METHODS: 33 constipated patients and 20 healthy volunteers were recruited for a 4-wk treatment of kiwi fruit twice daily. Response during wk 1-4 was defined as an increase in complete spontaneous bowl, motion (CSBM)≥ 1/wk. Secondary efficacy included response during wk 1-4, individual symptoms and scores of bowel habits and constipation. Responses were compared with the baseline run-in period. Colonic transit time and anorectal manometry were performed before and after treatment. RESULTS: Responder rate was 54.5% in the constipated group. The mean CSBM increased after treatment (2.2±2.6 vs 4.4± 4.6, P = 0.013). There was also improvement in the scores for bothersomeness of constipation (P = 0.02), and satisfaction of bowel habit (P = 0.001), and decreased in days of laxative used (P = 0.003). There was also improvement in transit time (P = 0.003) and rectal sensation (P 〈 0.05). However, there was no change in the bowel symptoms or anorectal physiology in the healthy subjects. CONCLUSION: Increasing dietary fiber intake is effective in relieving chronic constipation in Chinese population.展开更多

The air is favorable to the catalysis of dibasic ammonium phosphate (DAP), but not to those of ADP, PA, AP, and AS obviously. It is put forward that a peak’s shape character can be described with the ratio of height to half-height-width (H/W /2) of the peak on a differential thermo-gravimetric (DTG) curve. A flat cracking peak, presenting a more moderate dehydration reaction, has a smaller ratio and could lead to higher carbonization and activation yields. The experimental results prove this view. According to expectation, the order of catalysis is: DAP≥ADP>PA> APAS no catalyst.展开更多

Furthermore, cytofluorimetry and DAPI fluorescence staining were performed for cell cycle and apoptosis analysis. p53 gene expression level was detected with indirect immunofluorescence. We found that cisplatin (10 mM) treatment could block cell growth cycle at G1 and induced premature senescence. The premature senescence changes included high frequency of apoptosis, elevation of p53 expression, loss of membranous gap junctions and reduction of dye-transfer capacity. These changes were comparable to the changes of replicative senescence of human fibroblasts. It was also concluded that cisplatin could induce premature senescence concomitant with inhibition of gap junctions in the fibroblasts. Loss of functional gap junctions from the cell membrane may account for the reduced intercellular communication in the premature senescent fibroblasts. The cell system we used may provide a model useful for the study of the gap junction thus promoting agents against premature senescence.展开更多

The results show that: (1) the population growth rate was in the order of NSW〉Flack ASW〉Nakamula ASW〉Schmadz ASW〉Oshima ASW〉Subow ASW and was considerably higher in rice media than in beef extract media (apart from Subow ASW); (2) the maximum density of E. vannus in stationary phase in each treatment was ranked as Hack ASW〉Nakamula ASW〉Schmadz ASW〉NSW〉Oshima ASW〉Subow ASW, and was again higher in rice media than in beef extract media (except for Subow ASW); (3) the exponential and stationary phases were longer in rice media than in beef extract media; (4) strains of E. vannus that had been domesticated for 〉1 year in ASW grew significantly slower, with lower maximum density and longer stationary phase than those isolated and maintained in NSW. It was demonstrated that: (1) E. vannus may grow well in Flack, Nakamula and Schmads ASW compared with NSW (mainly in terms of growth rate); and (2) Oshima ASW is the preferred choice for stock cultures of E. vannus, but the ASWs Flack, Nakamula and Schmadz are preferred for mass culture. These findings suggest that these three ASWs are effective for the cultivation of marine protozoa for experimental studies on ecology, toxicology and molecular biology.展开更多

The mixtures were prepared with 0 wt%, 15 wt%, and 30 wt% of fly ash, at 0 vol.%, 0.5 vol.%, 1.0 vol.% and 1.5 vol.% of fiber, respectively. After being cured under the standard conditions for 7, 28, 90 and 365 d, the specimens of each mixture were tested to determine the corresponding compressive and flexural strengths. The pa- rameters such as the amounts of cement, fly ash replacement, sand, gravel, steel fiber, and the age of samples were selected as input variables, while the compressive and flexural strengths of the concrete were chosen as the output variables. The back propagation learning algorithm with three different variants, namely the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), scaled conjugate gradient (SCG) and Fletcher-Powell conjugate gradient (CGF) algorithms were used in the network so that the best approach can be found. The results obtained from the model and the experiments were compared, and it was found that the suitable algorithm is the LM algorithm. Furthermore, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was used to determine how importantly the experimental parameters affect the strength of these mixtures.展开更多

