The paper attempts to approach the story with the view of existentialism, which flourished at the time when Hemingway began to create this novella. In light of the existentialist views on the relations between being-in-itself and being-for-itself, and existence and essence, the author tends to analyze the interactions of the characters of the story with themselves through the choices they made, which is to be of significance for those who strive to understand Hemingway's work and who try to comprehend human beings and themselves.展开更多

For Nancy, the body becomes the privileged site of both existence and sense in a way that threatens to obscure the logic of exceptional decision that Agamben takes from Carl Schmitt. As an alternative to Nancy's understanding of the body, we can see in Deleuze a series of bodies that works in parallel to a series of sense or language, where sense and body do not get collapsed into each other. At the same time, contemporary continental philosophy resists the idealistic separation of thinking and embodiment. Deleuze calls this relation between sense and body a cut, but we could also consider a parallax, following Slavoj Zizek. Finally, African-American historian of religion Charles H. Long's work complements some of Deleuze's insights in a more explicitly postcolonial context.展开更多

Mukherjee, moves to the USA whose biculturalism favors cultural interactions and fluid identities. Here she experiences the transformative powers of cultural interactions and frees herself and her work from the static power of cultural disjunction. Her personal experience highlights the need of immigrant characters to connect to the mainstream and not to be isolated from it The paper explores the problem of cultural adaptability and integration as experienced by Dimple, the main character in Mukherjee's novel Wife (1975). Based upon contemporary research on cultural and social identity formation, the paper analyses Dimple's inner struggle of identity in the context of her immigrant status, and it relates her ultimately tragic response to loneliness and alienation resulting in cultural disjunction, non-adaptability, and non-assimilation.展开更多

The resulting photon wave-mechanical description leads to scalar products which relate to covariant integration on the light cone. A new correlation matrix displays the spatial localization problem for single photons in an explicit manner in space-time. The correlation matrix essentially is the projection of the time-ordered Feynman photon propagator onto the transverse photon subspace. The present photon wave-mechanical formalism is generalized to two-photon dynamics. In the diamagnetic limit the transverse photon becomes massive in its interaction with matter, and the correlation matrix for massivephoton interaction, which can be used in studies of evanescent-photon mediated couplings, is analyzed. On the basis of the present formalism the existence of a dynamical near-field Aharonov-Bohm effect is predicted.展开更多

Hartree-Fock approximation is applied to obtain the ground state properties with varying spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. We demonstrate that the interplay between the atomic intraorbital Coulomb repulsion and the Hund's rule coupling leads to a remarkable variability of the resulting magnetic anisotropy at a constant nonzero spin-orbit coupling. At the same time, the preferred direction of the ordered antiferromagnetical moment remains unaltered upon changes in the strength of spin-orbit coupling.展开更多

In this paper, we propose a physical implementation of such a correlation with the help of quantum non-demolition measurement, which is realized via the cross-Kerr nonlinear interaction between the signal photon and a probe coherent beam. The indirect measurement on the polarization state of photon is realized by the direct measurement on the phase shift of the probe coherent beam, which enhances the detection efficiency greatly and leaves the signal photon unabsorbed. The maximal violation of the CHSH inequality 4 can be achieved by pre-and post-selecting maximally entangled states. The reason why we can get the post-quantum correlation is that the selection of the results after measurement opens fair-sampling loophole. The fair-sampling loophole opened here is different from the one usually used in the currently existing simulation schemes for post-quantum correlations, which are simulated by selecting the states to be measured or enlarging the Hilbert space. So, our results present an alternative way to mimic post-quantum correlations.展开更多
