We propose a new scripting model for rapid and easier development of packet processing using shell scripts. In this paper we present EtherPIPE, a character network I/O device, that allows the programmer to access network traffic data as a file through UNIX commands. By setting a UNIX pipe "r' from or to EtherP1PE's output or input with UNIX commands, packets can be easily processed, executing functions such as packet filtering, packet capturing, generating arbitrary packets, and rewriting header information. In order to prove the utilities of our model, we have developed FPGA-based EtherPIPE adapter using a commodity FPGA card and a character device driver featuring new offloading functions. With our prototype implementation, packet scripting works at 1Gbps wire-speed, receiving packets with precise hardware timestamps. This paper argues for use cases of the EtherPIPE, and discusses enhanced formats of character devices for easier network scripting.) 展开更多

This paper provides an overview of the main recommendations and approaches of the methodology on parallel computation application development for hybrid structures. This methodology was developed within the master's thesis project "Optimization of complex tasks' computation on hybrid distributed computational structures" accomplished by Orekhov during which the main research objective was the determination of" patterns of the behavior of scaling efficiency and other parameters which define performance of different algorithms' implementations executed on hybrid distributed computational structures. Major outcomes and dependencies obtained within the master's thesis project were formed into a methodology which covers the problems of applications based on parallel computations and describes the process of its development in details, offering easy ways of avoiding potentially crucial problems. The paper is backed by the real-life examples such as clustering algorithms instead of artificial benchmarks. 展开更多

Scalable Load-Adaptive Web-Based Network Management System: An Architectural Prototype

With the advances in enterprise communication and web technologies, web has evolved into a platform for delivering interactive applications. Web-based applications are revolutionizing both the features that can be delivered and the technologies for developing and deploying applications. In this paper, we present a web-based load-adaptive network management system framework. Our system is scalable, extendable, modular and based on open architecture. It is also load-adaptive as it can adapt to the increase in the number of incoming Web Service requests so that the systems performance will not degrade under heavy request loads. To evaluate the proposed architecture, we built a multi-tiered web application testbed with open-source components widely used in industry. Experimental studies conducted on the testbed demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach. By developing the platform and making it available to the research community, we hope to catalyze the development of an open source stack for Web-based network management and monitoring. 展开更多

Windbelt generators have been proposed as small, green power sources for battery charging applications. Some of the reported results lack detailed information about how key parameters influence the output power of the generator. In this work, we built prototypes with different architectures to study the voltage generation and power delivery as functions of belt tension, length, and electrical load at various wind speeds. We also studied the maximum power delivery conditions before the breakdown of the belt oscillation occurs. Our results are obtained from windbelt generators with two types of architectures: a conventional design with an adjustable belt that uses weight for tension control, and a revised design with a belt oscillation perpendicular to the coil axis. We have concluded that the breakdown of the belt oscillation at lower output resistances is a primary bottleneck that will limit windbelt systems to only very low power applications. 展开更多
