晚清知识分科与百科全书中的“名学”

学界对近代逻辑学术语、概念和学科体系的考察往往忽视一种重要文类——百科全书。回到清末旧知识体系遭遇冲击、新知识体系尚未建立的历史现场,百科全书自身就代表了知识体系。笔者以黄人编纂《普通百科新大辞典》为主要文本,通过考察名学在百科全书中的定名和名学学科在百科全书中的设立,试图回答名学在晚清新知识体系中如何被构建的问题。

Encyclopedia of Autographa californica Nucleopolyhedrovirus Genes

The Autographa californica multiple capsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) was the first baculovirus for which the complete nucleotide sequence became known. Since then 15 years lapsed and much research has been performed to elucidate putative functions of the annotated open reading frames of this virus and this endeavour is still ongoing. AcMNPV is the most well-known and well-studied baculovirus species, not in the least for its application as a vector for the high-level expression of foreign genes in insect cells. This article is the first monograph of a single baculovirus and gives a current overview of what is known about the 151 AcMNPV ORFs, including (putative) function and temporal and spatial presence of transcripts and protein. To date 60 ORFs have a proven function, another 19 ORFs have homologs for which functions are known in other baculoviruses and 72 ORFs are still enigmatic. This paper should assist the reader in quickly finding the essentials of AcMNPV.

The Labors of the Months and the Zodiac Signs in the Cathedral of Otranto： An Iconographical Interpretation of the Symbols of Labor and Time

In 1163, Archbishop Gionata, Abbot of the Monastery of San Nicola of Casole in Puglia （Apulia）, commissioned Pantaleone, a learned monk and artist from the monastery, to decorate the pavement of the cathedral of Otranto with mosaics. This Italian Romanesque cathedral was dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata or Saint Mary of The Annunciation. In the interior, the floor design in the shape of a tree contains an elaborate biblical program. The encyclopedic narrative of the mosaic symbolically unveils the meaning of the Tree of Life. The ieonography of the pavement＇s program combines biblical and pagan narratives evolving from a natural realm into a heavenly realm. The natural realm begins at the church＇s entrance with the symbolism of the earth-the roots of a tree-expanding through the nave and transept via the tree＇s trunk and its branches, culminating in the apse, at the end of the church, with the foliage oftbe top of the tree. This natural realm meets with the heavenly realm in two ways： at the crossing of the church or at the sacrificial altar, and at the apse of the church. Before reaching the altar or holy area, between the natural realm and the heavenly realm, the zodiac signs with the labors of the months are depicted.

Plato as ＂Idealist,＇ and Aristotle as ＂Realist＂ （？） -Reflecting the idea and the ousia in View of Comparative Philosophy

One can see often in explanations of encyclopedia or lexicons of philosophy that Plato manifested primarily the absolute Idealism, whereas Aristotle verified antagonistically the relevance of realism. It is easy to pick up several parts of their representative works and prove that this thesis is corresponded to the original of Plato and Aristotle. But, in reflections of philosophy, we should not ignore a cautious view, focused just on this starting point： If the above mentioned thesis is used like a slogan, ＂Plato for idealism, Aristotle for realism,＂ as it often is, in the meantime there arises a dogmatic position which fixes our mental and intellectual activity only within the frame, so that everyone begins to reflect on Plato or Aristotle from that starting point in a certain framework. A critical and self-critical view of philosophy may bring this position for a query.

Acquiring synonymous attribute phrases for named entities via online encyclopedia

In this work,an approach is proposed to acquire synonymous attribute phrases of named entities(NEs) from an online encyclopedia.Synonymous attribute phrases are the phrases that express the same attribute with different surface forms for a class of NEs.Specifically,the proposed approach is composed of three stages.Firstly,the entries related to a given NE class are automatically selected from an online encyclopedia.Secondly,attribute phrases are extracted based on the statistics of phrase frequency.Thirdly,synonymous attributes are identified in a pairwise manner through a classification framework combining multiple features.The proposed approach is applied on Baidu Baike,a Chinese online encyclopedia,for four different NE classes.Experimental results show that the approach obtains an average precision of 74%and an average F-value of 65%for the four NE classes.In particular,thousands of synonymous attribute phrase pairs are acquired for each class,which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The Logic of Incarnation： Hegel＇s Use of Plato＇s Philebus in the Shorter Logic and in the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion

Hegel uses Plato＇s classical text, Philebus, in two of his most important texts, the so called Shorter Logics, the first part of the famous Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences and in The Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion. The aim of this article is to analyze how can this two references be read together as to form a relationship between logic and religion in the very heart of Hegelian philosophy. In the first case, Hegel analyzes Plato＇s text within the context of his Doctrine of Being, specially from §§ 89 to 95, which deal with the question of determinate being. In The Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, on the other hand, the reference appears in the 1824 Lectures in a particularly complex chapter called ＂The Transition to the Speculative Standpoint of Religion,＂ in which Hegel affirms not only that such a speculative standpoint is the only one in which religion can be truly grasped, but also that the Christian concept of ＂incarnation of God＂ is the ＂speculative midpoint＂ of religion. It will be argued, therefore, that the ontological question of determination and actuality, as exposed in the Shorter Logics, is fundamental to the metaphysics of Christian Religion as Hegel understands it not only in his Philosophy of Religion, but arguably in his whole philosophy.

