With the addition of 2% A1-Ti-C master alloy, the grains transform to equiaxed crystal with a diameter of (110-a:17) ~tm. The results indicate that A14C3 and TiC particle cluster, rather than a single particle, plays an important role in the refining process. Compared with the simplex smooth nucleating substrate, concave regions on the particle cluster provide easier route for the transformation from liquid Mg atoms to stable nucleus. Nucleus with a small size can also reach the critical nucleation radius when they attach on the concave regions of the substrate. A14C3 and TiC particle clusters thus become more favorable nucleating substrate for a-Mg grains.展开更多

Firstly, an Au substrate was cycled in a deoxygenated aqueous solution containing 0.1 M HCI and 60 mM anatase TiO2 nanoparticles from -0.28 to +1.22 V vs Ag/AgCI at 500 mV/s with 25 scans. The durations at the cathodic and anodic vertexes are 10 and 5 s, respectively. After this process, Au-and TiO2-containing complexes were left in the solution. Then a Pt electrode immediately replaced the Au working electrode, and a cathodic overpotential of 0.6 V from the Open Circuit Potential (OCP) was applied under sonification to synthesize Au nanoparticles. Encouragingly, the prepared Au nanoparticles caped with visible light-responsible TiO2 nanoparticles are more active for the decomposition of formaldehyde than pure visible light-responsible TiO2 nanoparticles are in the same condition. After 5 days testing, the formaldehyde was decomposed ca. 35% in containing Au nanoparticles caped with visible light-responsible TiO2 nanoparticles, but the formaldehyde was decomposed only ca. 25% in containing pure visible light-responsible TiO2 nanoparticles.展开更多

In the wake of nanotechnology advancement, silver's efficacy to fight broad spectrum bacterial infections is further improved in the form of Ag nanoparticles (NPs). Recent studies have ascribed the broad spectrum antimicrobial properties of Ag NPs to dissociation of Ag* ions from the NPs, which may not be entirely applicable when the size of Ag NPs decreases to the sub-2 nm range [denoted Ag nanoclusters (NCs)]. In this paper we report that ultrasmall glutathione (GSH)-protected Ag^+-rich NCs (Ag^+-R NCs for short, with a predominance of Ag+ species in the NCs) have much higher antimicrobial activities towards both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria than the reference NC, GSH-Ag^+-R NCs. They have the same size and surface ligand, but with different oxidation states of the core silver. This interesting finding suggests that the undissociated Ag^+-R NCs armed with abundant Ag^+ ions on the surface are highly active in bacterial killing, which was not observed in the system of their larger counterpart, Ag NPs.展开更多

There are still many hurdles that limit the performance of individual NPs for these applications. The utilization of highly ordered NP ensembles opens a door to resolve these problems, as a result of their new or advanced collective properties. The assembled NPs show several advantages over individual NP-based systems, such as improved cell internalization and tumor targeting, enhanced multimodality imaging capability, superior combination therapy arising from synergistic effects, possible complete clearance from the whole body by degradation of assemblies into original small NP building blocks, and so on. In this review, we discuss the potential of utilizing assembled NP ensembles for cancer imaging and treatment by taking plasmonic vesicular assemblies of Au NPs as an example. We first summarize the recent developments in the self-assembly of plasmonic vesicular structures of NPs from amphiphilic polymer-tethered NP building blocks. We further review the utilization of plasmonic vesicles of NPs for cancer imaging (e.g. multi-photon induced luminescence, photothermal, and photoacoustic imaging), and cancer therapy (e.g., photothermal therapy, and chemotherapy). A large number of studies carried out over the past few years under a variety of experimental conditions and following different protocols have produced conflicting results, leading to divergent views about the actual safety of gold nanoparticles in human applications. This work is intended to provide an overview of the most recent experimental results and thereby summarize current state-of-the-art. Rather than presenting a comprehensive review of the available literature in this field, which would be impractically broad, we have selected representative examples of both in vivo and in vitro studies, which clearly demonstrate the need for urgent and rigorous standardization of experimental protocols. Despite their significant potential, the safety of gold nanoparticles is highly controversial at this time, and important concerns have been raised that need to be properly addressed. Factors such as shape, size, surface charge, coating, and surface functionalization are expected to influence the interactions of particles with biological systems to a different extent, resulting in different outcomes and influencing the potential of gold nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Moreover, despite continuous attempts to establish a correlation between structure of the particles and their interactions with biological systems, we are still far from elucidating the toxicological profile of gold nanoparticles in an indisputable manner. This review is intended to contribute towards this goal, offering a number of suggestions on how to achieve the systematization of data on the most relevant physico-chemical parameters, which govern and control the toxicity of ~old nanot^articles at cellular and whole-organism levels.展开更多
