The researchers examine college students' habits and beliefs concerning saving for retirement. To our knowledge, no study has examined retirement savings among Americans in this age group. We try to determine whether a student's retirement savings beliefs and habits can be predicted. Using a unique survey, five indexes are constructed to assess students' risk-aversion level, financial background, general savings habits, financial literacy, and attitudes toward saving. This index is used to predict a similarly constructed index of retirement savings behavior. We find that our overall model is predictive of a student's beliefs and habits in regards to saving for retirement. In addition, the student's level of risk-aversion, savings beliefs and financial literacy were each independently predictive of retirement savings behavior. Various demographic influences on the constructed risk and savings variables as well as interactions are also investigated.展开更多

According to the surveys, per capita net income level of the villages maintained consistent growth, as indicated by survey data on the years of 1930, 1936, 1957, 1986 and 1997, except for 1946 which saw decline, and enjoyed rapid growth particularly in the years of reform and opening-up after 1986. The changes reflect the national trendsustained decline of the proportion of net income from household operations versus eontinuous growth of the proportion wages income takes of the whole income.展开更多

In 2010, I published a paper estimating the actual income of high-income urban residents in China. Results indicated that per-capita disposable income for the wealthiest 10 percent of households in 2008 was roughly 139,000 yuan, rather than the 44,000 yuan indicated by official statistics. This suggested an aggregate gray income of 9.3 trillion yuan for China "s urban residents in 2008, mainly dispersed among high income groups. In 2012, Luo Chuliang et al. published a criticism paper, arguing that flawed methodology and analysis exaggerated gray income and household income gaps. This paper both responds to these criticisms and reasserts my original claim that official statistics seriously underestimate both gray income and income inequality in China.展开更多

基金For the purposes of this study, the eleven villages of Baoding refer to: Liluohou, Hejiaqiao, Dongguzhuang, Nandeng, Caijiaying, Xuezhuang, Gushang, Xiezhuang, Mengzhuang, Dazhuze, Dayang. However, the data in the 1986 survey only covers six villages. This study was sponsored by National Social Science Foundation (10 CJL008) and the innovation project of CASS's Institute of Economics, "Rural household economic transition of Wuxi and Baoding during the process of a hundred years of industrialization and urbanization." The authors appreciate support from various scholars.
