Scirpus mariqueter Tang et Zhang is a typical pioneer plant colonizing the bare beaches of the Yangtse River estuary. To explore the life history strategy of the species with reference to environmental physical stress, the biomass allocations to different plant components and some related morphological parameters were examined along an elevational gradient within a salt marsh. Authors found that S. mariqueter performed best at medium elevation within the marsh, with relatively high density of shoot and individual ramet dry mass. Biomass allocation to corm was the highest at low elevations, and the least at high elevations, suggesting that a conservative strategy was adopted by the species to cope with the harsh physical conditions at the low elevation. The investment in rhizome decreased from low to high elevations, while the proportion of inflorescence mass increased, indicating that during the life history, the species shifts from predominant asexual reproduction to predominant sexual reproduction. This may be favourable for the species to colonize larger area, and to spread and persist at a meta_population level. Correlation analyses showed that sexual reproduction was inversely related to growth and asexual reproduction. However, it is difficult to determine the relationship between asexual reproduction and growth possibly because of the varied function of the corms of the species in different life history stages. 展开更多

If the fish was acclimatized, it was still 100% in 42 days. The fish at the salinity of 0 - 16 grew faster than others; feeding rate varied as salinity changed, and the highest one was at salinity of 32 and the lowest one was at the salinity of 16. As to feed conversion efficiency, the highest one was at the salinity of 16, and the lowest one was at the salinity of 24. There were no significant differences among the treatments (P&gt;0.05). [Method]Effects of salinity fluctuation (S0,S3,S6 and S9 represented salinity fluctuations of 0,3,6 and 9 respectivley) and dietary traditional Chinese herbal medicines (0,1%,2% and 4% respectively) on survival,growth and immunity of E.carinicauda were studied,and its experiment lasted for 60 d. [Result]The results showed that specific growth rate,feed conversion efficiency and superoxide dismutase activity of E.carinicauda in the treatment group with 1% dietary traditional Chinese herbal medicine and S6 salinity fluctuation were higher than those in other treatments,which was significantly higher than the treatment groups with S0,S3 and S9 salinity fluctuation at the same adding level of 1% dietary traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The regression analysis indicated that at S0,S3 and S6 salinity fluctuation,the optimal adding level of dietary traditional Chinese herbal medicines in feeds decreased with the increase of salinity fluctuation,accounting for 2.74%,1.77% and 0.51% respectively. At four adding levels of dietary traditional Chinese herbal medicines,the optimal salinity fluctuation of E.carinicauda also decreased with the increase of dietary traditional Chinese herbal medicines in feeds,accounting for 5.26,4.95,3.54 and 1.97 respectively. [Conclusion]Salinity,dietary traditional Chinese herbal medicines and their interactions have a significant effect on survival,growth and immunity of E.carinicauda,which calls for attentions in the breeding. 展开更多

Although prebiotic activities of alginate and agar oligosaccharides isolated from seaweeds have been reported, it remains unknown whether seaweed polysaccharides have prebiotic activity. In this study, we isolated polysaccharides from four species of seaweeds, such as Grateloupia fi licina(GFP), Eucheuma spinosum(ESP), Ulva pertusa(UPP), and A scophyllum nodosum(ANP), and characterized their structures and prebiotic ef fects in vitro. The results showed that these polysaccharides were dif ferent in total sugar and sulfate contents as well as monosaccharide composition. GFP and ESP significantly promoted bifi dobacterium proliferation and 0.1% ESP and 0.4% GFP resulted in the highest proliferation rates of beneficial bacteria, whereas UPP and ANP inhibited the growth of beneficial bacteria at all tested concentrations(0.1%–0.5%). The different behaviors of the four seaweed-originated polysaccharides might be refl ected by differences in monosaccharide composition and structure. Therefore, polysaccharides isolated from GFP and ESP could be utilized as prebiotics. However, more studies must be carried out in vivo. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the effects of moxibustion on the morphology and function of mast cells (MC) at Tianshu (ST25) in rats with trinitro-benzene-sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis. METHODS: A total of 53 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a normal group and experimental group. In the experimental group, a rat model of TNBS-induced colitis was established, and the rats were then randomly divided into a model group, moxi-bustion group, moxibustion plus disodium cromoglycate (M + DC) group and moxibustion plus normal saline (M+ NS) group. Rats in the moxibustion group received suspended moxibustion at bilateral ST25 for 10 min, once a day for 7 d. Rats in the M + DC and M + NS groups were pretreated with disodium cromoglycate and normal saline at bilateral ST25, respectively, and were then concurrently subjected to the same treatment as rats in the moxibustion group. The hematoxy- lin-eosin staining method was used to observe histology of the colon and the toluidine blue-improved method was used to observe mast cells at ST25 acupoint areas. RESULTS: An improvement in colonic injury in the moxibustion group was observed and the degranulation ratio of MC at ST25 acupoint was markedly higher in the moxibustion group than in the model group (45.91 ± 11.41 vs 32.58 ± 8.28, P < 0.05). After inhibition of degranulation of MC at ST25 by disodium cromoglycate, no improvement in colon tissue injury was observed. CONCLUSION: Moxibustion exerted its effect on healing impaired colonic mucosa in rats with TNBS-induced colitis by increasing the degranulation ratio of local MC, but had little effect on the morphology of MC at ST25 acupoint. 展开更多

