The goal of this study was to compare the effects of experience and knowledge about the Müller-Lyer illusion on participants' perceptual precision. Method Participants were undergraduate students (n = 108) who were not familiar with the Müller-Lyer illusion prior to the experiment. The task of participants was to adjust one movable line to make it equal to the other in Müller-Lyer figure. They received ascending and descending Müller-Lyer trials in three blocks with 20 trials each. The Experimental Group received information about the Müller-Lyer illusion prior to the third block. Results For the Experimental Group, the amount of departure in Block 3 was reduced significantly compared with previous blocks. Conclusion Knowledge about the mechanisms underlying visual illusions may play an important role in helping individuals overcome them.展开更多

In order to advance this idea, the author has acquired skills in investigation and expresses her thinking through a descriptive and explanatory visual language. The author's learning journey, while not unique, has not been an ordinary one. Initial academic failure to achieve in the school education system contributed to her choosing a life working on the land and harbouring the belief that she was unable to learn academically. Still, the author has gained a rich base of physical knowledge and experience through the traditional oral route including learning interpersonal communication through body language and vocal tonality. The author has used this intuitive knowledge to develop an arts practice where she explores the bio-cultural links between people and the lands they inhabit, creating works that aim to extend knowing through emphasising the experience and atmosphere of landscape. At this time, when our lives have become increasingly encoded and intellectually based, the author shares a belief with American philosopher Eugene Gendlin (b. 1926) that the "felt sense" can be developed in order to enable us to engage more fully with the world around us. The author explores this idea in her visual art but also realizes the need to express it in writing, both in order to reach a wider public and because of the possibilities offered by the written word to make public which is private and held deep within.展开更多

The oscillation types of the eyeballs were determined under the naked eyes cooperating with the electronystagmorgraphy ( ENG) examination. VA was measured at 5m and 30cm with distance and near International Standard Charts. The patient was permitted to see the target with his compensatary head posture. Results: Of the 57 patients tested, only 8 cases have normal stereopsis including normal SA,crossed and uncrossed disparity, which are all the jerk nystagmus. Forty-one have abnormal SA including 19 stereoblind, 18 abnormal stereopsis and 4 abnormal SA only. Serious damages of stereopsis exist in most of the pendular and more than half of the jerk nystagmus. The relations between stereopsis and VA are that (1)the better the展开更多
