The investigation has been conducted in the heat exchanger tube inserted with various twisted-tape numbers for co- and counter-twist arrangements for the turbulent air flow, Reynolds number (Re) from 5300 to 24000. The typical single twisted-tape inserts at two twist ratios, y/w = 4 and 5, are used as the base case, while the other multiple twisted-tape inserts are aty/w = 4 only. The experimental results of heat transfer and pressure drop in terms of Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor 00, respectively, reveal that Nu increases with the increment of Re and of twisted-tape number. The values of Nu for the inserted tube are in a range of 1.15-2.12 times that for the plain tube while f is 1.9-4.1 times. The thermal enhancement factor of the inserted tube under similar pumping power is evaluated and found to be above unity except for the single and the double co-twisted tapes. The quadruple counter-twisted tape insert provides the maximum thermal performance.展开更多
Experiments and simulations on flow and heat transfer behavior of Therminol-55 liquid phase heat transfer fluid have been conducted in a ribbed tube with the outer diameter and inner diameter 25.0 and 20.0 mm,pitch an...Experiments and simulations on flow and heat transfer behavior of Therminol-55 liquid phase heat transfer fluid have been conducted in a ribbed tube with the outer diameter and inner diameter 25.0 and 20.0 mm,pitch and rib height of 4.5 and 1.0 mm.respectively.Experimental results show that the heat transfer and thermal performance of Therminol-55 liquid phase heat transfer fluid in the ribbed tube are considerably improved compared to those of the smooth tube.The Nusselt number increase with the increase of Reynolds number.The increase in heat transfer rate of the ribbed tube has a mean value of 2.24 times.Also,the pressure drop results reveal that the average friction factor of the ribbed tube is in a range of 2.4 and 2.8 times over the smooth tube.Numerical simulations of three-dimensional flow behavior of Therminol-55 liquid phase heat transfer fluid are carried out using three different turbulence models in the ribbed tube.The numerical results show that the heat transfer of ribbed tube is improved because vortices are generated behind ribs,which produce some disruptions to fluid flow and enhance heat transfer compared with smooth tube.The numerical results prove that the ribbed tube can improve heat transfer and fluid flow performances of Therminol liquid phase heat transfer fluid.展开更多
The article presents an experimental and numerical study on thermal performance enhancement in a constant heatfluxed square-duct inserted diagonally with 45° discrete V-finned tapes(DFT).The experiments were carr...The article presents an experimental and numerical study on thermal performance enhancement in a constant heatfluxed square-duct inserted diagonally with 45° discrete V-finned tapes(DFT).The experiments were carried out by varying the airflow rate through the tested square duct with DFT inserts for Reynolds number from 4000 to 25000.The effect of the DFT with V-tip pointing upstream at various relative fin heights and pitches on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics was experimentally investigated.Both the heat transfer and pressure drop were presented in terms of Nusselt number and friction factor respectively.Several V-finned tape characteristics were introduced such as fin- to duct-height ratio or blockage ratio(R_B=e/H = 0.075,0.1,0.15 and 0.2),fin pitch to duct height ratio(R_P= P/H=0.5,1.0,1.5 and 2.0) and fin attack angle,α = 45°.The experimental results reveal that the heat transfer and friction factor values with DFT inserts increase with the increment of R_B but the decrease of R_P.The inserted square-duct at R_B = 0.2 and R_P = 0.5 provides the highest heat transfer and friction factor while the one with R_B= 0.1 and R_P= 1.5 yields the highest thermal performance.Also,a numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the flow structure and heat transfer mechanism inside the tested duct with DFT inserts.展开更多

The additional disturbance and secondary flow in the vicinity of the tube wall generated by STT are higher compared to that induced by the PTT is referred as the reason for better performance.Over the range considered,the Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in a tube with STT are respectively,1.03 to 1.14,1.05 to 1.25 and 1.02 to 1.06 times of those in tube with PTT.An empirical correlation is also formulated to match with experimental data of Nusselt number and friction factor for STT and PTT.展开更多

