Investigations into muscular imbalances in barefoot versus shod conditions and their relationship with injury severity have not been performed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of wearing athletic shoes on muscular strength and its relationship to lower extremity injuries, specifically female basketball players due to the high incidence of ankle injuries in this population. Methods: During pre-season, 11 female collegiate basketball players underwent inversion and eversion muscle strength testing using an iso- kinetic dynamometer in both a barefoot and shod conditions. The difference between conditions was calculated for inversion and eversion peak torque, time to peak torque as well as eversion-to-inversion peak torque percent strength ratio for both conditions. Lower extremity injuries were documented and ranked in severity. The ranked difference between barefoot and shod conditions for peak torque and time to peak torque as well as percent strength ratio was correlated with injury ranking using a Spearman rho correlation (p) with an a level of 0.05. Results: The ranked differences in barefoot and shod for peak eversion and inversion torque at 120°/s were correlated with their injury ranking. Ranking of the athletes based on the severity of injuries that were sustained during the season was found to have a strong, positive relationship with the difference in peak eversion torque between barefoot and shod (p = 0.78; p = 0.02). Conclusion: It is possible that a large discrepancy between strength in barefoot and shod conditions can predispose an athlete to injury. Nar- rowing the difference in peak eversion torque between barefoot and shod could decrease propensity to injury. Future work should investigate the effect of restoration of muscular strength during barefoot and shod exercise on injury rates.展开更多

To point out concrete directions for generalization and post-education of the three-tiered principles of analgesics treatment of WHO. Methods: We designed a questionnaire about cancer pain treatment. We used it to make inquire in 1040 medical staff from different medical agencies. SPSS software was used to analyze all data. Results: 1027 questionnaires were fit for data analysis. 91.4% of staff working in the primary medical agencies, 95.0% with professional title of assistant professor or lower title, and 83.7% younger than 50-year old. The data displayed that basic knowledge of cancer pain are poorly mastered. More than half investigates cannot evaluate the pain degrees correctly, and have many erroneous understandings about pain. Conclusion: The training of pain treatments for the medical staff working in primary medical agencies should be enhanced because of their poor grasping. Primary agencies should increase the varieties of analgesic drugs and change their attitude and conception of analgesic drugs administration.展开更多

Of these trade disputes, 52 cases were "resolved" and 10 unresolved cases were referred to the Ministry of Labor. In 2009, 692 disputes from various organizations nationally were lodged at the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago--781 in 2010, 778 in 2011 and at September 25th, 2012, 566 were filed (Swamber, 2012). Vincent Cabera, president of the Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union, expressing his grave concern about these statistics cited inter alia, noted that "work stoppages that currently persist in society owed to the malfunctioning of the industrial relations system of the twin island". Legitimate members of the Recognized Majority Union (RMU), who have within the past year at the Campus experienced unresolved conflicts at the departmental level that progressed to trade disputes will be eligible to participate and electronically administered a semi-structured questionnaire developed to determine the frequency and causes of unresolved conflict, their perceptions of its handling, as well as Form A of the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory II (ROCI-II) (Rahim, 1983) to classify the conflict management style of their Heads of departments.展开更多

The results from this research and the exhaustive comparative study carried out by the mechanical engineering staffs at the mechanical laboratory at MOT stations in cities such as: Elche, Pilar de la Horadada and Orihuela from Alicante region [2] have led to the following main conclusions: this paper demonstrates that MOT brake testing results can vary depending on parameters variation such as: distance between rollers, roller diameter, roughness of rollers and velocity of the brake test.展开更多

Two of them are present at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP)joint of the thumb. Fracture of the sesamoid bones of the thumb is a rare injury and the literature on the radial side is seldom reported. We reported a case of a patient with a fracture of the radial sesamoid at the MCP joint of the thumb in order to increase attention regarding this type of injuries. A 44-year-old male, high level gymnastic trainer, was helping one of his athletes during an exercise while he reported a hyperextension trauma to the MCP joint of the right thumb. One week after trauma, he presented to the hand surgeon complaining of a painful thumb at the MCP joint level on its palmar aspect. Standard A-P and lateral X-rays revealed a fracture of the radial sesamoid and the fracture was treated with a splint for 3 weeks. He was able to resumed his entire work 6 weeks after the injury. The sesamoid fractures is an indicator of the magnitude of the hyperextension injury and sometimes associated with tears of the volar plate ligament of the MCP joint. And a failure to recognize the ligament injury may lead to a long-term hyperextension instability on pinching.展开更多
