The results demonstrate that, in the traditional patrilineal Chinese family, both genetic relatedness and the cultural factor of generation were important in determining kinship status for male agnates (genetically related relatives). For female agnates, however, only genetic relatedness was important. Another surprising finding was that the influence of gender was not as important as genetic relatedness. The most interesting finding in this study, however, was that kin selection and culture (i.e., seniority in generation and age) played vastly different roles in different lineages in the Chinese family: for collateral (indirect) agnates, genetic relatedness was the most important factor in determining their kinship status, but for lineal (direct) agnates, its importance was overridden by seniority in generation and age, a cultural factor. Several other bio-cultural factors also explained a considerable amount of variance in kinship status. Since kinship profoundly affected, and was often the foundation of, the legal and social systems in dynastic China, kin selection, while its strength may differ remarkably between lineal and collateral relatives, could act as a selective force in Chinese families展开更多

Decline in hippocampal memory function is especially prominent with age and often reduces quality of life. As the aging population expands, the need for interventional strategies to prevent cognitive decline has become more pressing. Fortunately, several major lifestyle factors have proven effective at combating hippocampal aging, the most well-known of which are environmental enrichment and exercise. While the evidence supporting the beneficial nature of these factors is substantial, a less well-understood factor may also contribute to healthy cognitive aging: social engagement. We review the evidence supporting the role of social engagement in preserving hippocampal function in old age. In elderly humans, high levels of social engagement correlate with better hippocampal function, yet there is a dearth of work to indicate a causative role. Existing rodent literature is also limited but has begun to provide causative evidence and establish candidate mechanisms. Summed together, while many unanswered questions remain, it is clear that social engagement is a viable lifestyle factor for preserving cognitive function in old age. Social integration across the lifespan warrants more investigation and more appreciation when designing living circumstances for the elderly.展开更多

It is a comparative analysis of textbooks from eight Mediterranean countries which differ by their cultures, their socio-economical levels, and their religions. This work is focused on the sensitive educational topic "Human Reproduction and Sex Education". And 43 biology textbooks are analyzed among eight countries: four are in Europe and four in Africa and Middle East. Grids were built to identify implicit values in the texts and images. It is a more precisely explicit or implicit presence of cultural, socio-economical, and ethical dimensions. The investigation concerns whether the authors of textbooks present differently this theme depending on the socio-cultural, ethical, and religious contexts. The content of the textbooks was analyzed as reflecting the conceptions of their authors and publishers. The outcomes of the analyses show that several textbooks present images of human beings restricted to only one ethnic type, usually white-skinned and with fair hair. The social, cultural, economical, and ethical dimensions were generally absent, except for some interest for them in few European textbooks.展开更多

In today's world, commercialism and technology have gained and accumulated enormous power in its impact on human society and consciousness, and have posed serious challenges to the traditional pursuit of enlightenment and philosophical studies. This paper takes a retrospective look of Lao Zi's Dao De Jing (Tao Te Jing, 道德经).1 The discussion provides Lao Zi's definition of enlightenment in comparison to the western philosophical tradition and examines his focal concepts of Dao (the Way,道) and Virtue (德), their relationship as well as the connection with enlightenment and education. In addition, the paper analyzes the insights and meaning Lao Zi's thought has for the contemporary philosophers and practices and raises questions regarding the implementation of his philosophy in the classrooms today.展开更多

With about thirty years of momentum, this discipline has grown from little more than a special interests group to a topic to which multiple institutions and journals have been dedicated. This paper presents an outline of the discipline of Cultural Psychology from an American interdisciplinary perspective. The pitfalls of General Psychology (research methodology, politicization, and an essentialist hermeneutic) and Anthropology (an epistemological gap in the four fields approach, psychophobia, and the role of the researcher in cultural change) are addressed, in turn. Cultural Psychology provides an alternative to these pitfalls by drawing on the strengths of each discipline to address both theoretical and empirical problems. Cultural Psychology urges for a critical reflection on the social structure and history of its own discipline, resulting in a broader academic canon and a more nuanced understanding of interdisciplinary relations within the human sciences.展开更多