The pipeline containing hot oil will expand longitudinally due to ...In-service hydrocarbons must be transported at high temperature and high pressure to ease the flow and prevent the solidification of the wax fraction. The pipeline containing hot oil will expand longitudinally due to the rise in temperature. If such expansion is resisted, for example by frictional effects over a kilometer or so of pipeline, compressive axial stress will be built up in the pipe-wall. The compressive forces are often so large that they induce vertical buckling of buffed pipelines, which can jeopardize the structural integrity of the pipeline. A typical initial imperfection named continuous support mode of submarine pipeline was studied. Based on this type of initial imperfection, the analytical solution of vertical thermal buckling was introduced and an elastic-plasticity finite element analysis (FEA) was developed. Both the analytical and the finite element methodology were applied to analyze a practice in Bohai Gulf, China. The analyzing results show that upheaval buckling is most likely to build up from the initial imperfection of the pipeline and the buckling temperature depends on the amplitude of initial imperfection. With the same amplitude of initial imperfection, the triggering temperature difference of upheaval buckling increases with covered depth of the pipeline, the soil strength and the friction between the pipeline and subsoil.展开更多

Copper was used as an interlayer for joining the dissimilar materials a...Titanium tube and stainless steel tube plate were welded by an innovative friction welding of tube to tube plate using an external tool (FWTPET). Copper was used as an interlayer for joining the dissimilar materials and also to minimize the effect of intermetallics formed at the joint interface. The process parameters that govern FWTPET process are plunge rate, rotational speed, plunge depth, axial load and flash trap profile. Among them, the flash trap profile of the tube has a significant influence on the joint integrity. Various flash trap profiles like vertical slots, holes, zig-zag holes, and petals were made on the titanium tube welded to the stainless steel tube plate. Macroscopic and microscopic studies reveal defect-free joints. The presence of copper interlayer and intermetallics was evident from X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) studies. The microhardness survey was presented across and along the interface. A novel test procedure called “plunge shear test” was developed to evaluate the joint properties of the welded joints. The highest shear fracture load of 31.58 kN was observed on the sample having petals as flash trap profile. The sheared surfaces were further characterized using SEM for fractography.展开更多

Conclusions are drawn that the quality corresponding t...Two-phase flow pressure drop measurements are made during phase change heat transfer process of R-22 in small horizontal smooth tubes with 2.5 mm inside diameter. Conclusions are drawn that the quality corresponding to pressure gradient peak value of small tubes became higher than that of large tubes and that effects of quality on pressure drop become weak as the increase of mass flux. The experiment data are compared with predicted values of the state-of-the-art correlations from the open literature, which indicates that most of the state-of-the-art correlations fail to predict the present experimental data. Chisholm model shows a relatively better predictive ability than the other empirical correlations because it has the lowest mean deviation of 26.7%. But the predicted values of Chisholm model are 50% lower than experimental data when quality becomes higher. In this regard, an new empirical correlation based on Chisholm model is developed and this modified Chisholm correlation can describe 95% of the present data with ±20% mean deviations.展开更多

Test runs are conducted using the water as the working fluid with Reynolds number range between 2000 and 12000 for WN-TT and P-TT. It is found that Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in the tube equipped with WN-TT appreciably higher than those in the tube fitted with P-TT and plain tube. Over the range considered Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in a tube with WN-TT are respectively,1.08 to 1.31,1.1 to 1.75 and 1.05 to 1.13 times of those in tube with P-TT. The better performance of WN-TT is due to combined effects of the follow-ing factors:(1) common swirling flow generated by P-TT,(2) additional turbulence offered by the wire nails. Air flow and heat transfer over a 4 × 4 ( columns × rows) finned-tube heat exchanger with rectangular fins was investigated experimentally in a wind tunnel with constant wall temperatures condition. The air flow velocity based on the minimum flow cross-section area over flow channel ranged from 13.8 to 50. 2 m/s, the heal transfer rate ranged from 21.8 to47. 1 kW, and the air temperatures increase ranged from 10. 9 to 19. 8 ℃. The present results were compared with results calculated from correlations proposed by CSPE. For air flow velocity less than 25 m/s, these two results of heat transfer agreed well with each other, whereas for larger velocity, our test data disagreed with the CSPE correlations. For the friction factor, present data are much higher than the predicted results in the whole range. Finally, correlations for friction factors and heat transfer coefficients are DrODosed based on the experimental results.展开更多

