A modified one-dimensional transient hygrothermal model for multilayer wall was proposed using air humidity ratio and temperature as the driving potentials.The solution for the governing equations was obtained numerically by implementing the finite-difference scheme.To evaluate the accuracy of the model,a test system was built up to measure relative humidity and temperature within a porous wall and compare with the prediction of the model.The prediction results have good agreement with the experimental results.For the interface close to indoor side,the maximum deviation of temperature between calculated and test data is 1.87 K,and the average deviation is 0.95 K;the maximum deviation of relative humidity is 11.4%,and the average deviation is 5.7%.For the interface close to outdoor side,the maximum deviation of temperature between prediction and measurement is 1.78 K,and the average deviation is 1.1 K;the maximum deviation of relative humidity is 9.9%,and the average deviation is 4.2%. 展开更多

Previous research studies have successfully demonstrated the use of artificial neural network (ANN) models for predicting critical structural responses and layer moduli of highway flexible pavements. The primary objective of this study was to develop an ANN-based approach for backcalculation of pavement moduli based on heavy weight deflectometer (HWD) test data, especially in the analysis of airport flexible pavements subjected to new generation aircraft (NGA). Two medium-strength sub-grade flexible test sections, at the National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF), were modeled using a finite element (FE) based pavement analysis program, which can consider the non-linear stress-dependent behavior of pavement geomaterials. A multi-layer, feed-forward network which uses an error-backpropagation algorithm was trained to approximate the HWD back-calculation function using the FE program generated synthetic database. At the NAPTF, test sections were subjected to Boeing 777 (B777) trafficking on one lane and Boeing 747 (B747) trafficking on the other lane using a test machine. To monitor the effect of traffic and climatic variations on pavement structural responses, HWD tests were conducted on the trafficked lanes and on the untrafficked centerline of test sections as trafficking progressed. The trained ANN models were successfully applied on the actual HWD test data acquired at the NAPTF to predict the asphalt concrete moduli and non-linear subgrade moduli of the me-dium-strength subgrade flexible test sections. 展开更多

The main objective is to study whether planes can safely land when the fatigue crack appears on the bar. Firstly, the stress intensity factors (K~) of two bar structures are computed, and the iso-stress intensity factor (iso-Kl) model is presented. The model uses the finite element model (FEM) instead of the parameters of material to com- pute the crack propagation. Then, the general relations between Kt vs crack size are obtained for different mate- rials, inner to outer diameter ratios (D^n/Dout) and external crack propagation angles (0). Finally, the FEM anal- ysis results are input to the ANSYS parametric design language(ANSYS-APDL) software. Application of crosswell seismic technique in detecting the gob area of coal mines

To date, significant exploitations of the coal mines have left a considerable number of undetermined empty spaces, also known as the gob areas, behind. The existence of these areas could make the overlaying terrane lose the gravity support. The inhomogeneous sinkage of the overlaying terrane could destroy the buildings constructed on it dramatically, which has currently been a classical geological disaster. In the current study, the crosswell seismic mechanism was addressed and applied to detect the gob area distribution and, espcially, to measure the compaction extent of the gob areas. The results clearly show that the crosswell seismic technique is a very powerful method to discover the distribution and compation degree of the gob areas. More importantly, the current findings provided a novel way for evaluating the compaction extent of the gob areas. 展开更多

This paper proposes a novel approach to comment spam identification based on content analysis. Three main features including the number of links, content repetitiveness, and text similarity are used for comment spam identification. In practice, content repetitiveness is determined by the length and frequency of the longest common substring. Furthermore, text similarity is calculated using vector space model. The precisions of preliminary experiments on comment spam identification conducted on Chinese and English are as high as 93% and 82% respectively. The results show the validity and language independency of this approach. Compared with conventional spam filtering approaches, our method requires no training, no rule sets and no link relationships. The proposed approach can also deal with new comments as well as existing comments. 展开更多