He has become a global publishing phenomenon: His books have been translated worldwide, film adaptations of his novels have been produced, and the author is the subject of a million-euro publishing deals and successive media scandals in France. The novels depict surprising forms of imaginary resources, a radiating end of the world, a post-nuclear anxiety, and depressive characters. Houellebecq shocks us leaving us in a world where the feelings of love, tenderness and goodwill have disappeared. The purpose of Houellebecq's novels is to alert about the real problems of the human society in the twenty-first century. Indeed, in the books we can easily recognize the essential features of contemporary society and the fact that the individual assumes a dehumanization process in which one has to cope with his solitude in a world of emptiness. This socio-cultural dimension is indeed the background of Houellebecq's novels, novels in which the protagonists seem to be wedged in a mechanism from which it is difficult to escape: reification and dehumanization on the one hand, "robotization" of love on the other. This article focuses on the analysis of the texts revealing the poignant characteristics of"L'Ere du vide" ("The Era of Emptiness") as described by Gilles Lipovetsky: Loneliness, the lack of love and its replacement by sexual relations.展开更多

Actually, several fish ponds were abandoned and many others were still unproductive. This study aims to present current state and perspectives of the fish farming for its real contribution to the socio-economic development. The results presented are compilation of physical and chemical parameters series measured in fish ponds and inquiries led in 2010-2014 to the fish farmers in seven provinces (40% of the total area of the country). Weak values of some physical and chemical parameters showed that the majority of ponds are badly maintained. Thus, the dissolved oxygen values varied between 0.2 mg/L and 3.5 mg/L. The high relinquishment rate of the fish fanning (between 40% and 67% according to the provinces) could be explained by many constraints: no centers of fish farming breeding for various fish species and no production center of complete foods with local sub-products. About 75% of fish famers confirmed that they have never benefited framing in fish fanning. In spite of the diverse constraints, Burundi has a dense rivers system with favorable physical and chemical parameters and many appropriate sites for the fish farming. Thus, the main suggestions concern the sector reorganization.展开更多

This paper aims to disclose how nowadays the family helps the child to develop adaptation instruments which would help to adapt to the society in a micromacro environment, to show what helps the child to become a member of a social group, of the society, what adaptation problems arise during the childhood. Problems of school adaptation of the first-formers have not been properly assessed and analysed so far, though they foresee the future. No proper attention has been paid to the development of the harmonious personality during the pre-school period and to the correction of their adaptation during the firstschool year. The paper deals with the child's experiences of the pre-school period as the factor influencing school adaptation in the first form. Variety and quality of children's experiences are directly related and most of all depend on the family of the spiritual institution, so its impact is the strongest in terms of the development of the child's personality. The goal is to disclose the importance of selfdevelopment in childhood, which determines future success. The object is selfdevelopment during childhood today in the Lithuania. Methods of investigation are: the analysis of pedagogical, psychological, philosophical literature; the analysis of empiri.cal researches and statistic data; and the method of observation. The hypothesis is: The cause of the firstformers' school adaptation difficulties incompletely realised adaptation potential during the preschool period.展开更多

How- ever, evolution is not progressive and therefore many species may occupy niches that favor socially transmitted, group specific behavior. Not surprisingly, evidence for culture has accrued in several taxonomic groups, including cetaceans. If culture is an ada- ptation, it is imperative we understand the factors that favor its formation. Understanding the evolutionary origin of culture will allow for a wider range of species to be studied, including those that are difficult to test in the laboratory. I propose a broad-based functional paradigm for evaluating nonhuman culture; based on the idea that while not all cultural behaviors may garner fitness benefits to the individual, the ecological and social environments in which cultural behaviors evolved must have favored the physical attributes and social learning capabilities that allow for cultural formation. Specifically this framework emphasizes the relationships between social learning, ecology, social systems, and biology in relation to culture. I illustrate the utility of the func- tional paradigm with evidence from the ceteacean group, while setting the stage for a stringent species by species analysis. By means of contextualizing culture, the Functional Paradigm can evaluate a species' potential to exhibit culture and can investigate potentially cultural behaviors展开更多
