Fractal geometry was introduced in the present work to accurately simulate transect contour curves of pervious concrete specimens through fractal interpolation. It is proved that its fractal dimension (D) can be adopted to measure the skid resistance on pervious concrete pavement, overcoming the shortcomings of both macrotexture depth (DT ) and British portable pendulum number (NBP). Combined with Fujikawa-Koike tire/road contact model, the optimization method of all surface textures was recommended for designing and constructing excellently skid-resistant and noise-absorptive pervious concrete pavement. In addition, evaluating of the abrasion process and attenuation of the surface textures on concrete pavement slabs was also the focus of this work based on accelerated abrasion test. Results show that the surface textures on pervious concrete pavement slabs is extremely durable, compared to those on conventional grooved or exposed aggregate concrete pavement slabs.展开更多

Then, by comparing with the original brick-wall method, we find that the result obtained by the thin film method is more reasonable avoiding some drawbacks, such as little mass approximation, neglecting logarithm term, and taking the term L^3 as a contribution of the vacuum surrounding the black hole, and the physical meaning of the entropy is more clearer.展开更多

The physical properties of aggregates were first determined and concrete was produced from them. Marginal aggregates were found to have higher fines, absorption, soundness loss, micro-Deval abrasion loss, LA (Los Angeles) abrasion loss and lower specific gravity and unit weight when compared with standard aggregates. Workability of concrete containing marginal aggregate was found to be similar to concrete containing normal aggregates when Shilstone mix design method was used to optimize the concrete mixes. The compressive strength, splitting tensile, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete containing marginal aggregates were determined and found to be generally lower than concrete containing standard aggregates. A typical concrete pavement in Florida was modeled in FEACONSIV (finite element analysis of concrete slab) software developed at the University of Florida. Laboratory determined mechanical and thermal properties of concrete were inputted in FEACONS IV and analyzed for maximum induced stresses. Critical stress to strength ratios, i.e., ratio between maximum computed stresses obtained from FEACONS IV to modulus of rupture (strength) of concrete, was used as evaluation criterion for different concrete pavement mixes. It was found that, in general, concrete containing marginal aggregates have higher stress to strength ratios as compared with concrete containing standard aggregates.展开更多

Since human safety is main issue of disaster management, people are more concerned about the structural assessment and strengthening of those constructions. One historical brick masonry house located in Kathmandu world heritage site is modeled by FEM (finite element method) and analyzed in E1 Centro earthquake ground motions. Bricks are modeled as solid elements and the interfaces between the brick units are modeled as zero thickness joint elements. Then, non-linear analyses of the house are applied satisfying the famous Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The result shows that the house is very weak and sustains large deformation in El Centro 1940 Earthquake. A strengthening solution modifying the connections of existing elements and adding wooden frame inside the house can reduce the deformations significantly.展开更多

The flow space is the union of all flat 2- dimensional tori of area 1 with a marked direction (or equivalently the union of all tori with a quadratic differential of norm 1). This is a 5-dimensional space, and the flow acts by following individual points under an extremal deformation of the quadratic differential. The authors define associated horocycle and translation flows; the latter preserve each torus and are the horizontal and vertical flows of the corresponding quadratic differential. The scenery flow projects to the geodesic flow on the modular surface, and admits, for each orientation preserving hyperbolic toral automorphism, an invariant 3-dimensional subset on which it is the suspension flow of that map. The authors first give a simple algebraic definition in terms of the group of affine maps of the plane, and prove that the flow is Anosov. They give an explicit formula for the first-return map of the flow on convenient cross-sections. Then, in the main part of the paper, the authors give several different models for the flow and its cross-sections, in terms of : stacking and rescaling periodic tilings of the plane; symbolic dynamics: the natural extension of the recoding of Sturmian sequences, or the S-adic system generated by two substitutions; zooming and subdividing quasi-periodic tilings of the real line, or aperiodic quasicrystals of minimal complexity; the natural extension of two-dimensional continued fractions; induction on exchanges of three intervals; rescaling on pairs of transverse measure foliations on the torus, or the Teichmuller flow on the twice-punctured torus.展开更多
