Concentrations of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) and various magnetic parameters in contaminated urban roadside soils were investigated using chemical analysis and magnetic measurements. The results revealed highly elevated Cu and Zn concentrations as well as magnetic susceptibility in the roadside soils. The mean concentrations of Cu and Zn in these roadside soils were almost twice those in average Chinese soils, with the mean magnetic susceptibility of the roadside soils reaching about 179 ×10^-8 m^3 kg^-1. This enhanced magnetic susceptibility was attributed to the presence of anthropogenic soft ferrimagnetic particles. A low frequency-dependent susceptibility (2.5%± 1.0%) observed in the roadside soils indicated the coarse multidomain (MD) ferrimagnetic grains to be the dominant contributor to magnetic susceptibility. The Cu and Zn concentration of the soils had highly significant linear correlations with magnetic susceptibility (P 〈 0.01), anhysteretic remanent magnetization (P 〈 0.01), and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (P 〈 0.01). This suggested that heavy metals were associated with ferrimagnetic particles in soils, which were attributed to input of traffic emissions and industrial activities. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectra of magnetic extracts of the roadside soils further suggested the llnk between the magnetic signal and concentrations of heavy metals. Thus, the magnetic parameters could provide a proxy measure for the level of heavy metal contamination and could be a potential tool for the detection and mapping of contaminated soils. 展开更多

Titanium mineral was prepared from vanadium titanomagnetite concentrates by hydrogen reduction and acid leaching. The leaching behaviors of elements like Fe,V,Mn,Al,Mg,Ca,and Si were highly related to the reduction degree. The phase compositions of the reduced materials and the leached residues were analyzed by XRD to identify the effect of reduction degree on the leaching mechanisms. The results showed that the concentrates were reduced to iron metal and titanomagnetite at 800-1000°C for 0.5 h,and the above elements of Fe and impurities were easily leached.Deeper reduction led to the formation of ilmenite and Mg-Al spinel, which hindered leaching.Mg-bearing anosovite appeared in the further reduced materials, and the leaching rates of impurities became much lower. An upgraded titanium mineral with a normalized TiO_(2) grade of 70.3%was achieved by H_(2) reduction at 850°C for 0.5 h and acid leaching, which is a satisfactory Ti resource for the preparation of titanium oxide by sulfate process. 展开更多

Bacterial leaching of single sulfide minerals and polymetallic sulfide ores was operated in shake flasks and small-scaled columns. The results show that bioleaching of jamesonite is not accessible, the iron extraction rate of pyrrhotite bioleaching reaches 98.2% after 26 d,and the zinc extraction rate of marmatite bioleaching reaches 92.3%,while the corresponding iron extraction reaches only 13.6% after 29 d.Pulp density has a significant effect on metal extraction of pyrrhotite and marmatite bioleaching. The corresponding metal extraction rate decreases with the increase of pulp density. For the polymetallic sulfide ores, zinc extraction of 97.1% is achieved after bioleaching in shake flasks for 10 d,while only 7.8% is obtained after bioleaching in small-scaled column.Analytical results of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDX) reveal that large amount of calcium sulfate is formed on the mineral surface. 展开更多

Elective culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans in 9K medium modified with pyrrhotite was studied.Bioleaching of flotation concentrate of sphalerite by the selected bacteria was carried out.The results show that the microorganisms cultured by pyrrhotite are a mixture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans,of which the capability to oxidize ferrous to ferric irons is enhanced by the high mass ratio of Fe to S in pyrrhotite.Three pyrrhotite samples were separated into various parts with corresponding S/Fe ratios by magnetic separation and were used to culture the elective bacteria as the substrate. The association of the cultures could provide a more rapid and complete oxidation of sphalerite than that of bacteria cultivated by conventional methods. 展开更多

There are two types of mineralization in the Xinqiao: skarn-type and stratiform-type. The skarn-type mineralization is characterized by iron oxides such as magnetite and hematite, whereas stratiform-type mineralization is characterized by massive sulfides with small amounts of magnetite and hematite. We defined three types of ores within the strati- form-type mineralization by the mineral assemblages and ore structures. Type Ⅰ ore is represented by magnetite crosscut by minor calcite veins. Type Ⅱ is a network ore composed of magnetite and crosscutting pyrite. Type Ⅲ is a massive ore containing calcite and hematite. Type Ⅰ magnetite is characterized by highly variable trace element content, whereas Type Ⅱ magnetite has consistently higher Si, Ti, V, and Nb. Type Ⅲ magnetite contains more In, Sn, and As than the other two types. Fluid-rock interaction, oxygen fugacity (fO2), and temperature (T) are the main factors controlling element variation between the different magnetite types. Type I magnetite was formed by more extensive fluid-rock interaction than the other two types at moderate fO2 and T conditions. Type Ⅱ magnetite is thought to have formed in relatively low fO2 and high-Tenvironments, and Type Ⅲ in relatively high fOe and moderate-T environments. Ca + Al + Mn and Ti + V discrimination diagrams show that magnetite in the Xin qiao deposit is hydrothermal in origin and is possibly linked with skarn. 展开更多

