A leading car with a pre-specilied speed profile was used to test the above model. The results show that this model is to some extent deficient in performing the process aforementioned. Modifications of the model to overcome these deficiencies were demonstrated anda modified car-following model was proposed accordingly. Furthermore, the delay time of car motion of the new model were studied.展开更多

With the rapid development of urbanization and constant advancement of suburbanization, the middle class has increasingly come to influence city traffic. Research into middle-class commuting activities thus has practical significance for improving traffic congestion and reducing the commuting burden in metropolitan cities. Based on a dataset formed by 816 completed surveys, this paper analyzes the commuting mode, time and distance of middle-class residents in Guangzhou City using the descriptive statistical method. The results indicate that private cars are the main commuting mode, followed by public transport. Meanwhile, middle-class residents mainly undertake medium-short time and medium-short distance commuting. The study subsequently uses multilevel logistic regression and multiple linear regression models to analyze the factors that influence commuting mode choice, time and distance. The gender, age, number of family cars, housing source and jobs-housing balance are the most important factors influencing commuting mode choice; housing, population density, jobs-housing balance and commuting mode significantly affect commuting time; and transport accessibility, jobs-housing balance and commuting mode are the notable factors affecting commuting distance. Finally, this paper analyzes what is affecting the commuting activities of middle-class residents and determines the differences in commuting activity characteristics and influence factors between middle-class and ordinary residents. Policy suggestions to improve urban planning and urban management are also proposed.展开更多

It is also important that the time required for transportation should be minimum. In this paper a method has been proposed for the minimization of transportation costs. Supply and transportation costs per unit of the quantities are also determined. The present study was carried out to evaluate the quality of gravel to know its suitability for aggregate (raw material for concrete and road). The samples of gravel were analyzed for petrographic, physical, mechanical and chemical properties. Samples were categorized as quartzite group and carbonate group according to ASTM standard 295. Among these, samples of quartzite group were found dominant. The petrography examination of gravels which was carried out constituted of opal, tridymite, chalcedony, crystobalite and alkali carbonates rocks. Those minerals react with alkalis in cement leading to expansion and cracking of concrete. Other components such as sulfides, sulfates, halites, iron oxides, clay minerals and anhydrites are examined, which might be present as coating and impurities. The present study indicated that all samples are suitable for concrete making and obtain the optimum solution for transporting these materials from quarries to cities with minimum cost according to Egyptian Code.展开更多
