The Cold War, the Space Race, the construction of a new middle class in most western societies led by the postwar economic prosperity with unprecedented urban growth followed by severe environmental problems fostered the design of spectacular urban utopian cities and mega-architectures. In those years, Japan was the source of highly influential bold and visionary urban and architectural ideas which relied on advanced technology. These ideas were conceived on the thought that cities could be seen as gigantic but impermanent entities able to transform itself according to an organic process of adaptation of its elementary components. Practical implications especially concern different consequences that recent global economic crisis has imposed on regulatory, business, and social aspects of corporate governance. In order to encompass different approaches to this ongoing issue, the author takes into account mainly theoretical contributions that address the issue from the following perspectives: interrelations between product market competition and corporate governance, assessment of capital market pressures on corporate governance; relation between labour market and corporate governance; and actors influencing corporate governance changes in national systems of corporate governance. Since the viability of any corporate governance system and practice, at national and international levels, depends on their ability to respond to both market pressure towards competitiveness and diversified requirements by influential social, political, and economic actors of change, the author suggests that all groups of factors should continue to be in the focus of future researches. On the other hand, as global economic crisis differently affects different countries and businesses, it is of particular importance for those that shape corporate governance policies and practices to be aware of the deep relatedness between corporate governance, on the one hand, and economic, social, and environmental aspects of growth and development, on the other hand.展开更多

In the last years, in order to ensure the sustainability of its economic and social development, China gave more importance to the innovativeness of business enterprises. In the domestic arena, the sustainability of the growth model that China has followed over the past decades has been criticized because of its excessive reliance on capital and resources as opposed to knowledge and innovation. In 2006, that transformation has been at the centre of the government's "scientific development strategy". Today, in fact, innovation and promotion of entrepreneurship are essential conditions for competitiveness of firms and nations, for the long-term growth and, therefore, for the economy as a whole. This paper investigates the level of potential innovation reached in China in 2008 through a disaggregated analysis, evaluating the production capacity of the Chinese provinces. "Innovation" has been widely studied by economic literature, specially with reference to the output. In this paper, we will refer to the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) index, to measure the progress of innovation, which represents the skill to innovate of a territory, but not the achieved innovation. First, we will propose some methodological changes of this method, that allows to obtained a ranking, in order to better understand the results reached by the Chinese provinces; Then we will test a different methodology in order to measure the level of potential innovation overcoming the limits of current practice--from a composite index obtained through a mean of disaggregated indices to multivariate analysis.展开更多

Society does not care much about the damages of right owners. Internet is often considered as a "public place", and works on Internet are considered as "displayed in public places" from which a lawful restriction of rights is permitted. It promotes unfair competition and hinders the development of sustainable business. Lawful use of protected copyright content is a tool for ensuring equal and sustainable competition level among entrepreneurs. On Internet, there are many copyright-protected works available. Many members of society wish to get an access to these works, which means that a solution should be found. For private and non-commercial use, there should be reasonable limitations. Combating piracy on Intemet using enforcement tools alone does not yield results. Piracy should be placed in a frame accepted by a civilized society, and the society and authors should get the maximum benefits from it.展开更多

Qualified staff (including teachers and administration) is the necessary condition for high-quality education of students. The qualified staff (university teachers) can only be internationally competitive when they do high quality research andactively participate in the university management. Government and industry set up the "boundary conditions" for universities, but they should not interfere into the internal self-governance of the universities, and should respect academic freedom. A world-class university has its own Triple Helix uniting education, research and innovation. A few specific examples of practical realization of such "sub" Triple Helix are given, which are based on personal experience of the author during 24 years of his work as a professor at leading universities in the USA, Germany and Japan. Though some findings and conclusions may have limited use in any particular country, there are universal features that should be present in any modem university interested in increasing its impact on local environment, concerned with interaction to local government and local businesses, and striving for top positions in international rankings.展开更多

This study was empirical, quantitative, descriptive, exploratory, explicative and transversal in nature. The studied population consisted of executives who attended the training sessions of the Institute of Public Accountants of Nuevo Le6n (IPANL). For this study, a sample of 134 executives was selected by convenience sampling. For the data collection, an instrument of 94 indicators was elaborated and the indicators within the study were the following: 31 indicators for strategic planning, 15 indicators for innovation, 24 indicators for competitive advantage, and 24 indicators for corporate performance. The null hypotheses were analyzed using multivariate analysis denominated as a structural equation model, utilizing maximum plausibility methods. According to the selected structural equation indexes, the obtained results show that the proposed model had an acceptable goodness of fit index.展开更多