Ginsenoside Rg 1, a panaxatriol saponin, is one of the major active molecules from PNS. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of ginsenoside Rgl on renal fibrosis in rats with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). The rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: sham-operation (n=15), UUO (n=15) and UUO with ginsenoside Rgl treatment (n=15, 50 mg per kg body weight, intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected). The rats were sacrificed on Days 7 and 14 after the surgery. Histological examination demonstrated that ginsenoside Rgl significantly inhibited interstitial fibrosis including tubular injury as well as collagen deposition, u-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and E-cadherin are two markers of tubular epithelial-myofibroblast transition (TEMT). Interestingly, ginsenoside Rgl notably decreased α-SMA expression and simultaneously enhanced E-cadherin expression. The messenger RNA (mRNA) of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), a key mediator to regulate TEMT, in the obstructed kidney increased dramatically, but was found to decrease significantly after administration of ginsenoside Rg 1. Further study showed that ginsenoside Rgl considerably decreased the levels of both active TGF-β1 and phosphorylated Smad2 (pSmad2). Moreover, ginsenoside Rgl substantially suppressed the expression of thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), a cytokine which can promote the transcription of TGF-β1 mRNA and the activation of latent TGF-β1. These results suggest that ginsenoside Rgl inhibits renal interstitial fibrosis in rats with UUO. The mechanism might be partly related to the blocking of TEMT via suppressing the expression of TSP-1.展开更多

The fiber treatments were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR) and Scanning electron microscope(SEM). The kinetics of chromium bio-sorption was studied in batch presses under the effect of some physicochemical factors such as the nature of chelating agent(F@UR, F@TC, F@DCZ, and F@EDTA),adsorbent dose(2–10 g·L^(-1)), chromium initial concentration(100–500 mg·L^(-1)), solution pH(1–6), and batch temperature(20 ℃–50 ℃). This study resulted in an optimum adsorption at a chromium initial concentration of 100 mg·L^(-1), at pH 2, and at 20 ℃. The obtained results showed clearly that the treatment with chelating agent boosts the adsorptive capacity of A. sisalana fibers Cr(VI) 10.9 mg·g^(-1) to 58.6 mg·g^(-1). The modeling study showed that the adsorption kinetics obey the pseudo-second-order model, with an R2 in the range of 0.991 and 0.999. The bio-sorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model; the maximum uptake capacity of(F@N, F@UR,F@TC, F@DCZ, and F@EDTA) was found to be respectively, 12.3 mg·g^(-1), 25.33 mg·g^(-1), 28.73 mg·g^(-1),42.54 mg·g^(-1), and 61.45 mg·g^(-1). The determined adsorption thermodynamics parameters such as enthalpy, free energy, and entropy showed that the adsorption process is exothermic, spontaneous, and has a stable configuration.展开更多

Its microscopic and ultramicroscopic features are also well defined. Aim: The aim of this work was to study the involvement of catecholaminergic nerve fibers in the human skin neurofibromatosis. Bioptic fragments of the human skin have been harvested from healthy and diseased subjects. On these specimens the following analysis were performed: 1) light microscopic observation after colouring with hematoxyline-Eosine. 2) lmmunochemical staining for Protein Gene Product 9.5.3) Fluorescent staining for catecholaminergic nerve fibers. 4) Quantitative analysis of images by means of the Quantimet analyzer Leica. 5) Statistical analysis of the quantitative morphological data comparing the healthy with diseased subjects. Comparing the light microscopy images in normal and pathological subjects the authors can affirm that the skin neurofibromatosis induces a strong decrease of the nerve fibers cutted in small pieces and destroyed. Also the catecholaminergic nerve fibers are strongly reduced and destroyed. Quantitative analysis of images and statistical analysis of the morphological data confirm that neurofibromatosis induces strong changes of the skin nerve fibers. The authors' results confirm that the neurofibromatosis type 2 induces an almost total destruction of the skin nerve fibers.展开更多