The gap sizes are 0.9, 1.4 and 2.4mm, respectively. The experiments are conducted under condition of 1atm. The water in the annuli is heated by high temperature water reversely flowing through the inner tube and the outer annulus. The results show that the flow pattern begin to change from laminar to turbulent before Reynolds number approaches 2000, the flow resistance in annulus has little relations with the temperature difference and ways of being heated, but mainly depends on the ratio of mass flux to the width of annulus.展开更多

Meanwhile, the problem of serious frictional wear between drill pipe and casing are becoming more significant due to long time of drilling, high probability of dogleg severity, high contact normal stress between drill pipe and casing etc. Tool sticking may also occur due to large frictional resistance. Therefore, higher requirements are made on the study of how to predict and prevent the wear of drill pipe and casing during drilling. Multi-wall carbon nanotubes reinforced Mg-14Li-1Al composite(MWCNTs/Mg-14Li-1Al) was prepared by the processes of electrophoretic deposition, friction stir processing, and cold rolling. The microstructure and mechanic...Multi-wall carbon nanotubes reinforced Mg-14Li-1Al composite(MWCNTs/Mg-14Li-1Al) was prepared by the processes of electrophoretic deposition, friction stir processing, and cold rolling. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the composite were investigated. The results show that, the microhardness of the composite is up to HV 84.4, which is 91.38% higher than that of the as-cast matrix alloy(HV 44.1). The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the composite are 259 and 313 MPa, which are 135.45% and 115.86% higher than those of the as-cast matrix alloy, respectively, and a high specific strength of 221.98 k N·m/kg is obtained. In the composite, the MWCNTs serve as nucleation particles during the friction stir processing and cold rolling, causing dynamic recrystallization and grain refinement. Furthermore, MWCNTs hinder the movement of dislocations and transfer the load from the matrix alloy, thus improving the strength.展开更多

The ex...Effects of insertion of tandem wire coil elements used as turbulator on heat transfer and turbulent flow friction characteristics in a uniform heat-flux square duct are experimentally investigated in this work. The experiment is conducted for turbulent flow with the Reynolds number from 4000 to 25000. The wire coil element is inserted into the duct with a view to generating a swirl flow that assists to wash up the flow trapped in the duct corners and then increase the heat transfer rate of the test duct. Apart from the full-length coil, 1D and 2D length coil elements placed in tandem inside the duct with various free-space lengths are introduced to reduce the friction loss. The results obtained from these wire coil element inserts are also compared with those from the smooth duct. The experimental results reveal that the use of wire coil inserts for the full-length coil, 1D and 2D coil elements with a short free-space length leads to a considerable increase in heat transfer and friction loss over the smooth duct with no insert. The full-length wire coil provides higher heat transfer and friction factor than the tandem wire coil elements under the same operating conditions. Also, performance evaluation criteria to assess the real benefits in using the wire coil insert into the square duct are determined.展开更多

In this regard, an new empirical correlation based on Chisholm model is developed and this modified Chisholm correlation can describe 95% of the present data with ±20% mean deviations.
文摘This paper deals with the experimental investigation on Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal en-hancement factor of a double pipe heat exchanger equipped with twisted tape consisting wire nails(WN-TT) and plain twisted tapes(P-TT) with three different twist ratios of y 2.0,4.4 and 6.0. Test runs are conducted using the water as the working fluid with Reynolds number range between 2000 and 12000 for WN-TT and P-TT. It is found that Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in the tube equipped with WN-TT appreciably higher than those in the tube fitted with P-TT and plain tube. Over the range considered Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in a tube with WN-TT are respectively,1.08 to 1.31,1.1 to 1.75 and 1.05 to 1.13 times of those in tube with P-TT. The better performance of WN-TT is due to combined effects of the follow-ing factors:(1) common swirling flow generated by P-TT,(2) additional turbulence offered by the wire nails. Em-pirical correlations for Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor are also formulated from the experimental results of WN-TT and P-TT.

