Resource management framework for manufacturing grid

Based on open grid service architecture (OGSA) and Globus Toolkit 3. 0 (GT3), a manufacturing grid (MG) is proposed to realize resource sharing and collaborative working among manufacturing enterprises. Nevertheless, resource management in MG is much more complicated than that in other grid applications due to the geographically distributed manufacturing resources, which range from CAD, CAPP and CAE to various kinds of machine tools. With the interaction of manufacturing grid information service (MGIS, developed by ourselves) and globus resource allocation manager (GRAM, provided by GT3), a resource management framework is presented to perform the functions of resource encapsulation, registry, discovery and monitoring. Furthermore, the application architecture and an example are depicted to illustrate the utilization of the resource management system.

A Review of Approaches and Challenges of BIM Education in Construction Management

As BIM （building information modeling） became the gold standard of the architecture, construction, and engineering industry, lack of skilled BIM professionals is considered one of the major challenges. It is therefore of significant importance that CM （construction management） programs train future construction professionals in the capabilities and advantages of BIM technology. This paper presents the findings of a comprehensive review of the implementation of BIM education in CM programs and summarizes the process of BIM adoption, existing educational approaches, and identified challenges in the implementation process. The information presented in this paper serves as a guide to CM programs that are new to and in the progress of implementing BIM education.

Selection of Risk Management Strategies in Informal Construction Sector

The informal construction sector is unregulated and operates in a risky environment, thus the need for adoption of appropriate risk management strategies for its survival is essential. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine methods used in choosing appropriate risk response strategy in informal construction sector in Tanzania. The study involved construction workers in informal sector in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza in Tanzania. Dar es Salaam and Mwanza are among big cities in Tanzania having more informal construction workers. Questionnaires were prepared in English, translated in Kiswahili and administered by research assistants on informal construction workers. Workers were purposively selected. Out of 1,000 questionnaires distributed 849 questionnaires were fairly filled equating to 84.9%. The collected data was coded and analysed using descriptive statistics mainly frequencies cross tabulation and Chi-square tests. The study established that majority of informal construction workers choose risk response strategies by using common sense followed by previous experience. Within the location, the methods significantly differ whereby Dar es Salaam was dominated by common sense and Mwanza dominated by previous experience. Likewise, use of common sense among respondents was significantly different between gender, age group, level of education and experience. This implies that apart from formal process of choosing risk response strategies, the informal construction sector has its own surviving strategies. The issue of location, gender and experience are essential for risk management in informal construction sector.

From the ＂strict governance on the pasty＂ to the ＂comprehensive and strict governance on the party,＂ it doesn＇t only mean that the ＂comprehensive＂ word is added in literal, but the content of innovation and requirements should be improved, and it has the following rules： Our country should adhere to combine the establishment of the ideological paxty and the governance of the institutional pasty, and our country should adhere to combine the comprehensive and strict governance on the pasty and the control of the ＂key minority.＂ Our country should adhere to the combination of strengthening the main responsibility and playing the role of people＇s supervision and also should adhere to combine the strict punishment with the effective prevention.

The Continuous Use of Asbestos in Ghana Despite Its Hazards （Case Study Area： Sekondi-Takoradi）

This paper reported on a research work conducted with the aims of investigating the regulatory position regarding the use of asbestos and also of assessing the evidence of the continuous use of asbestos cement products in the construction industries in Ghana, using Sekondi-Takoradi as a case study area. This paper adopted both quantitative and qualitative research approach to seek information from, landlords, and manufacturers of asbestos cement products, parliament and other Government Agencies. Data was obtained through questionnaire, interview and field work survey. In all, a total of 20 questionnaires were distributed. The research emerged that about 1200 housing units roofed with asbestos cement roofing sheet were constructed by the state owned construction company between 1976 and 2000 in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis （about 12,000 nationwide）, a period when the risk of asbestos was known in Ghana. The study in the newly developing areas in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis indicated that, out of every 100 housing unit being built, at least 40 of these were roofed with asbestos cement corrugated roofing sheet. It was also emerged from this research that there were no laws prohibiting the use, manufacturing or importation of asbestos products in Ghana. And this exposes maintenance workers in the building construction industries to the risk of asbestos related diseases. The research recommended that those who have asbestos materials present in their premises should take action to manage the risk so that no one will unknowingly disturb it and also provide information about the material to those who are likely to disturb it.