In young people with cystic fibrosis (CF) the importance of exercise and daily PA is acknowledged by clinicians and their support teams, however, there is a lack of knowledge related to its prescription. CF is a recessive genetic disorder affecting the lung, pancreas and sweat glands. CF is the most common life shortening genetic disease in the Caucasian population for which there is no cure. In the UK, CF affects over 9000 people, with 4000 under 16 years of age. Only about half of the CF population can expect to live beyond 40 years of age. Besides drug therapies, rehabilitative exercise programmes form an important component of treatment and long term exercise programmes are considered positive treatment strategies, but all lack any detailed prescriptive information. Several reviews and editorials have highlighted the lack of evidence based research in PA and exercise training in young people with CF; but advocate a greater need for understanding the role of exercise in therapeutic interventions. The purpose of this review is to update the reader on the current recommendations and evidence in PA and exercise training for young people with CE These developments have extended our understanding of PA and exercise training in children and adolescents with CF, and its implementation in the management of this chronic disease.展开更多

文摘Total saponins of Panax notoginseng (PNS) have been shown to ameliorate renal interstitial fibrosis. Ginsenoside Rg 1, a panaxatriol saponin, is one of the major active molecules from PNS. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of ginsenoside Rgl on renal fibrosis in rats with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). The mechanism might be partly related to the blocking of TEMT via suppressing the expression of TSP-1.
文摘This review discusses atrial fibrillation according to the guidelines of Brazilian Society of Cardiac Arrhythmias and the Brazilian Cardiogeriatrics Guidelines. We stress the thromboembolic burden of atrial fibrillation and discuss how to prevent it as well as the best way to conduct cases of atrial fibrillatios in the elderly, reverting the arrhythmia to sinus rhythm, or the option of heart rate control. The new methods to treat atrial fibrillation, such as radiofrequency ablation, new oral direct thrombin inhibitors and Xa factor inhibitors, as well as new antiarrhythmic drugs, are depicted.
文摘The current work is focused on the study of the bio-sorption of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution using sisal natural fiber(Agave sisalana) treated by various chelating agents(ligands) such as urea(UR),thiocarbamide(TC), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA), and diphenyl carbazide(DCZ). The determined adsorption thermodynamics parameters such as enthalpy, free energy, and entropy showed that the adsorption process is exothermic, spontaneous, and has a stable configuration.

文摘Introduction:Desmoid-type fibromatosis(DF)is a fibrous tumor characterized by low-grade malignant and easy invasive growth and high recurrence.High-intensity focused ultrasound(HIFU)therapy has been identified as a novel non-invasive approach for DF treatment;however, the ultrasonic energy generated by HIFU can cause skin heat injury.Case:A 31-year-old female patient with signs and symptoms of DF received treatment in our institution. The patient had undergone HIFU treatment six times from April 27,2018,to August 21,2019.After HIFU therapy for the third time, she had a third-degree skin burn showing as orange peel-like change and spent three months to promote the recovery of the skin lesions. An intermittent ice-cooling strategy was used to avoid skin damage during the fourth HIFU treatment. This patient did not have any apparent skin injury during the last three HIFU therapy and acquired satisfactory anti-tumor therapeutic effect. Conclusions:There are differences in the thermal selectivity of tumor tissues, which leads to different critical thermal injury temperature values that the tissue can tolerate.Ice-cooling can lower skin tissue temperature and reduce the thermal damage caused by HIFU treatment.
文摘Neurofibromatosis type 2 is a well known disease of the human skin. The authors' results confirm that the neurofibromatosis type 2 induces an almost total destruction of the skin nerve fibers.

文摘Objective:This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of the disease journey and patients'care needs with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF).Methods:Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sampling of IPF patients admitted to the department of respiratory medicine in a tertiary hospital in Beijing.Interview data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. In the end,16 patients were interviewed. Results:Four themes emerged from the qualitative data included the long and confusing journey to reach a diagnosis, living with the disease, understanding the disease and treatment and desire for continuity of care.A series of subthemes were also identified, including uncertainty of diagnosis, delaying the process, living with physical symptoms, living with emotional distress, loss of independence, uncertainty with the prognosis, questioning the cause of the disease, concerning the side effects of treatments, lacking continuity of care, and wanting a better quality ofhealthcare in community hospitals. Conclusions:Based on the findings, there is an urgent need to improve the care delivery to this vulnerable population in China. To meet their health needs,it is of paramount importance to develop effective education programs for health professionals and IPF patients and improve care models of healthcare systems, especially in remote areas,to enhance care continuity in the communities.
文摘Despite the acceptance of physical activity (PA) being integral to a young person's health, children with disability often exhibit low levels of PA. The purpose of this review is to update the reader on the current recommendations and evidence in PA and exercise training for young people with CE These developments have extended our understanding of PA and exercise training in children and adolescents with CF, and its implementation in the management of this chronic disease.
