with the world in English.In this paper, combined with the development status in college English listening teaching, and then explore the role of fihn in college English listening teaching.

On the integration of two-dimensional animation and three-dimensional art animation

In recent years, with the level of science and technology progress, largely to promote the development of animation techniques. Animated film is divided into two-dimensional animation and three-dimensional animation, both in the retention feature animated films, based on the performance of each with different strengths, thus forming a different artistic style. Wherein the two-dimensional animation is the most common one is the most basic form of expression in animation technology is relatively mature and complete, but because of the development of animation techniques, two-dimensional animation can not meet the needs of the audience. Thus, the effective combination of two-dimensional animation and three-dimensional animation technology, the advantages of integration between the two is particularly important, so that innovation in the form of screen performance, enhance audio-visual experience. In this paper, two-dimensional animation and three-dimensional animation skills fusion analysis and research, and put forward a number of specific observations, in order to learn.

An Empirical Study of Applying English Films and TV Programs to English-Listening Teaching

This is a study of the feasibility and effects of teaching listening with films and TV programs. The research is a part of the English Learning Program directed by ZHANG Zhen, which is sponsored by Academic Affairs Office of Leshan Normal University. The researcher of the program sought for theretical bases from Krashen＇s Input Hypothesis, the Motivation Theory, the Context Theory, and the Communicative Language Teaching Theory. Then the author introduced a pilot study conducted by utilizing films or TV programs to teach listening from September 2010 till now. The statistic results from the experiment suggest that there is indeed some correlations between teaching listening with films or TV programs and a learner＇s listening comprehension in general in language achievement tests at certain stages. The scores of the students from the experimental group are improved after two years of teaching with the new methods. Analyses and discussions have been done based on a questionnaire and an interview. The results showed that both the teachers and the students had positive attitudes towards teaching listening with films or TV programs. Most of them view this method as an effective way in ELT （English language teaching）, because it provides more opportunities for contextual practice, lower their anxiety; it can also help to motivate them, stimulate their active participation and increase their activities as well. Therefore, this method can be used to cultivate students＇ communicative competence. Consequently, we can draw the conclusion that this method has some advantages over teaching listening with the pre-taped materials in New College English. It may play an important role in ELT, especially in listening teaching. Based on the statistic analyses and the survey, some activities and techniques are provided for the teacher on how to teach listening with films or TV programs. The roles that an English teacher plays in this method are illustrated at the end of the thesis.

From a social constructivist perspective, this study explores Chinese EFL learners' identity construction in their engagement with English songs and movies. Analysis of English journals written by 16 first-year English majors from a comprehensive university shows that through investment in various imagined communities (Norton 2001), the learners exercised agency in creating multiple identities beyond the dichotomy between 'target culture' and 'native culture.'
