This study sought to examine the levels of expression (qualitatively and quantitatively)for TEMs in human colon cancer.METHODS: Human colorectal cancer tissues (n = 48)and normal background tissues (n = 31) were obtained after surgery. RNA was extracted from frozen sections for gene amplification. The expression of TEMs (TEM-1to TEM-8) was assessed using RT-PCR and their transcript levels were determined using real-time-quantitative PCR(Q-RT-PCR).RESULTS: TEM-1 (P = 0.01), TEM-7 (P = 0.04), TEM-7R(P= 0.03), TEM-8 (P = 0.001) significantly raised in colon cancer tissues compared with the levels detected in normal background tissues. The expressions of TEM-2 and TEM-6were found to be not significantly different between tumor tissues and normal tissues (P>0.05). Patients who had cancer penetrating into and through the muscularis propria of the bowel wall and developed nodal involvement(Dukes C) exhibited significantly higher levels of TEM -8compared to patients who were node negative (P<0.05).TEM-7 and TEM-7R showed high level of transcripts in Dukes C, but they were not statistically significant.CONCLUSION: The level of the expression of TEM-1,TEM-7, TEM-7R and TEM-8 (but not TEM-2 and TEM-6)were associated with both nodal involvement and disease progression, and may therefore, have a prognostic value in colorectal cancer.展开更多

Relevant pathologic and clinical data were extracted with supplementation from patient charts where available. Non-epithelial tumours were excluded. The total number of appendectomy specimens over the period was also ascertained.RESULTS: Forty-two primary epithelial tumours were identified out of 6 824 appendectomies yielding a prevalence rate of approximately 0.62%. Welldifferentiated neuroendocrine cell tumours (carcinoids, 47.6%) and benign non-endocrine cell tumours (adenomas, 45.2%) were most common with nearly equal frequency. The median age was 43 years, with no sex predilection. Carcinoid tumours occurred in younger patients (mean age 32 years), with a male-to-female ratio of 1.2:1. A clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis was the most common reason for appendectomy (57.1%) and was histologically confirmed in 75% (18 of 24) of cases. In total, 16.7% of cases were diagnosed after incidental appendectomy.CONCLUSION: Appendiceal epithelial tumours are rare in our experience, and are represented principally by carcinoid turnours and adenornas. Carcinoid tumours occurred in younger patients but were slightly more common in men than women. Tumours were not suspected clinically and were diagnosed incidentally in specimens submitted for acute appendicitis supporting the need for histological evaluation in all resection specimens.展开更多

More than half of the adenomyoepitheliomas (AME) are benign, but in rare instances, it may become malignant. Malignant adenomyoepitheliomas almost always occur in the breast and salivary gland. They are unusual in vulva. We report this case and provide some information about symptoms, microstructure, treatment, and a discussion about this kind of disease.展开更多

Results:Kanglaite combined Gemcitabine remarkably decreased the protein expression of bcl-2,raised the expression of Bax,increased the apoptosis rate of the pancreatic cancer and contract the gross tumor volume. Kanglaite greatly decreased the protein expression of VEGF of the tumor cell. Conclusion:Therapeutic efficacy of Kanglaite combined Gemcitabine is far better than separate use of the two medicines in the pancreatic cancer transplantation tumor treatment.展开更多
