The hybrid system with radiant cooling and dedicated outdoor air not only possesses high energy efficiency, but also creates a healthy and comfortable indoor environment. Indoor air quality will be improved by the dedicated outdoor air system(DOAS) and indoor thermal comfort can be enhanced by the radiant cooling system(RCS). The optimal air-supply mode of the hybrid system and the corresponding design approach were investigated. A full-scale experimental chamber with various air outlets and the ceiling radiant cooling panels(CRCP) was designed and established. The performances of different air-supply modes along with CRCPs were analyzed by multi-index evaluations. Preliminary investigations were also conducted on the humidity stratification and the control effect of different airflow modes to prevent condensation on CRCP. The overhead supply air is recommended as the best combination mode for the hybrid system after comprehensive comparison of the experiment results. The optimal proportion of CRCP accounting for the total cooling capacities in accord with specific cooling loads is found, which may provide valuable reference for the design and operation of the hybrid system. 展开更多

Calculation of stratosphere–troposphere exchange in East Asia cut-off lows:cases from the Lagrangian perspective

In this study,the authors focus on the cut-off low pressure systems(COLs)lingering over East Asia in late spring and early summer and quantify the two-way stratosphere–troposphere exchange(STE)by 3D trajectory integrations,achieved using a revised version of the UK Universities Global Atmospheric Modelling Programme Offline Trajectory Code(Version 3).By selecting 10 typical COLs and calculating the cross-tropopause air mass fluxes,it is found that stratosphere-to-troposphere transport(STT)fluxes exist in the center of COLs;and in the periphery of the COL center,troposphereto-stratosphere transport(TST)fluxes and STT fluxes are distributed alternately.Net transport fluxes in COLs are from stratosphere to troposphere,and the magnitude is about 10-4 kg m-2 s-1.The ratio between the area-averaged STT and TST fluxes increases with increasing strength of the COLs.By adopting appropriate residence time,the spurious transports are effectively excluded.Finally,the authors compare the results with previous studies,and find that the cross-tropopause fluxes(CTFs)induced by COLs are about one to two orders of magnitude larger than global CTFs.COLs play a significant role in local,rapid air mass exchanges,although they may only be responsible for a fraction of the total STE. 展开更多

Charcoal gasification could mitigate the energetic problems in the rural zones since these regions have considerable amounts of wood, which is the base of such a fuel available. This paper presents some CFD (computational fluid dynamic) predictions of the experimental results obtained from the fixed bed gasification of charcoal made in a pilot-scale downdraft reactor using air, which was designed and built by the Research Group in Clean Development Mechanisms and Energy Management, from the National University of Colombia. The quality of the syngas obtained from the process was evaluated through the CO and CO2 percentages measured in its composition. The performance at various air flow rates (measured at the system entrance, through an analog flow meter) is evaluated with the help of 11 thermocouples, which give the information to create a temperature profile, and three load cells to measure the solid fuel conversion rate. To simulate the process, the information from temperature profile, charcoal proximate analysis, air flow meter and load cells were taken as inputs and the syngas composition was obtained as the result from the calculation. The domain was defined as 2D with an axis-symmetric description, using quads as mesh elements. The calculation and results were performed in a CFD commercial code widely used for this type of simulations: ANSYS FLUENT. Thermal comfort and indoor air quality as well as the energy efficiency have been recognized as essential parts of sustainable building assessment. This work aims to analyze the energy conservation of the heat recovery ventilator and to investigate the effect of the air supply arrangement. Three types of mixing ventilation are chosen for the analysis of coupling ANSYS/FLUENT (a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program) with TRNSYS (a building energy simulation (BES) software). The adoption of mutual complementary boundary conditions for CFD and BES provides more accurate and complete information of indoor air distribution and thermal performance in buildings. A typical office-space situated in a middle storey is chosen for the analysis. The office-space is equipped with air-conditioners on the ceiling. A heat recovery ventilation system directly supplies flesh air to the office space. Its thermal performance and indoor air distribution predicted by the coupled method are compared under three types of ventilation system. When the supply and return openings for ventilation are arranged on the ceiling, there is no critical difference between the predictions of the coupled method and BES on the energy consumption of HVAC because PID control is adopted for the supply air temperature of the occupied zone. On the other hand, approximately 21% discrepancy for the heat recovery estimation in the maximum between the simulated results of coupled method and BES-only can be obviously found in the floor air supply ventilation case. The discrepancy emphasizes the necessity of coupling CFD with BES when vertical air temperature gradient exists. Our future target is to estimate the optimum design of heat recovery ventilation system to control CO2 concentration by adjusting flow rate of flesh air. 展开更多

Optimization and Development of New Badminton Machine with Launching Roller

Shuttlecock used for badminton is light in mass so that its flight locus is strongly influenced by air. The highest launching velocity of the shuttlecock by professional badminton players exceeds speeds of over 83.3 m/s (300 km/hr). In this study, a new badminton server machine was developed. The badminton machine can launch the shuttlecocks at wide range of speeds up to 52.8 m/s (190 km/hr) and with many shot types such as smash, clear and so on, which are easily achieved. The finite element models of a shuttlecock with feathers and the badminton machine were made, and the launching simulations of the shuttlecock were tried. The roller with a large diameter attained a higher speed of the shuttlecock than the small rollers for all kinds of launching conditions. The taper angles of the roller edge and the insert height of the shuttlecock relative to the roller surface were optimized for attaining the maximum shuttle speed by the response surface approach. After the optimization, the performance of the badminton machine had been improved about 7% as the shuttle speeds increase and the stress causing the shuttle deterioration decreased. 展开更多
