This paper discusses the application of social network sites in building an interactive English reading community under the guidance of the constructivist learning theory and its influence on the learners' English reading. This SNS-aided reading community puts the students as the center and the teacher the guide, embodying students' subjectivity, equality, and interactivity. The study shows that the interactive English reading community can motivate students to read, improve their reading skills, and thus develop a new SNS-aided English reading model for English learners. 展开更多

However, they should still be concerned with quality control as the most important factor in grabbing the audience's attention. This paper uses statistical research to investigate American audiences' preferences for receiving news, and to identify the problems and questions of Web international news in Taiwan, focusing on three main news websites in Taiwan. The aim of this paper is to establish an argument that the translator could make a contribution to Taiwan's Web news production by using right strategies to improve the translation. By analyzing news websites in Taiwan and comparing new trends of Web news, this paper studies several strategies of Web news translation. 展开更多

Based on arrival time data of seismic phases of ML≥2. 0 earthquakes measured at Shanxi Digital Seismic Network for the period from January 2001 to October 2014,V_P/ V_S in the Shanxi region is calculated using the Wadati single station and multi-earthquake method,and an investigation is conducted into the variation behavior of V_P/ V_S in the Shanxi region before and after the three earthquakes of MS≥4. 5 in 2010. Our study finds that abnormal V_P/ V_S appeared earlier at distant stations before all of the three earthquakes,which is at the time range from 6 months to 1 year before the earthquakes,and later at near stations,at the time range 10 days to 2 months before earthquakes. Therefore,it s possible to narrow down the scope of the location in earthquake prediction from the distant and near station data. The calculations of Dongshan seismic station indicate that the size of the residual of the origin time has impact on the detail of V_P/ V_S variation,thus,appropriate thresholds should firstly be set for the residuals of origin time at each seismic station in practical application,to ensure scientific and steady V_P/ V_S calculations. 展开更多

On the basis of multifaceted investigations of approximately 600 phytosociological surveys of foxtail meadows taken in years 2002-2012 in river valleys with the assistance of the Braun-Blanquet method, the authors carried out evaluation of the floristic composition with respect to phytosociological structure, floristic variability, degree of synanthropisation and life form structures. In addition, they ascertained the dependence of floristic variability of Alopecuretum pratensis phytocenoses on site conditions determined using: the phytoindication method and the laboratory analyses assessed the soil content of available forms of P and K and of Mg. The greatest areas among the recognised syntaxons are taken up by patches of a typical sub-association developed in fresh sites on soils of lightly acid reaction and moderate nitrogen availability. Floristic variability of Alopecuretum pratensis is characterised by: presence in the phytosociological structure of species characteristic for other syntaxons, floristic abundance and botanical structure, domination of species of the 1 st and 2nd degree of stability, high proportion of synanthropic species, values of the floristic diversity index (H'), natural and fodder score values. Geobotanical variability of foxtail meadows confirms difficulties with unequivocal determination of the systematic position of the Alopecuretum pratensis association. 展开更多

This study examines social vulnerability by exploring the socio-economic factors, infrastructures, and social networks that can determine how prone and how prepared the rain-fed farming communities are to the adverse impacts of climate change. Increased variability in climatic conditions due to climate change seriously affects the productivity of rain-fed farms. The rain-fed farming communities in the Philippines are located in poor and environmentally fragile rural areas. Their vulnerability is greatly affected by restricted entitlement and access to social and economic capitals. This study is framed on qualitative approach to provide a rich and in-depth understanding on the elements of vulnerability based on the capacities and the practical affairs of life in rain-fed communities. The three subject communities from two agricultural provinces are examined to understand how the context and interactions of people can explicate sociological themes on the social dimension of climate change. The usefulness of multi-site study in probing the unique ways of how people understand and respond to certain environmental issue is part of reflections about the methodology. 展开更多

The fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary sequences in the Nihewan Basin, northern China, are important for studying Quaternary land mammal evolution and Paleolithic settlements in the high-latitude temperate East Asia. Here we report new magnetostrati- graphic results that constrain age of the Hougou Paleolithic site in this basin. Magnetite and hematite were identified as carriers of the characteristic remanent magnetizations, with the former being dominant. Magnetic polarity stratigraphy shows that the Hougou sequence recorded the very late Matuyama reverse chron and the Brunhes normal chron. The age of the Hougou Paleolithic site was estimated to be 395 ka based on an averaged rate of sediment accumulation. The combination of our mag- netostratigraphy and previously published chronological data for early Paleolithic or human sites in the high-latitude northern China may document a persistent colonization of the hostile high-latitude areas of the eastern Old World during the mid- die-early Pleistocene. 展开更多

An in-situ GC-ECD system was used to measure halocarbons at Shangdianzi (SDZ) GAW regional station. In this paper, we reported observational results of atmospheric CFC- 11 (CCI3F) mixing ratios from April 2007 to March 2008. The CFC- 11 time series showed large variability. Approximately 62% observed values were filtered as non-background data. The median, 10% and 90% percentiles of CFC-11 background mixing ratios were 245.4 ppt (10-12 mol/mol), 244.6 ppt and 246.1 ppt, respectively; whereas those of non-background CFC- 11 mixing ratios were 254.7, 246.6 and 272.1 ppt, respectively. Significant differences in background and non-background CFC-11 mixing ratios were observed between summer and autumn, mainly because of the CFC-11 stored in loam being prone to atmospheric release in hot seasons. Comparison of tile SDZ data with the five AGAGE stations suggested agreement with mid-high latitude Northern Hemisphere stations MHD, THD and RPB. The SDZ data were higher than that of Southern Hemisphere stations CGO and SMO. Higher CFC-11 mixing ratios measured in different seasons were always associated with winds from the W-WSW-SW sector, indicating that the airflow coming from this wind sector has a positive contribution to CFC- 11 concentrations. The CFC-11 mixing ratios were higher in autumn and summer than in spring and winter, in which its mixing ratios were very close to the atmospheric background level. This was happened especially when airflow originated from the NNE-NE-ENE-E sector, indicating the air masses coming from these wind directions was relatively clean. 展开更多

Sun-photometer measurements at Hefei,an urban site located in central East China,were examined to investigate the variations of aerosol loading and optical properties.It is found that aerosol optical thickness(AOT)keeps higher in winter/spring and gets relatively lower in summer/autumn.The large AOT in winter is caused by anthropogenic sulfate/nitrate aerosols,while in spring dust particles elevate the background aerosol loading and the excessive fine-mode particles eventually lead to severe pollution.There is a dramatic decline of AOT during summer,with monthly averaged AOT reaching the maximum in June and soon the minimum in August.Meanwhile,aerosol size decreases consistently and single scattering albedo(SSA)reaches its minimum in July.During summertime large-sized particles play a key role to change the air from clean to mild-pollution situation,while the presence of massive small-sized particles makes the air being even more polluted.These complicated summer patterns are possibly related to the three key processes that are active in the high temperature/humidity environment concentrating on sulfate/nitrate aerosols,i.e.,gas-to-particle transformation,hygroscopic growth,and wet scavenging.Regardless of season,the increase of SSA with increasing AOT occurs across the visible and near-infrared bands,suggesting the dominant negative/cooling effect with the elevated aerosol loading.The SSA spectra under varying AOT monotonically decrease with wavelength.The relatively large slope arises in summer,reinforcing the dominance of sulfate/nitrate aerosols that induce severe pollution in summer season around this city. 展开更多
