The average crystallite size of the barium phosphates was calculated by particle size distribution curves, and the size of the products was 33.40, 29. 37, 24. 13, 47.76 and 96. 53 μm when the pH values of the mixed solution are 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, respectively. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) show that the structures of the particles controlled by the mixed solution are mainly BaaPO4 when pH 〈 10; the barium phosphates are synthesized by biological deposition which is the mixture of BaHPO4 and Ba5 (PO4)3OH when pH = 10; when pH = 11, the barium phosphates are also the mixtures, which are Ba5 (PO4)3OH and BaNaPO4. The above results indicate that the phosphate-mineralization microbe can produce a certain enzyme which constantly hydrolyzes phosphate monoester in the mixed solution, and then PO4^3- ions are obtained.展开更多

Mitochondria have recently been shown to play an important role in regulating both programmed cell death and cell proliferation. Furthermore, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations have been found in various cancer cells. However, the role of these mtDNA mutations in tumorigenesis remains largely unknown. This review focuses on basic mitochondrial genetics, mtDNA mutations and consequential mitochondrial dysfunction associated with cancer. The potential molecular mechanisms, mediating the pathogenesis from mtDNA mutations and mitochondrial dysfunction to tumorigenesis are also discussed.展开更多

In Florida, using wild-caught non-native black spiny-tailed iguanas Ctenosaura similis, we screened acetaminophen and zinc phosphide to determine their suitability for effective population management of this prolific invasive species. Of the animals that received acetaminophen, none died except at the highest test dose, 240 mg per lizard, which is not practical for field use. Zinc phosphide produced 100% mortality at dose levels as little as 25 mg per lizard, equivalent to about 0.5% in bait which is lower than currently used in commercial baits for commensal rodent con-trol. We conclude that zinc phosphide has potential as a useful tool for reducing populations of invasive lizards such as the black spiny-tailed iguana provided target-selective delivery methods are developed [Current Zoology 57 (5): 625~529, 2011].展开更多

Here, we correlate experiments with modeling and verify experimentally the predicted absorption of light in InP nanowire arrays for varying nanowire diameter and length. We find that 2,000 nm long nanowires in a pitch of 400 nm can absorb 94% of the incident light with energy above the band gap and, as a consequence, light which in a simple ray-optics description would be travelling between the nanowires can be efficiently absorbed by the nanowires. Our measurements demonstrate that the absorption for long nanowires is limited by insertion reflection losses when light is coupled from the air top-region into the array. These reflection losses can be reduced by introducing a smaller diameter to the nanowire-part closest to the air top-region. For nanowire arrays with such a nanowire morphology modulation, we find that the absorptance increases monotonously with increasing diameter of the rest of the nanowire.展开更多

PGC-1α plays an important role in cellular metabolism and is associated with tumorigenesis, suggesting an involvement in cell cycle progression. However, the underlying mechanisms mediating its involvement in these processes remain unclear. To elucidate the signaling pathways involved in PGC-1α function, we established a cell line, CH1 PGC-1α, which stably overexpresses PGC-1α. Using this cell line, we found that over-expression of PGC-1α stimulated extra adenosine triphosphate(ATP) and reduced reactive oxygen species(ROS) production. These effects were accompanied by up-regulation of the cell cycle checkpoint regulators Cyclin D1 and Cyclin B1. We hypothesized that ATP and ROS function as cellular signals to regulate cyclins and control cell cycle progression. Indeed, we found that reduction of ATP levels down-regulated Cyclin D1 but not Cyclin B1, whereas elevation of ROS levels down-regulated Cyclin B1 but not Cyclin D1. Furthermore, both low ATP levels and elevated ROS levels inhibited cell growth, but PGC-1α was maintained at a constant level. Together, these results demonstrate that PGC-1α regulates cell cycle progression through modulation of Cyclin D1 and Cyclin B1 by ATP and ROS. These findings suggest that PGC-1α potentially coordinates energy metabolism together with the cell cycle.展开更多