There are gaps in literatures: (1) Most of the researches try to study CSR for small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) business related to general society. Thus, no paper has studied CSR for a specific community, where the small grocery stores are located; and (2) Papers studying the relationship of marketing as the successful strategy for small grocery stores in competing among grocery retailing industry are scarce. Therefore, the author proposes a new variable---community responsibility and the model of the effects of community responsibility on the long-term performance, in order to reduce the serious problem. By testing the model with the survey data, the author finds that the effects of community responsibility of grocery stores (product) on the long-term relationship are strongly and positively significant. While the effects of community responsibility of grocery stores (environment) on the long-term relationship are not significant.展开更多

Translation and culture has a secret, regardless of the contact. Cultural commonalities translation becomes possible, but the personality of their language and culture gave an obstacle translation activities. Due to differences in national history, social system, habits, there is a great difference between the Chinese Han culture and the American culture, this difference is caused by the different ways of thinking, embodied in both Chinese and English language performance including words understanding and the use of different meaning connotation of associative meaning, and sentence structure. For this reason, the analysis of the theoretical principles of sentences by reference to further explore and propose solutions on certain aspects is essential. And in today's globalized increasingly competitive situation, how to be more accurate English translation closer to the two languages, culture, and then discuss the worth of the majority of English learners.展开更多

Here, we investigated the effects and possible mechanisms of SP extract on an established model of depression: chronic stressed tree shrew, which mimics the human condition of social stress. The animals were divided into 4 groups. Except for the na?ve group, the other animals were subjected to daily social defeat stress for 5 weeks, and during the last 4 weeks treated with SP extract(3.6 g/kg/d), fluoxetine(15 mg/kg/d), and vehicle, respectively. The results showed that SP extract could reverse body weight loss to a certain extent and reduce the levels of urine/serum cortisol that were initially increased by chronic social defeat. In addition, SP extract increased hippocampus norepinephrine concentrations. Our data suggested that SP extract had positive effects on the main depression symptoms in the chronic stressed tree shrew model and that it may be used to help control hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity.展开更多

With a theoretical model of plural political competition and empirical evidences gathered from panel data, I argue that the liberalizing effect of political liberty on foreign direct investment hinges on the local factor endowment of the country experiencing democratization. I develop a theory of investment policy formation that takes into account the strategic response from domestic societal actors to redistribution of political power and its impact on FDI liberalization. Consistent with the theoretical prediction, the empirical results show political liberalization is more likely to lead to liberalization of foreign direct investment when the capital-labor ratio in the economy is relatively low.展开更多

Male Atlantic molly Poecilia mexicana exhibit weaker mating preferences when an audience male is presented. This could be a male strategy to reduce sperm competition risk: interacting more equally with different females may be advantageous because ri- vals might copy mate choice decisions. In line with this hypothesis, a previous study found males to show a strong audience effect when being observed while exercising mate choice, but not when the rival was presented only before the choice tests. Audience effects on mate choice decisions have been quantified in poeciliid fishes using association preference designs, but it remains un- known if patterns found from measuring association times translate into actual mating behavior. Thus, we created five audience treatments simulating different forms of perceived sperm competition risk and determined focal males' mating preferences by scoring pre-mating (nipping) and mating behavior (gonopodial thrusting). Nipping did not reflect the pattern that was found when association preferences were measured, while a very similar pattern was uncovered in thrusting behavior. The strongest response was observed when the audience could eavesdrop on the focal male's behavior. A reduction in the strength of focal males' preferences was also seen after the rival male had an opportunity to mate with the focal male's preferred mate. In comparison, the reduction of mating preferences in response to an audience was greater when measuring association times than actual mating behavior. While measuring direct sexual interactions between the focal male and both slimulus females not only the male's motivational state is reflected but also females' behavior such as avoidance of male sexual harassment [Current Zoology 58 (1): 84-94, 2012].展开更多