The bioleaching of pyrrhotite was investigated using Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans. The effects of pH,pulp concentration, inoculation amount, external addition of ferrous and ferric ions were examined. The pH is found to exert a profound effect on the leaching process for controlling the bacterial activity and precipitation of ferric ions mainly as jarosite. The results show that low pulp content increases the leaching rate of iron. The inoculation amount from 1×107 cell/mL to 1×108 cell/mL has positive effects on the leaching rate. The results also imply that addition of ferrous sulfate(1 g/L) is required for the bacteria to efficiently drive the extraction of iron, however, the leaching efficiency has no obvious enhancement when 2 g/L ferrous sulfate was added.Comparatively, addition of ferric sulfate(2 g/L) significantly inhibits the bioleaching process. At the end of bioleaching, jarosite and sulfur are observed on the surface of pyrrhotite residues by using XRD and SEM.With the passivation film formed by jarosite and sulfur, the continuous iron extraction is effectively blocked. 展开更多

The effects of basicity and temperature on the reduction process of Hongge high-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite(HCVTM)sinter were investigated in this work. The main characterization methods of X-ray fluorescence(XRF),X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),and metallographic microscope were employed in this study. In this work, the reduction of HCVTM sinter with different temperature and basicity were experimented. The Fe,FeO,and TiO in reductive samples increase with increasing basicity and temperatures. The increase of basicity and temperature is favorable to the reduction of HCVTM sinter. The Fe phase has out-migration tendency to the surface of sinter while the perovskite and silicate phases have in-migration tendency to the inside of sinter. The reduction degradation index(RDI)decreases while the reduction index(RI)increases with increasing basicity. The RI increases from 67.14%to 82.09%with increasing temperature from 1073 K to 1373 K. 展开更多

Vanadium extraction of vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite was investigated by selective chlorination. Thermodynamics analyses on the interactive reactions among related species in the system were made before the experiments. Some fundamental experiments for extracting vanadium by FeClx as chlorinating agent were conducted over the temperature range of 900-1300 K under air or oxygen atmosphere. The results show that vanadium can be extracted by the selective chlorination, using FeClx, based on thermodynamic analysis and experiment. Vanadium extraction ratio first increases with the increase of temperature, and then decreases with the increase of temperature over the range of 900-1300 K under air or oxygen atmosphere. The higher molar ratio of FeCI3 to oxides (nchl:noxd) reacting with FeC13, the higher ratio of vanadium extraction. Under oxygen atmosphere, the vanadium extraction ratio is up to 32% at 1100 K for 2 h by using FeCI3 as chlorinating agent. 展开更多

A novel iron sulphide adsorbent using magnetite embedded with nanosized Fe3O4 was prepared and applied to separation lanthanum (Ⅲ) from aqueous solution. This adsorbent combines the advantages of magnetic nanoparticle with magnetic separability and high affinity toward rare earth metals, which provides distinctive merits including easy preparation, high adsorption capacity, easy isolation from sample solutions by the application of an external magnetic field. The adsorption behaviors of lanthanum (Ⅲ) from an aqueous medium, using iron sulphide magnetite nanoparticles were studied using equilibrium batch and column flow techniques. The effect ofpH, contents of loaded iron sulphide nanoparticles, ionic strength, adsorbent dose, contact time, and temperature on adsorption capacity of the magnetic beads was investigated. All of the results suggested that the FeS/Fe3O4 Nanoparticles could be excellent adsorbents for La(Ⅲ) contaminated water treatment. 展开更多

In this contribution the influence of chemically synthesized magnetite particles coated by sodium oleate and PEG (MPEG), and magnetosomes (MS) was gradually tested on the process of phagocytosis and the metabolic activity (lysozyme and peroxidase activity) in leukocyte. Lysozyme activity is oxygen-independent liquidation mechanisms of engulfed microorganism, peroxidase activity is oxygen-dependent one. The both tested samples MS and MPEG lysed leukocyte cells during incubation. MPEG with concentration 10 and 20 μg/mL lysed almost all leukocytes and their cell viability was in the 14 ± 0.05% range. On the other hand, MS begin to influence leukocytes activity at the concentration of 1 μg/mL and this influence grows with increasing concentration up to 20 μg/mL. MS are more suitable for biological applications than MPEG which are more aggressive material than MS and their using is unavailable for these types of the test mainly for the concentration 10 - 20 μg/mL. 展开更多

Cases of degradation of concrete associated to iron sulphides in aggregates were recently recognized in the Trois-Rivi6res area, Canada. The aggregate used to produce concrete was an anorthositic gabbro containing various proportions of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite. Quantitative microanalysis on sulphide minerals show that pyrrhotite contains small amount of Ni, Co, Cu and As substituting for Fe in the mineral structure. Considering element substitution, x value in the chemical formula (Fe~.xS) was calculated to 0.099 in the pyrrhotite studied. Petrographic examination of damaged concretes showed the presence of oxidized pyrrhotite. The observation of polished samples shows, in several cases, that the pyrite is intact while the pyrrhotite presents evident signs of oxidation. In the presence of water and oxygen, pyrrhotite oxidizes to form iron oxyhydroxides and sulphuric acid. The acid then reacts with the phases of the cement paste and provokes the formation of gypsum and ettringite. These minerals were observed by SEM-EDS (scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer) and their precipitation causes a volume increase that creates expansion and cracking of the concrete. 展开更多

We observed an exchange bias effect in La0.5Ca0.5FeO3 perovskite compound. The exchange bias is associated with the charge disproportionation transition from Fe4+ions to Fe3+and Fe5+ions below 175 K.The competition between the ferromagnetic interaction of Fe3+and Fe5+ions and the antiferromagnetic one of Fe3+and Fe3+ions results in a unidirectional anisotropy in the cluster-glass system. An antiferromagnetically interfacial exchange coupling constant Ji1.95 meV at the cluster-glass region was yielded by fitting the cooling field-dependence of the exchange bias field. 展开更多