Advanced nitrogen removal via nitrite from municipal landfill leachate using a two-stage UASB–A/O system 被引量:2

A system consisting of a two-stage up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and an anoxic/aerobic (A/O) reactor was used to treat municipal landfill leachate. Denitrification took place in the first stage of the UASB reactor (UASB1). The chemical oxygen demand of the UASB1 effluent was further decreased in the second stage (UASB2). Nitrification was accomplished in the A/O reactor. When diluted with tap water at a ratio of 1:1, the ammonia nitrogen concentration of the influent leachate was approximately 1200 mg· L^-1, whereas that of the system effluent was approximately 8-11 mg· L^-1, and the corresponding removal efficiency is about 99.08%. Stable partial nitrification was achieved in the A/O reactor with 88.61%-91.58% of the nitrite accumulation ratio, even at comparatively low temperature ( 16℃). The results demonstrate that free ammonia (FA) concentrations within a suitable range exhibit a positive effect on partial nitrification. In this experiment when FA was within the 1-30 mgmg· L^-1 range, partial nitrification could be achieved, whereas when FA exceeded 280 mgmg· L^-1, the nitrification process was entirely inhibited. Temperature was not the key factor leading to partial nitrification within the 16-29 ℃ range. The inhibitory influence of free nitrous acid (FNA) on nitrification was also minimal when pH was greater than 8.5. Thus, FA concentration was a major factor in achieving partial nitrification. 展开更多

In the equatorial western Pacific, iron-manganese oxyhydroxide crusts(Fe-Mn crusts) and nodules form on basaltic seamounts and on the top of drowned carbonate platform guyots that have been swept free of pelagic sediments. To date, the Fe-Mn crusts have been considered to be almost exclusively of abiotic origin. However, it has recently been suggested that these crusts may be a result of biomineralization. Although the Fe-Mn crust textures in the equatorial western Pacific are similar to those constructed by bacteria and algae, and biomarkers also document the existence of bacteria and algae dispersed within the Fe-Mn crusts, the precipitation, accumulation and distribution of elements, such as Fe, Mn, Ni and Co in Fe-Mn crusts are not controlled by microbial activity. Bacteria and algae are only physically incorporated into the crusts when dead plankton settle on the ocean floor and are trapped on the crust surface. Geochemical evidence suggests a hydrogenous origin of Fe-Mn crusts in the equatorial western Pacific, thus verifying a process for Fe-Mn crusts that involves the precipitation of colloidal phases from seawater followed by extensive scavenging of dissolved trace metals into the mineral phase during crust formation. 展开更多

The effect of salinity on the growth and muscle nutritional quality of theExopalaemon carinicauda was studied through testing the survival rate, specific growthrate, muscle nutrient composition, amino acid composition and content by the culturingin different salinities(0-30).The results showed that the survival rate of salinity (0-30)had no significant difference (P>0.05), and the specific growth rates at salinity 15 andsalinity 20 were significantly higher than others(P>0.05); the muscle moisture contentand the crude fat content significantly decreased(P<0.05), while the muscle crudeprotein content significantly increased with an increase in the environment salinity from0 to 30(P <0.05).The crude ash content with salinity increase had a slight increase; themuscle crude protein content (18.2) at salinity 15 was significantly higher than that atsalinity 0,5, or 10(P <0.05), but there was no significant difference between salinity 15and salinity 20(P>0.05). No significant difference was found in total amino acid contentor total essential amino acid content from salinity 0 to 30(P>0.05). Total delicious aminoacid content at salinity 15-30 was significantly higher than those at salinity 0-10(P<0.05), while there was no significant difference from salinity 15 to 30(P>0.05). Theresults suggest that the suitable salinity for muscle nutritive value ranges from 15 to 30,and the Exopalaemon carinicauda can potentially be cultured above the salinity 15. 展开更多

