A historical run(1993–2014)of a global,eddy-permitting,hybrid coordinate ocean model(HYCOM)is evaluated against observations.The authors evaluate several metrics in the model,including the spatial distribution of sea...A historical run(1993–2014)of a global,eddy-permitting,hybrid coordinate ocean model(HYCOM)is evaluated against observations.The authors evaluate several metrics in the model,including the spatial distribution of sea surface temperature(SST),the zonally averaged seasonal cycle of SST,the variability of the sea level anomaly(SLA),the zonally and meridionally averaged temperature and salinity,and the equatorial undercurrent.It is found that the simulated seasonal cycle of SST is 0.2–0.8 stronger than observed at midlatitudes.The modeled SST is 0.29°C warmer than the observed for the global ocean.the structure of the subsurface temperature and salinity is similar to the observed.moreover,the variability of SLA exhibits the same pattern as observed.The modeled equatorial undercurrent in the pacific ocean is weaker than observed,but stronger than the ecco reanalysis product.overall,the model can reproduce the large-scale ocean states,and is suitable for analyses seeking to better understand the dynamics and thermodynamics of the upper ocean,as well as ocean variability.展开更多

This paper presents the design and, for the first time, guideline rules, based on simple analytical expressions, to improve the performance of a mechanical energy harvester integrating vertical ZnO piezoelectric nanowires. Additional simulations were carried out to account more realistically for device geometry. The authors discuss the prospects of such an approach, based on design and material improvement.展开更多
We develop and assess a model of the turbulent burning velocity ST over a wide range of conditions.The aim is to obtain an explicit ST model for turbulent combustion modeling and flame analysis.The model consists of s...We develop and assess a model of the turbulent burning velocity ST over a wide range of conditions.The aim is to obtain an explicit ST model for turbulent combustion modeling and flame analysis.The model consists of sub models of the stretch factor and the turbulent flame area.The stretch factor characterizes the flame response of turbulence stretch and incorporates detailed chemistry and transport effects with a lookup table of laminar counterflow flames.The flame area model captures the area growth based on Lagrangian statistics of propagating surfaces and considers the effects of turbulence length scales and fuel characteristics.The present model predicts sT via an algebraic expression without free parameters.We assess the model using 490 cases of the direct numerical simulation or experiment reported from various research groups on planar and Bunsen flames over a wide range of conditions,covering fuels from hydrogen to n-dodecane,pressures from 1 to 30 atm,lean and rich mixtures,turbulence intensity ratios from 0.1 to 177.6,and turbulence length ratios from 0.5 to 66.7.Despite the scattering sT data in the literature,the comprehensive comparison shows that the proposed ST model has an overall good agreement over the wide range of conditions,with the averaged modeling error of 28.1%.展开更多
