The English Department of Harbin Engineering University has initiated a mini-class model in recent years, which has received positive responses from both teachers and students who have experienced the class. By comparing the lecture-style class with mini-class, this paper will introduce the strengths and weaknesses of mini-class according to the author's observation of the class as well as the feedbacks from teachers and students. As is found out, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses, and therefore the model is highly recommended for college English class in other schools展开更多

Beginning from some theoretical considerations, the research objective is to delineate the features of the "new urban geography" of Campania region as it has been formed on the base of the social and economic processes that in the last 30 years have modified the regional urban system in the widest context of Mezzogiorno. To such aim, the paper is articulated in two parts: the first one in which the fundamental passages are re-called in the processes of development of Italian urban areas that have carried to new paradigms object of theoretical approaches still in course of definition, and the second one in which such processes are considered regarding the model of urban development of Campania, on which the research is concentrated. Specifically, the paper presents the case of two "middle cities" in the Campania region: Benevento and Salerno, which play a particularly important role in the design and development of a "regional network of medium-sized cities".展开更多

It is a general knowledge that French as a language is widely spoken internationally whereas Urhobo is mainly spoken in the geographical location where it belongs. It is also spoken, and this, sparingly so, by Urhobo ...It is a general knowledge that French as a language is widely spoken internationally whereas Urhobo is mainly spoken in the geographical location where it belongs. It is also spoken, and this, sparingly so, by Urhobo persons in the Diaspora. Presently, Urhobo has become a language of study at the Delta State University, Abraka. It has also been included in the educational curriculum for study at the lower cadre of secondary school education in the Delta State. This situation has triggered the author's interest in doing a contrastive phonological study. The significance of this study is that it will highlight the salient differences in some of the grammatical aspects in the languages under consideration and also identify the difficulties that learners experience as a result of these difficulties. The author will also, as much as it is possible, proffer solutions to these learning difficulties.展开更多

From a cloud-microphysic...After its landfall in China's mainland in 2006, Typhoon Bilis brought about torrential rainfall amplification at the edge of Guangdong, Jiangxi, and Hunan provinces, causing severe disasters. From a cloud-microphysical perspective, we discuss the differences of cloud-microphysical processes before and during the precipitation amplification and possible causes of the rain- fall amplification by using high-resolution simulation data. The results show that the cloud-microphysical characteristics dur- ing the above two periods are significantly different. With the distinct increase in the rainfall intensity, the cloud hydrometeor contents increase markedly, especially those of the ice-phase hydrometeors including ice, snow and graupel, contributing more to the surface rainfall. The clouds develop highly and vigorously. Comparisons of conversion rates of the cloud hydrometeors between the above two periods show that the distinct increases in the cloud water content caused by the distinct enhancement of the water vapor condensation rate contribute to the surface rainfall mainly in two ways. First, the rain water content increas- es significantly by accretion of cloud water by rain water, which thus contributes to the surface rainfall. Second, the accretion of cloud water by snow increases significantly the content of snow, which is then converted to graupel by accretion of snow by graupel. And then the graupel melts into rain water, which subsequently contributes to the surface rainfall amplification. In summary, a flow chart is given to clarify the cloud-micropbysical cause of the torrential rainfall amplification associated with Bills.展开更多

The collapse resistance of super high-rise buildings subjected to extremely strong earthquake is a critical problem that must be intensively studied. This paper builds up a nonlinear finite element model of the tallest building in China, Shang- hai Tower (632 m), and proposes the modeling method and failure criteria for different structural elements. The dynamic char- acters of this building are then analyzed, and the possible failure modes and collapse processes due to earthquakes are pre- dicted, as well as the corresponding collapse mechanism. This work will be helpful in collapse prevention and the seismic design of super high-rise buildings.展开更多
Seafloor hydrothermal chimneys are significant metal resources and have fundamental effects on marine chemistry balance.Previous studies on growth of the chimneys focused on mineral composition and elemental distribut...Seafloor hydrothermal chimneys are significant metal resources and have fundamental effects on marine chemistry balance.Previous studies on growth of the chimneys focused on mineral composition and elemental distribution in chimney walls,but the isotopic composition of different elements and their correlations remain poorly understood.Here,we report lateral Fe and S isotopes from sulfides across a chimney wall in detail from the Deyin-1 hydrothermal field(DHF) on the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge.Pyrite was characterized by increases in both δ34S and δ56Fe from the exterior to the interior within the chimney wall,which is likely related to enhanced S and Fe isotope fractionation between pyrite and fluids derived from the temperature gradient.Furthermore,δ56Fe displayed a well-defined,linear,positive correlation with δ34S in pyrite from the DHF as well as in pyrite from other areas.A model of hydrothermal pyrite formation suggests that,under conditions with uniform hydrothermal fluid,different temperatures and similar pyrite-fluid exchange degrees could result in the observed linear relationships between δ34S and δ56Fe.The regular and coupled Fe-S isotope variations within the chimney wall efficiently constrain the process of hydrothermal sulfide formation.展开更多

In this paper, we study the single neutral top-higgs (h0) production processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). At the LHC, the production rates of processes ...In this paper, we study the single neutral top-higgs (h0) production processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). At the LHC, the production rates of processes pp →Z(W)h0 are too small to detect ht0. However, with the reasonable parameter values, the cross sections can reach the level of 102 fb for qq→qqh0process and 103 fb for top quark associated production process pp → th0 + X, respectively. At the ILC, we study the single top-higgs production processes e-y → veW-h0 and yy → W+W-h0 in e-y and yy collisions. It is found that the production cross sections can reach the level of a few t-b with reasonable parameter values. Furthermore, such processes with the flavor-changing decay mode h0 tO might provide typical signatures to detected the top-higgs. Therefore, it is hopeful to find the signal of top-higgs at the LHC and ILC experiments via theses processes and test the TC2 model directly.展开更多