This study examined the effects of dietary α-tocopheryl acetate supplementation on antioxidant enzyme activities and fillet quality in commercial-size Sparus macrocephalus. Three hundred fish [main initial weight (350±12) g] were divided into three groups (E250, E500 and El000) and reared in 9 cages. The fish were fed for 8 weeks with three diets containing different levels of dietary α-tocopheryl acetate (289, 553, 1069 mg/kg). Over the experimental period, fish were fed to satiation and reached a final mean weight of (465±28) g without significant body weight difference and proximate composition difference. Fillet α-tocopherol was significantly (P〈0.05) different between groups, reaching levels of 14.2, 22.1, 30.9 pg/mg fillet for groups E250, E500 and El000, respectively. Total serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased significantly (P〈0.05) in fish fed the diets high in α-tocopheryl acetate, but serum glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity was unaffected. In storage on ice, fillets of fish fed the diets high in α-tocopheryl acetate exhibited significantly lower (P〈0.05) levels of oxidation. These results suggested that increased dietary α-tocopheryl acetate could increase its flesh deposition, increase the activity of SOD and prevent lipid peroxidation ofSparus macrocephalus fillets in retail storage on ice. 展开更多

Hypersaline environments are colonized by communities of microorganisms, which developed adaptations from halotolerant to extreme halophilic lifestyles. Twenty-four halophilic archaeal strains were isolated from three Algerian hypersaline sites, including the solar salterns in Ichekaben and two natural salt lakes at Ouargla and Oran. Almost full-length 16S rRNA genes were amplified using archaeal-specific primers, sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. Three isolates from the salt lake of Ouargla were affiliated to Halorubrum sp., while six isolates from Ichekaben were Natrinema sp.. The remaining strains belonged to the genus Haloarcula, which was identified in the three Algerian sites. A phylogenetic tree of Haloarcula sp. including the two copies of the 16S rRNA gene, showed that two strains group with Haloarcula hispanica, while the other 13 cluster with OHF-1/OHF-2 isolated from French commercial salt. AIM:To investigate the role and potential mechanisms of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) in severe acute peritonitis(SAP).METHODS:Pancreatic acinar cells from Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups:nonsodium deoxycholate(SDOC) group(non-SODC group),SDOC group,and a MSCs intervention group(i.e.,a co-culture system of MSCs and pancreatic acinar cells + SDOC).The cell survival rate,the concentration of malonaldehyde(MDA),the density of superoxide dismutase(SOD),serum amylase(AMS) secretion rate and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) leakage rate were detected at various time points.In a separate study,Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into either an SAP group or an SAP + MSCs group.Serum AMS,MDA and SOD,interleukin(IL)-6,IL-10,and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α levels,intestinal mucosa injury scores and proliferating cells of small intestinal mucosa were measured at various time points after injecting either MSCs or saline into rats.In both studies,the protective effect of MSCs was evaluated.RESULTS:In vitro,The cell survival rate of pancreatic acinar cells and the density of SOD were significantly reduced,and the concentration of MDA,AMS secretion rate and LDH leakage rate were significantly increased in the SDOC group compared with the MSCs intervention group and the Non-SDOC group at each time point.In vivo,Serum AMS,IL-6,TNF-α and MAD level in the SAP + MSCs group were lower than the SAP group;however serum IL-10 level was higher than the SAP group.Serum SOD level was higher than the SAP group at each time point,whereas a significant betweengroup difference in SOD level was only noted after 24 h.Intestinal mucosa injury scores was significantly reduced and the proliferating cells of small intestinal mucosa became obvious after injecting MSCs.CONCLUSION:MSCs can effectively relieve injury to pancreatic acinar cells and small intestinal epithelium,promote the proliferation of enteric epithelium and repair of the mucosa,attenuate systemic inflammation in rats with SAP. 展开更多
