A combination of theory of inventive problem solving(TRIZ), morp...A hybrid conceptual design approach was introduced in this study to develop a conceptual design of oil palm polymer composite automotive crash box(ACB). A combination of theory of inventive problem solving(TRIZ), morphological charts and biomimetics was applied where the foremost requirements in terms of the material characteristics, function specifications, force identification, root cause analysis, geometry profile and design selection criteria were considered. The strategy was to use creations of nature to inspire five innovative conceptual designs of the ACB structure and the AHP method was applied to perform the pairwise analysis of selecting the best ACB conceptual design. A new conceptual design for a composite ACB was conceived bearing in mind the properties of natural fibre, unlike those of conventional materials such as steel alloys and aluminium alloys. The design with the highest ranking(26.6 %) was chosen as the final conceptual design, which was the one with a honeycomb structure for the outermost profile, reinforced with a spider web structure inside the part, supported by fibre foam structure extracted from the woodpecker sponge tissue at the centre to maximize the energy absorption capability. The new design could solve the problem of bending collapse which is a major cause of failure to absorb maximum impact energy for ACB during collision. However, the final conceptual design will still need several modifications for production and assembly purposes, which will be completed in a further study.展开更多
Collision and security issues are considered as barriers to RFID applications.In this paper,a parallelizable anti-collision based on chaotic sequence combined dynamic frame slotted aloha to build a high-efficiency RFI...Collision and security issues are considered as barriers to RFID applications.In this paper,a parallelizable anti-collision based on chaotic sequence combined dynamic frame slotted aloha to build a high-efficiency RFID system is proposed.In the tags parallelizable identification,we design a Discrete Markov process to analyze the success identification rate.Then a mutual authentication security protocol merging chaotic anti-collision is presented.The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed identification scheme has less than 45.1%of the identification time slots compared with the OVSF-system when the length of the chaos sequence is 31.The success identification rate of the proposed chaotic anti-collision can achieve 63%when the number of the tag is100.We test the energy consumption of the presented authentication protocol,which can simultaneously solve the anti-collision and security of the UHF RFID system.展开更多

Many applications in robotics, computer-aided design, and related areas can be reduced to computational problems in terms o...The configuration space is a fundamental concept that is widely used in algorithmic robotics. Many applications in robotics, computer-aided design, and related areas can be reduced to computational problems in terms of configuration spaces. In this paper, we survey some of our recent work on solving two important challenges related to configuration spaces: ~ how to efficiently compute an approximate representation of high-dimensional configuration spaces; and how to efficiently perform geometric proximity and motion planning queries (n high-dimensional configuration spaces. We present new configuration space construction algorithms based on machine learning and geometric approximation techniques. These algorithms perform collision queries on many configuration samples. The collision query results are used to compute an approximate representation for the configuration space, which quickly converges to the exact configuration space. We also present parallel GPU-based algorithms to accelerate the performance of optimization and search computations in configuration spaces. In particular, we design efficient GPU-based parallel k-nearest neighbor and parallel collision detection algorithms and use these algorithms to accelerate motion planning.展开更多

In order to ensure the highest safety requirements, nuclear power plant structures (the containment structures, the fuel storages and transportation systems) should be assessed against all possible internal and extern...In order to ensure the highest safety requirements, nuclear power plant structures (the containment structures, the fuel storages and transportation systems) should be assessed against all possible internal and external impact threats. The internal impact threats include kinetic missiles generated by the failure of high pressure vessels and pipes, the failure of high speed rotating machineries and accidental drops. The external impact threats may come from airborne missiles, aircraft impact, explosion blast and fragments. The impact effects of these threats on concrete and steel structures in a nuclear power plant are discussed. Methods and procedures for the impact assessment of nuclear power plants are introduced. Recent studies on penetration and perforation mechanics as well as progresses on dynamic properties of concrete-like materials are presented to increase the understanding of the impact effects on concrete containment structures.展开更多
