On the basis of fully explaining peasant workers’ transformation to urban residents, a method for measuring its process has been advanced and then confirmed with the data of March in 2005 from surveys to peasant workers in Wuhan. Finally, the suggestions of acceler-ating peasant workers’ transformation to urban residents to pro-mote the construction of a harmonious society have been drawn from the analysis.展开更多

Fortunately, Artistic Street Renovation Plan was implemented in 2004 and succeeded in revitalizing Hai'an Road. The implementation of this plan transformed this street into an art museum to which lots of photographers and artists were attracted and made a pilgrimage. Besides, it remodeled the local cultural identity and enhanced the community cohesion. Based on the in-depth research on the integral process of Artistic Street Renovation Plan on Hai'an Road, this paper focuses on the analysis of multivariate stakeholders' partnership among government, inhabitants, curatorial group and artists so as to propose protective methods and developmental ideas for historical streets.展开更多

By using a proposed nonuniform integration filter and subspace method estimation, an identification method of NUS systems is developed, based on which either an output soft sensor or a hidden state estimator is developed. The optimizing control is implemented by replacing the sparsely-mea- sured/immeasurable variable with the estimated one. Examples of optimizing control problem are given. The proposed optimizing control strategy in the simulation examples is verified to be very effeetive.展开更多

A comparative investigation of the appreciation and attitudes regarding sustainable construction of civil engineering students at The NUCE (National University of Civil Engineering) in Vietnam, and the Universities of Loughborough and Liverpool in the UK were therefore conducted. Results indicate that students at all three universities appreciate the importance of the development of sustainable construction and have positive attitudes with regards to sustainability. Construction design and appropriate use of materials were two issues generally considered the most important with regards to sustainability, but were also thought to be adequately covered on the courses in all three institutions.展开更多

In most cases, student learning is analyzed only within the context of an academic program using survey methods which do not accurately quantify overall student learning. Contrary to this condition, construction management programs increasingly require students to take level lofthe nationally administered CQE (constructor qualification exam) upon graduation. However, little or no analysis of this data is conducted beyond basic interpretation of the national and program averages provided by the testing agency. Providing a statistical approach to analyze this data and to propose recommended strategies for its improvement, this research develops and investigates statistical methods to analyze the national test data as a program assessment tool for student learning. Specifically, this work seeks to develop performance standards and expectations for students when taking the CQE exam, to define correlations between student GPA (grade point average) and student performance on the CQE exam. Likewise, this work presents methods to identify program weakness and strategies for improvement by comparing the CQE Level 1 exam with ACCE (American council for construction education) accreditation standards.展开更多

Overseen by an "advisory board" with high-profile field, public-authority and AEC (architecture, engineering and construction market) association representatives, a set of hypotheses has been drawn up and subjected to evaluation by means of a detailed survey. The survey, having identified the relevant stakeholders, first attempts to discover how BIM (building information modeling) is currently used. The potentials of the application of BIM in the different processes and target groups are also determined, as well as the barriers and constraints. Enhancement of the considered areas is an important project solution approach: Besides technological aspects, the analysis also focuses on contracting, norms and processes, as well as education, knowledge and role perception.展开更多

As a typical organization representing Chinese universities providing standardization education, China Jiliang University has made remarkable achievements in the educational process. This paper analyzes the current educational status of standardization in China Jiliang University, summarizing the characteristics of its education of standardization and highlighting issues existing in the process of education and training. Based on all of these, related countermeasures and the future development pattern for the education of standardization in China Jiliang University are proposed in the paper, from which the future trends for education of standardization in Chinese universities can be predicted.展开更多

These issues require efficient risk management techniques. The success of construction companies running projects in international markets depends on how the risks arise from the host country conditions as well as the project specific risk factors. Successful management of risks requires identification of risks, construction of a risk model which can be used to assess the magnitude of risks, and implementation of response strategies so that an acceptable risk-return balance can be achieved. The project success usually depends on the combination of all risks, response strategies used to mitigate risks, and a company's ability to manage them. There exists a need to develop risk models containing the risks of doing business in international markets and factors that affect manageability of these risks. One of the market's critical challenges is scheduled management and the understanding and application of program management. This paper uses systematic risk identification, classification and analysis, and measurement and response methodologies to help international contractors quantify the risks of project development and accomplishment.展开更多

Generally speaking, engineering construction quality is related both to national economic development and safety of people and assets. To turn a design map into a materialized object, the construction project involves a large number of elements, such as design, materials, machinery, landform, geological factors, meteorological factors, construction process, technological measures and supervision system. Therefore, quality control holds the key to a construction project.展开更多