The present study was conducted in Solan Forest Division of Himachal Pradesh covering an area of about 57,158 ha. The aim was to estimate and assess the temporal change in carbon stock of the Chil Working Circle, in two forest ranges of the Division, Solan and Dharampur, over the period of 1956-2011. The inventory data of the working plans of Solan Forest Division from 1956-1957, 1984-1985 and 2002-2003 were used in the present study while field data for biomass estimation was collected for the year 2011.The results showed a declining trend in carbon stock over 1956-1984 period, however, an increasing trend over 1984-2002 was observed, which showed a further increase for the period 2002-2011. These fluctuating trends in the forest carbon stock can be related to increasing anthropogenic pressure on forests and the subsequent introduction of a ban on green felling envisaging efficient forest management, both of which affect the forest carbon pool significantly. 展开更多

To optimize the technological parameter of underground coal gasification (UCG), the experimental results of air gasification, air-steam gasification, oxygen-enrichment steam gasification, pure oxygen steam gasification and two-stage gasification were studied contrastively based on field trial at the Huating UCG project. The results indicate that the average low heat value of gas from air experiment is the lowest (4.1 MJ/Nm3) and the water gas from two-stage gasification experiment is the highest (10.72 MJ/Nm3). The gas productivity of air gasification is the highest and the pure oxygen steam gasification is the lowest. The gasification efficiency of air gasification, air-steam gasification, oxygen-enriched steam gasification, pure oxygen steam gasification and two-stage gasification is listed in ascending order, ranging from 69.88% to 84.81%. Described a contract study on results of a field test using steam and various levels of oxygen enrichment of 21%, 32%, 42% and 100%. The results show that, with the increasing of O2 content in gasifying agents, the gas caloricity rises, and the optimal O2 concentration range to increase the gas caloricity is 30%-40%. Meanwhile, the consumption of O2 and steam increase, and the air consumption and steam decomposition efficiency fall. 展开更多

A two-dimensional steady state model was developed and solved numerically to predict the performance of evaporative condensing regenerator.Two-dimensional parameter distributions of air,solution and refrigerant were calculated by the mathematical model.The solution content first increases and then decreases along the solution flow direction.At y/Hr=0.98(where Hr is the height of regenerator),air humidity increases from 1.99% to 2.348% firstly and then decreases.The experimental results were used to validate mathematical model.It is indicated that the simulation results agree with experimental data well.The results not only show that the mathematical model can be used to predict the performance of regenerator,but also has great value in the design and improvement of evaporative condensing regenerator. 展开更多

In most cases, the snow lies on the ice cover and the ice temperature differs from the atmospheric air temperature. To reveal the correlation of the air temperature with temperature on interfaces air-snow and snow-ice, the known in the thermophysics solution of the problem of the heat transfer through the multilayer plate was applied. Derived solution connects the temperature of air and temperature on the snow-ice interface and satisfactory correlates with data of the field measurements of the temperature within snow layer and ice cover and ice thickness on the Heilongjiang (Amur) River. Results of investigation are recommended for the ice temperature evaluation in engineering practice. 展开更多

A further understanding of the self-heating of coal was obtained by investigating the crossing point temperature(CPT) of different ranks of coal.The tests were carried out using a self-designed experimental system for coal self-heating.50 g(±0.01 g) of coal particles ranging from 0.18 mm to 0.38 mm in size were put into a pure copper reaction vessel attached to the center of a temperature programmed enclosure.The temperature program increased the temperature at a rate of 0.8℃/min.Dry air was permitted to flow into the coal reaction vessel at different rates.The surrounding temperature and the coal temperature were monitored by a temperature logger.The results indicate that CPT is affected by coal rank,moisture,sulfur, and the experimental conditions.Higher ranked coals show higher CPT values.A high moisture content causes a delay phenomenon during the self-heating of the coal.Drying at 40℃decreases the effects of moisture.The reactivity of sulfur components in the coal is low under dry and low-temperature conditions. These components form a film that covers the coal surface and slightly inhibits the self-heating of the coal. The flow rate of dry air,and the heating rate of the surroundings,also affect the self-heating of the coal.The most appropriate experimental conditions for coal samples of a given weight and particle size were determined through contrastive analysis.Based on this analysis we propose that CPTs be determined under the same,or nearly the same conditions,for evaluation of the spontaneous combustion of coal. 展开更多

