Densityvalues were used in the determination of excess molar volumes, V^E.At the same time, the excess viscosity and excess molar heatcapacities were calculated. The values of V^E, η~E and c^E_p werefitted to the Redlich-Kister equation. Good agreements were observed. The excess molar volumes are positive with a large maximum valuelocated in the central concentration range.展开更多

METHODS: Schwann cells/ECM gel solution and PLA nonspinning fibre cloth and PLGA fibres pretreated by collagen, polylysine and ECM were co-cultured. Then the migration and three-dimensional growth of Schwann cells on the fibres were observed under phase contrast microscope and laser scanning confocal microscope. RESULTS: Schwann cell/ECM solution was compounded with PLA nonspinning fibre cloth. With formation of gel, most Schwann cells resided in the fibre net holes, and adhered to the fibres to form a multiplayer-arranged Schwann cell column like Bungner band. Schwann cells could adhere to PLGA fibres and grew and migrated along the fibres. ECM gel could significantly increase the adhering and migrating cell number. CONCLUSIONS: ECM gel can facilitate the adhesion, growth and migration of Schwann cells on the seteroframe. It is a good integrating material for tissue engineering bioartificial nerve.展开更多

Ultrathin yttrium oxide showed excellent per-formance as the dielectric layer in top-gate device geometry. The structure and dielectric constant of the yttrium oxide layers have been carefully studied. The inverse compressibility retrieved from the quantum capacitance agreed fairly well with the theoretical predictions for the e--e interactions in monolayer graphene at different temperatures. We found that electron-hole puddles played a significant role in the low-density carrier region in graphene. By considering the temperature-dependent charge fluctuation, we established a model to explain the round-off effect originating from the e-e interactions in monolayer graphene near the Dirac point.展开更多

Chiral interactions play an important role in biological and physiological process- es, which provides much inspiration for scientists to develop cbiral materials. As a breakthrough from traditional materials, bi- ointerface materials based on chiral polymers have attracted increasing interest over the past few years. Such materials ele- gantly combine the advantages of chiral surfaces and traditional polymers, and provide a novel solution not only for the inves- tigation of chiral interaction mechanisms but also for the design of biomaterials with diverse applications, such as in tissue en- gineering and biocompatible materials, bioregulation, chiral separation and chiral sensors. Herein, we summarize recent ad- vances in the study of chiral effects and applications of chiral polymer-based biointerface materials, and also present some challenges and perspectives.展开更多

However, some of them such as Ru(phen)_3Cl_2 and Ru(phen)_2(dppz)Cl_2 could hardly cross the cellular membrane of live cells which limited their further interaction with DNA in live cells. To solve this problem, a potential approach is to find a proper vehicle for loading and delivery of these ruthenium complexes into live cells.Mesoporous silica nanoparticles(MSNs) with non-toxicity and good biocompatibility can be good candidates. More importantly, ruthenium complexes with positively charge could be loaded on negatively charged MSNs via electrostatic attractions to form MSNs-Ru hybrid. In vitro test demonstrated that MSNs had no side effects on the interactions between Ru complexes and DNA.Furthermore, it is found that the MSNs-Ru hybrid can enter into living human cervical cancer cells HeLa and stain the DNA while the corresponding ruthenium complexes alone could hardly cross the cellular membrane in the control experiment, demonstrating MSNs can be employed to be an efficient ruthenium complexes delivery nanomaterial for live cell staining.展开更多

In this study we test mate preferences of female squirrel treefrogs Hyla squirella and female tungara frogs Physalaemus pustulosus for similar combinations of acoustic and visual components of their multimodal courtship signals. In a two-choice playback experiment with squirrel treefrogs, the visual stimulus of a male model significantly increased the attractivness of a relatively unattractive slow call rate. A previous study demonstrated that faster call rates are more attractive to female squirrel treefrogs, and all else being equal, models of male frogs with large body stripes are more attractive. In a similar experiment with female tungara frogs, the visual stimulus of a robotic frog failed to increase the attractiveness of a relatively unattractive call. Females also showed no preference for the distinct stripe on the robot that males commonly bear on their throat. Thus, features of conspicuous signal components such as body stripes are not universally important and signal function is likely to differ even among species with similar ecologies and communication systems. Finally, we discuss the putative information content of anuran signals and suggest that the categorization of redundant versus multiple messages may not be sufficient as a general explanation for the evolution of multimodal signaling. Instead of relying on untested assumptions concerning the information content of signals, we discuss the value of initially collecting comparative empirical data sets related to receiver responses.展开更多