Hermeneutical Analysis of Narrative Approach in MacIntyre＇s Moral Enquiry

Alasdair Maclntyre identifies three types of moral research programs in a narrative approach in his works. In the view of hermeneutics, each of the three research programs has a narrative structure： Encyclopedia is a narrative structure with the belief in rational progress; Genealogy constructs its own narrative through the struggle with the past; Thomism tradition is a middle way of the previous two by pursuing truth from the history and particularity, thus avoiding the once-and-for-all rationality of Encyclopedia and the once-and-for-all relativism of genealogy. Narrative, as a living tradition, comprises of tradition-constituted one and tradition-constitutive one. The former is the given narrative we inherit from our predecessors, and the latter is the hermeneutical reinterpretation or reassessment of a tradition, thus showing the continuity among past, present, and future. Through the dialogical narrative especially according to Gadamer＇s I-Thou encounter, MacIntyre achieves a kind of traditional consensus between two traditions through a ＂common language＂ and ＂fusion of horizons.＂ MacIntyre＇s theory is an account of the subjective condition of narrative quest for the truth, which is a good way to keep the integrity of thought in the modern alienation and deconstmction.

Vampire Essentiality Derivation From Religious Beliefs

This paper detracts vampires＇ traits from definitions by famous biblical exegetists and alike. Based on accounts of vampire-synonymous species from the Holy Bible （2000）, The Vampire Book （2010）, Encyclopedia of Vampire Mythology （2010）, etc., it attempts an analysis of essential vampire features derivation from religious beliefs with the aim to amply apprecitate vampire culture and paint evidentially-built vampire portraits as against totally self-imagined traits.

A case study of Chinese double-character vocabularies in modem China--Taking the completive pattern of ＂Exploitation of the Works of Nature＂ as an example

This paper focuses on the research on the vocabularies in the modem Chinese monograph with the division of history into periods and the special classes of the ancient codes and records. ＂Exploitation of the Works of Nature＂ is China＇s first encyclopedia on the production technologies of the agricultural and handicraft industries, published in 1637, with the contents covering many fields of the social production. It can fully reflect the terminologies of various industries in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty and the real situation of the language at that time, which has a very high value of the linguistic research. The article extracts 5573 double-character compound words from the whole book, and uses the method of the quantitative analysis and the qualitative analysis to study the vocabularies of the whole book. Limited by the length of the text, the article carries out the investigation and analysis with the supplementary double-character words as the examples.

An overview of the semantic class of the word groups of the industry terminology in ＂Exploitation of the Works of Nature＂

Since the printing and publication of the first carved edition of＂Exploitation of the Works of Nature＂ in 1637 （the tenth year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty）, it has been 380 years of history. It is an encyclopedia describing China＇s ancient agricultural and handicraft technologies, which occupies an important position in the history of the world science and technology, and the author Song Yingxing is praised by the British expert on the world science and technology history Dr. Joseph Needham as the ＂Chinese Diderot＂. This book is of great value in the language and the cultural researches. From the perspective of the linguistics, the technical terminologies on the agriculture, the handicraft and other disciplines in this paper are classified and analyzed from the semantic point of view, so as to provide an empirical reference for the better dissemination of the book and the diachronic study of the Chinese terminologies.

EncyCatalogRec: catalog recommendation for encyclopedia article completion

Online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia provide a large and growing number of articles on many topics.However,the content of many articles is still far from complete.In this paper,we propose Ency Catalog Rec,a system to help generate a more comprehensive article by recommending catalogs.First,we represent articles and catalog items as embedding vectors,and obtain similar articles via the locality sensitive hashing technology,where the items of these articles are considered as the candidate items.Then a relation graph is built from the articles and the candidate items.This is further transformed into a product graph.So,the recommendation problem is changed to a transductive learning problem in the product graph.Finally,the recommended items are sorted by the learning-to-rank technology.Experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on catalog recommendation in both warm-and cold-start scenarios.We have validated our approach by a case study.
