Patterns of ground movement and pore water pressure variation are obtained through a case study using a finite element method. With the progress of excavation, ground subsidence, ground inclination and horizontal displacement accelerates. Along the striking direction, a subsidence basin is formed on the ground surface induced by underground mining. The maximum subsidence is around 5.41m. The ratio of ground subsidence to the thickness of the coal seam is 1.08. The maximum inclination is 11.5 mm/m. The maximum horizontal displacement is 2.15 mm/m. At the time the coal has been excavated, the maximum pore water pressure reaches 25 kPa. In order to improve protection of structures lo- cated over the area with underground mining, the variation of additional stresses of a railway bridge induced by ground surface deformation is analyzed. The main effect of underground mining on the railway bridge is the tensile stress and the maximum value reaches as high as 4.29 MPa, which is greater than the concrete tensile strength. 展开更多

Field lysimeter method was employed to investigate the downward movement and leaching of N applied to summer corn (Zea may L.) on dryland soil in Beiling. A N-fertilizer (120 kg N hm-2) and a control treatment were arranged for the study. Soil solution was collected at depths of 20, 40, 60, 120 and 170 cm,while leachate was collected at the bottom (200 cm) of the lysimeter. The results showed that the downward movement of NO3-N in soil profile was greatly affected by rainfall pattern. The peak of leached NO3-N from both treatments coincided with the peak of the rainfall. In addition, leached NO3-N from both treatments and rainfall were significantly correlated (P<0.05). The amount of leached NO3-N was not great in the N-fertilizer treatment. The results also suggested that N fertilization could cause NO3-N contamination of groundwater during the rainy season. 展开更多

The disc is subjected to time-harmonic torsional moment loadings. The half space under consideration consists of a number of layers with different thickness and material properties. Hankel transform techniques and transferring matrix method are used to solve the governing equations. The continuity of the displacement and stress fields between different layers enabled derivation of closed-form solutions in the transform domain. On the assumption that the contact between the disc and the half space is perfectly bonded, this dynamic mixed boundary-value problem can be reduced to dual integral equations, which are further reduced to Fredholm integral equations of the second kind and solved by numerical procedures. Selected numerical results for the dynamic impedance and displacement amplitude of the disc resting on different saturated models are presented to show the influence of the material and geometrical properties of both the saturated soil-foundation system and the nature of the load acting on it. The conclusions obtained can serve as guidelines for practical engineering. 展开更多

The current economic crisis has left numerous residential developments in the southeastern United States in various stages of construction. Many of them are currently graded and essentially abandoned, creating a major source of sediment runoff to waterways. Residential development locations with significant bare soil areas were identified through classification of Landsat 5 TM satellite imagery and subsequently verified from high-resolution county aerial photographs. The revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) was used in a geographic information system (GIS) as a tool for prioritizing identified locations on the basis of potential soil loss assuming the worst case scenario of a completely unmaintained site. Initial GIS identification indicated 301 sites with a total bare soil area of 2 378 ha over three counties in Upstate South Carolina. A random sample of 153 sites was visited over 17 days and assessed using a mobile GIS, global positioning system (GPS), and digital camera for field validation. Results indicated that 78% (119) of the sites were classified correctly (residential construction sites in varying stages of completion); 88% of identified areas were less than 25% built compared to the previous year; 48% were categorized as moderate to severe problems. Abandoned and unfinished developments in Upstate South Carolina may represent a major source of sediment pollution to streams. Well-maintained erosion control devices may be useful in preventing offsite sedimentation. 展开更多
