A Non-linear Non-ideal Model of Simulated Moving Bed Chromatography for Chiral Separations 被引量:8

A non-linear non-ideal model, taking into account non-linear competitive isotherms, axial dispersion, film mass transfer, intraparticle diffusion, and port periodic switching, was developed to simulate the dynamics of simulated moving bed chromatography (SMBC). The model equations were solved by a new efficient numerical technique of orthogonal collocation on finite elements with periodical movement of concentration vector. The simulated SMBC performance is in accordance with the experimental results reported in the literature for separation of l,1'-bi-2-naphthol enantiomers using SMBC. This model is useful for design, operation, optimization and scale-up of non-linear SMBC for chiral separations with significant non-ideal effects, especially for high solute concentration and small intraparticle diffusion coefficient or large chiral stationary phase particle. 展开更多

During migration, birds can show different responses to wind in relation to distance to the goal, experience, ecologi- cal barriers and visibility of landmarks. We analysed the effect of wind (tailwinds and crosswinds) on daily movement rates (for- ward and perpendicular) of Eleonora's falcons using ARGOS satellite telemetry, during their trans-continental autumn migration to Madagascar, in relation to the different crossed regions and individuals' age class. Our results showed that the effect of wind on daily movement rates was not uniform, being stronger in the farthest region from the migration goal, the Sahara desert, with adults being more affected than juveniles in this region. In the Sahel, the results were more conflicting, perhaps because daily movements were more shaped by the distribution of food resources. In Equatorial Africa, daily movement rates were mainly af- fected by crosswinds. Still, it remains unclear which orientation mechanism allows Eleonora's falcons to reach such a narrow wintering area compensating also for wind displacement 展开更多

By using the Collins diffraction formula and expanding the aperture function into a fmite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an analytical formula of the time light intensity distribution for oblique Gaussian beams passing through a moving cat-eye optical lens and going back along the entrance way is deduced. By numerical computation, the variation laws of the time intensity distributions of the cat-eye reflected light with the viewing angle, imaging distance, aperture and instantaneous field of view are given. The results show that the relationship between the light intensity at the return place and the detection time is linear, and it is of inverse proportion only when the viewing angle is very large. For the staring imaging optical lens, the nonlinear extent of the time distribution curve becomes larger with the decrease of the viewing angle. For the instantaneous imaging optical lens, there is still some cat-eye reflected light when the detection system is out of the viewing field of the target lens. 展开更多

The Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method performs well in simulating violent free surface flow and hence becomes popular in the area of fluid flow simulation. However, the implementations of searching neighbouring particles and solving the large sparse matrix equations (Poisson-type equation) are very time-consuming. In order to utilize the tremendous power of parallel computation of Graphics Processing Units (GPU), this study has developed a GPU-based MPS model employing the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) on NVIDIA GTX 280. The efficient neighbourhood particle searching is done through an indirect method and the Poisson-type pressure equation is solved by the Bi-Conjugate Gradient (BiCG) method. Four different optimization levels for the present general parallel GPU-based MPS model are demonstrated. In addition, the elaborate optimization of GPU code is also discussed. A benchmark problem of dam-breaking flow is simulated using both codes of the present GPU-based MPS and the original CPU-based MPS. The comparisons between them show that the GPU-based MPS model outperforms 26 times the traditional CPU model. 展开更多
