Toppling failure of rock mass/soil slope is an important geological and environmental problem.Clarifying its failure mechanism under different conditions has great significance in engineering.The toppling failure of a...Toppling failure of rock mass/soil slope is an important geological and environmental problem.Clarifying its failure mechanism under different conditions has great significance in engineering.The toppling failure of a cutting slope occurred in a hydropower station in Kyushu,Japan illustrates that the joint characteristic played a significant role in the occurrence of rock slope tipping failure.Thus,in order to consider the mechanical properties of jointed rock mass and the influence of geometric conditions,a simplified analytical approach based on the limit equilibrium method for modeling the flexural toppling of cut rock slopes is proposed to consider the influence of the mechanical properties and geometry condition of jointed rock mass.The theoretical solution is compared with the numerical solution taking Kyushu Hydropower Station in Japan as one case,and it is found that the theoretical solution obtained by the simplified analysis method is consistent with the numerical analytical solution,thus verifying the accuracy of the simplified method.Meanwhile,the Goodman-Bray approach conventionally used in engineering practice is improved according to the analytical results.The results show that the allowable slope angle may be obtained by the improved Goodman-Bray approach considering the joint spacing,the joint frictional angle and the tensile strength of rock mass together.展开更多
The authors constructed a simplified model of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) carbon assimilation and dry matter accumulation (DMA) process which consisted of two independent variables, day length (L) and total...The authors constructed a simplified model of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) carbon assimilation and dry matter accumulation (DMA) process which consisted of two independent variables, day length (L) and total daily radiation (TDR). Leaf water potential (Ψ) was incorporated into the simplified growth model based on the assumption that both light use efficiency (α) and CO 2 conductance of assimilation (g c) were depressed by water limitation. Finally,Ψ was estimated from a regression equation in which the independent variables were relative soil water content in the upper 80 cm (θ R,80 ), ambient temperature (T a), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), the cumulative leaf water potential below thresholds of -1.5 MPa (Ψ c,1.5 ). Some applications in research program of field experiment of atmosphere_land surface processes in Heihe River region were tested. The simulated data agreed well with the data observed at Linze oasis in 1989 for various levels of water supply and at Zhangye oasis in 1992 in the field. The analysis and simulation using the model demonstrated that the simplified growth model could describe very well the DMA process of spring wheat with and without water limitation in the region of HEIFE (Heihe field experiment).展开更多

I analyze the axiology of recentivism in two categories: recens (i.e., "now") and pure-mindedness. Also, I differentiate among pure-mindedness, which is a quality of homo euthyphronicus (i.e., pure-minded man), simplicity, which is a quality of homo simplex (i.e., simple man), and complexity, which is a quality of homo technicus (i.e., technical man). Moreover, I present different meanings of pure-mindedness which form the basis for reflection in the axiology of recentivism, i.e., the ethics of pure-mindedness, euthyphronics, and esthetics. Then, I use these meanings of pure-mindedness to define the attitude of homo euthyphronicus. Homo euthyphronicus is a man who seeks balance between simplicity and complexity in the modem world, which is highly complex and full of civilization-related threats, while stressing the importance of axioiogical values.展开更多
A total 23 morphological traits, 19 AFLP-primer combinations, 80 RAPD primers and 32 SSR primer pair were used to compare the informativeness and efficiency of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), amplified fragme...A total 23 morphological traits, 19 AFLP-primer combinations, 80 RAPD primers and 32 SSR primer pair were used to compare the informativeness and efficiency of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers in establishing genetic relationships among 29 almond cultivars and three related wild species. SSRs presented a high level of polymorphism and greater information content, as assessed by the expected hetrozygosity, compared to AFLPs and RAPDs. The lowest values of expected hetrozygosity were obtained for AFLPs; however AFLPs showed the highest efficiency, owing to their capacity to reveal large numbers of bands per reaction, which led to high values for various types of indices of diversity. All the three techniques discriminated almond genotypes very effectively, except that SSRs failed to discriminate between ‘Monagha’ and ‘Sefied’ almond genotypes. The correlation coefficients of similarity were statistically significant for all the three marker systems, but were lower for the SSR data than for RAPDs and AFLPs. For all the markers, high similarity in dendrogram topologies was obtained, although some differences were observed. All the dendrograms, including that obtained by the combined use of all the marker data, reflect relationships for most of cultivars according to their geographic diffusion. AMOVA detected more variation among cultivated and related wild species of almond within each geographic group. Bootstrap analysis revealed that the number of markers used was sufficient for reliable estimation of genetic similarity and for meaningful comparisons of marker types.展开更多

It was confirmed by laser desorption/ionization mass spectroscopy measurements that pure dimer phase of coronenes can be obtained by controlling the fusing and sublimation temperatures. The crystal structure of the dimer phase was analyzed by synchrotron XRD (X-ray diffraction) experiments. It was also found that very bright red light is emitted by irradiating ultra violet light (λ = 350 nm) to the dimer phase. Objective To investigate the effect of acupressure therapy as an adjunctive therapy to pharmacological treatment on pain and health-related quality of life(QOL)among knee osteoarthritis(KOA)patients.Methods One hundre...Objective To investigate the effect of acupressure therapy as an adjunctive therapy to pharmacological treatment on pain and health-related quality of life(QOL)among knee osteoarthritis(KOA)patients.Methods One hundred KOA patients were recruited from the orthopedic out-patient clinic of the institute.The patients were allocated randomly(flipping-coin simple randomization method)into an intervention group(n=50)and a control group(n=50).Patients in the intervention group received acupressure therapy along with pharmacological treatment.Patients in the control group did not receive acupressure therapy but continued their pharmacological treatment.Changes in pain(visual analog scale,VAS)and QOL(short-form 36-item health survey,SF-36)scores at baseline(A0),during training session(A1),follow-up at the 3rd month after training(A2)and follow-up at the 6th month after training session(A3)were collected and examined.Multiple regression analysis was used to check the relationship between pain and SF-36 domains.Results The VAS score of participants in the intervention group decreased at A3(P=0.001).Scores of physical functioning(PF),role limitations due to emotional problems(RE)and mental health(MH)of SF-36 in the intervention group improved more as compared with the control group.Patients in the intervention group with improvement in VAS(pain)score showed greater changes in mean scores of all domains of SF-36 from baseline(all P<0.05).Except bodily pain(BP),the other domains of SF-36 were negatively correlated with pain score.Conclusion Acupressure therapy with pharmacological treatment can improve health-related QOL and pain among KOA patients.展开更多