文摘Presents a set of data for flow and heat transfer of finned-tube bundle under the condition of high air flow velocity. Air flow and heat transfer over a 4 × 4 ( columns × rows) finned-tube heat exchanger with rectangular fins was investigated experimentally in a wind tunnel with constant wall temperatures condition. The air flow velocity based on the minimum flow cross-section area over flow channel ranged from 13.8 to 50. 2 m/s, the heal transfer rate ranged from 21.8 to47. 1 kW, and the air temperatures increase ranged from 10. 9 to 19. 8 ℃. The present results were compared with results calculated from correlations proposed by CSPE. For air flow velocity less than 25 m/s, these two results of heat transfer agreed well with each other, whereas for larger velocity, our test data disagreed with the CSPE correlations. For the friction factor, present data are much higher than the predicted results in the whole range. Finally, correlations for friction factors and heat transfer coefficients are DrODosed based on the experimental results.
文摘Considering the special resistance characteristics of fluids flowing through ducts with small gaps, experiments are performed to investigate the resistance characteristics of single-phase water, which is forced to flow through ver tical annuli. The gap sizes are 0.9, 1.4 and 2.4mm, respectively. The experiments are conducted under condition of 1atm. The water in the annuli is heated by high temperature water reversely flowing through the inner tube and the outer annulus. The results show that the flow pattern begin to change from laminar to turbulent before Reynolds number approaches 2000, the flow resistance in annulus has little relations with the temperature difference and ways of being heated, but mainly depends on the ratio of mass flux to the width of annulus.
文摘This paper investigates process parameter effects on microstructure and mechanical properties of the tubes processed via recently developed friction assisted tube straining(FATS)method.For this purpose,design of experiment was used to arrange finite element analyses and experimental tests.Numerical and experimental tests were executed by changing rotary speed,feed rate and die angle.Taguchi design results show that increasing feed rate and decreasing rotary speed enhance Zener-Hollomon(Z)parameter and decrease average grain size,while die angle has no considerable effect.Increasing Z value reduces grain size and enhances flow stress of the processed samples,while the experiment with the highest Z value refines initial microstructure from 40 to 8μm and increases flow stress by 5 times.
文摘Frictional wear of inner walls of drill pipe and casing is produced by rotational advance of drill pipe in the casing due to the joint effect of drilling fluid, temperature and contact load during drilling, among which the main wear is on the drill string. With development of drilling technology, deep well, ultradeep well, high angle well, directional well, extended reach well and horizontal well are taking more and more proportion. Meanwhile, the problem of serious frictional wear between drill pipe and casing are becoming more significant due to long time of drilling, high probability of dogleg severity, high contact normal stress between drill pipe and casing etc. Tool sticking may also occur due to large frictional resistance. Therefore, higher requirements are made on the study of how to predict and prevent the wear of drill pipe and casing during drilling. The residual strength of the worn casing is also studied by analysis of the law of drill pipe's effect on the casing wear in this paper.

文摘Multi-wall carbon nanotubes reinforced Mg-14Li-1Al composite(MWCNTs/Mg-14Li-1Al) was prepared by the processes of electrophoretic deposition, friction stir processing, and cold rolling. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the composite were investigated. The results show that, the microhardness of the composite is up to HV 84.4, which is 91.38% higher than that of the as-cast matrix alloy(HV 44.1). The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the composite are 259 and 313 MPa, which are 135.45% and 115.86% higher than those of the as-cast matrix alloy, respectively, and a high specific strength of 221.98 k N·m/kg is obtained. In the composite, the MWCNTs serve as nucleation particles during the friction stir processing and cold rolling, causing dynamic recrystallization and grain refinement. Furthermore, MWCNTs hinder the movement of dislocations and transfer the load from the matrix alloy, thus improving the strength.
文摘Effects of insertion of tandem wire coil elements used as turbulator on heat transfer and turbulent flow friction characteristics in a uniform heat-flux square duct are experimentally investigated in this work. The experiment is conducted for turbulent flow with the Reynolds number from 4000 to 25000. The wire coil element is inserted into the duct with a view to generating a swirl flow that assists to wash up the flow trapped in the duct corners and then increase the heat transfer rate of the test duct. Apart from the full-length coil, 1D and 2D length coil elements placed in tandem inside the duct with various free-space lengths are introduced to reduce the friction loss. The results obtained from these wire coil element inserts are also compared with those from the smooth duct. The experimental results reveal that the use of wire coil inserts for the full-length coil, 1D and 2D coil elements with a short free-space length leads to a considerable increase in heat transfer and friction loss over the smooth duct with no insert. The full-length wire coil provides higher heat transfer and friction factor than the tandem wire coil elements under the same operating conditions. Also, performance evaluation criteria to assess the real benefits in using the wire coil insert into the square duct are determined.