Their work conditions directly affect the safety of staff and production. In the paper, the performance of the contra-rotating axial flow fan is experi- mentally investigated. The study is focused on the fan performance, the shaft power and the match between the motor and fan efficiency at different blade angles. The results show that the blade angle 43°/26° has the best aerodynamic perfor- mance. The first engine has a greater impact on the fan than the second one. The blade angle with the best aerodynamic performance does not necessarily correspond to the one with the best match between the motor and fan efficiency. The blade angle 43°/24° is the best choice for the operation of the fan in the present study. 展开更多

This study carried out full-scale gas water heater combustion experiments and adopted FDS (fire dynamics simulator) to simulate three scenarios--different balcony environments when using water heater, such as airtight balcony, indoor door with openings and force ventilation to compare with full-scale combustion experiments. According to FDS simulation results, 02, CO and CO2 simulation concentration value correspond with full-scale experimental results. When the indoor O2 concentration was lower than 15%, which causes incomplete combustion, the CO concentration would rise rapidly and even reached above 1,500 ppm, causing death in short time. In addition, when the force ventilation model supplied the water heater with enough air to bum, the indoor CO concentration will keep low and harmless to humans. The study also adopted diverse variables, such as the opening area of window, outdoor wind speed and water heater types, to analyze deeply user's safety regarding gas water heater. In a result, while balcony area is larger than 14 mE, the volume of water heater is below 16 L (33.1 kW), and the indoor window, connecting balcony with room, is closed, if the opening on the outdoor window of the balcony is larger than 0.2 mE, this can ensure the personal security of the indoor space. 展开更多

A short solar chimney prototype was designed and constructed at Botswana Technology Center. A wind turbine was installed to rotate a small DC generator. Temperatures and velocities were measured at different times of the day with thermocouples and hotwire anemometer, respectively. Irradiance was measured with pyranometer. A Delta-T data logger was used to store data at intervals of 30 s. Various graphs depicting the influence of irradiance on temperature, velocity and power have been plotted. Irradiance was found to affect the chimney temperature and subsequently affects chimney air velocity and power produced. Ambient air (wind) velocity was found to have influence on the performance of the solar chimney by increasing chimney air velocity. 展开更多

Efforts have been made on experimental research of a supercavitation device for desalination, which is named rotational supercavitating evaporator (RSCE). The RSCE is characterised by the simple construction and responsive capacity control, and only requires rough filtration of the source water for scaling- and fouling-free operations. The present study has been conducted for the water flow at temperature of around 22-30℃ and atmospheric pressure as the first step for investigation of the performance characteristics of RSCE. The multiply factor extremal experiments conducted with the Box-Wilson's method have revealed the salinity of the condensate, the temperature of steam inside the supercavity, and dependence of the shape of supercavity on the rate of steam extraction and rotation speed of impeller. The shape of impeller and the expected supercavitating effects it generates have been confirmed by experimental results at the rotation speed of 5430 rpm (round per minute). The design of the steam extraction openings has been approved during the evacuation of steam. The experimental dependencies have been obtained in form of statistically valid regression equations, which can be used for engineering design of RSCE. 展开更多

Aircraft engines deteriorate during continuous operation under the action of external factors including fouling, corrosion, and abrasion. The increased surface roughness of compressor passage walls limits airflow and leads to flow loss. However, the partial increase of roughness may also restrain flow separation and reduce flow loss. It is necessary to explore methods that will lower compressor deterioration, thereby improving the overall performance. The experimental research on the effects of surface roughness on highly loaded compressor cascade aerodynamics has been conducted in a low-speed linear cascade wind tunnel. The different levels of roughness are arranged on the suction surface and pressure surface, respectively. Ink-trace flow visualization has been used to measure the flow field on the walls of cascades, and a five-hole probe has been traversed across one pitch at the outlet. By comparing the total pressure loss coefficient, the distributions of the secondary-flow speed vector, and flow fields of various cases, the effects of surface roughness on the aerodynamics of a highly loaded compressor cascade are analyzed and discussed. The results show that adding surface roughness on the suction surface and pressure surface make the loss decrease in most cases. Increasing the surface roughness on the suction surface causes reduced flow speed near the blade, which helps to decrease mixing loss at the cascades outlet. Meanwhile, adding surface roughness on the suction surface restrains flow separation, leading to less flow loss. Various levels of surface roughness mostly weaken the flow turning capacity to various degrees, except in specific cases. 展开更多