Causes of Buildings＇ Abandonment in the Years 1960-1990

When a relatively new building is not being fully utilized, there must have existed, at one time, a change in its initial conditions. The aim of this research is to study the changes in the initial conditions which cause buildings to be underutilized and analyze whether the demolition was justified. Causes can be found in problems due to the building＇s management, as the owners make the main decisions concerning the buildings. Additionally problems are due to the location where the building is constructed because site conditions changes a lot in one generation. The use of the building can also be a cause of abandonment as the original use can end before the lifespan of the building. Architectural style can be dated as fashions and styles change rapidly. Finally, causes can be in the physical condition of the buildings： structure, construction, installations and adherence to current regulations. In this article, the authors provide guidelines demonstrating how buildings of a past generation which were initially considered obsolete, can be properly reused.

Seismic Damage Characteristics of the Wenchuan Great Earthquake on May 12,2008 and Suggestions for Disaster Prevention

The paper introduces the tectonic background, focal mechanism and distribution of aftershock of the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12,2008. The earthquake is considered to be the result of long-term interaction between the eastward movement of the Bayan Har Block and the Sichuan Basin. Most of the earthquake energy was released in an area （the seismic source body） 330kin long,52km wide and 20km deep over 100s. Energy release in the source body was extremely uneven, and strong ground motion in the epicenter area shows obvious asymmetrical character in the time and space scale. The high-intensity area is distributed along the source body, and the intensity distribution bears an obvious anomalous characteristic. The investigation results indicate that more than 90 percent of casualties caused by this earthquake were in the areas of intensity IX or above. Houses, schools and hospitals etc. suffered serious damage. Lifelines such as transportation, water conservation etc. also suffered significant damage. Besides, earthquake-triggered avalanches, landslides, mud-rock flows and so on were extremely serious. The tremendous earthquake disaster highlighted the deficiencies in disaster prevention and mitigation management, scientific earthquake research, technology and application of earthquake disaster prevention, and publicity of earthquake preparedness and disaster reduction.

Discussion on Construction Project Cost Composition and Its Management

That budget estimate exceeds estimate, budget exceeds budget estimate, and actual budget exceeds budget usually exists in the management of construction project cost, suggesting the cost management and control of construction project are not the management and control of product cost in a general sense. In terms of construction project, cost management and control is the core of the project and is implemented throughout all stages of the project, so it is complicated system engineering. In this paper, construction project cost composition and its management measures are mainly discussed.

A ubiquitous knowledgeable data representation model(UKRM) for three-dimensional geographic information systems(3D GIS)

In the face of complicated, diversified three-dimensional world, the existing 3D GIS data models suffer from certain issues such as data incompatibility, insufficiency in data representation and representation types, among others. It is often hard to meet the requirements of multiple application purposes(users) related to GIS spatial data management and data query and analysis, especially in the case of massive spatial objects. In this study, according to the habits of human thinking and recognition, discrete expressions(such as discrete curved surface(DCS), and discrete body(DB)) were integrated and two novel representation types(including function structure and mapping structure) were put forward. A flexible and extensible ubiquitous knowledgeable data representation model(UKRM) was then constructed, in which structurally heterogeneous multiple expressions(including boundary representation(B-rep), constructive solid geometry(CSG), functional/parameter representation, etc.) were normalized. GIS's ability in representing the massive, complicated and diversified 3D world was thus greatly enhanced. In addition, data reuse was realized, and the bridge linking static GIS to dynamic GIS was built up. Primary experimental results illustrated that UKRM was overwhelmingly superior to the current data models(e.g. IFC, City GML) in describing both regular and irregular spatial objects.
