Culture plays a very important role in language teaching. A deep study of the relationship between language and culture is not only necessary but also urgent in language teaching and learning. The paper briefly points...Culture plays a very important role in language teaching. A deep study of the relationship between language and culture is not only necessary but also urgent in language teaching and learning. The paper briefly points out that in order to make teaching more effective, teachers should not only teach the language itself, but also teach the culture in the language while teaching the foreign language. It analyzes the differences of language customs reflecting in different cultures among different languages （between European languages such as English, Russian and Asian languages such as Kazakh, Chinese）. The analysis of diversity of different social cultures and different language customs of commtmication shows that the culture has a great influence upon the language. It includes the next components： （1） diversity of different geographies, natural environment, and customs, （2） differences of the history, religion, and belief, and （3） diversity of different thoughts of understanding objectivities. Further suggestions concerning how to use culture factors in the teaching procedure are also introduced in detail, such as： （1） the teacher＇s role; （2） the way of explanation, （3） the way of contrast; and （4） the way of practice. In order to conduct foreign language teaching well, teachers must take up the teaching of culture and the teaching of language at the same time. As long as the emphasis is laid both linguistic skills and communicative competence, the goals of language teaching will be achieved satisfactorily.展开更多
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University （APU） in Beppu city, Japan has a large body of students from well over 90 countries, especially from the Asia Pacific region, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese...Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University （APU） in Beppu city, Japan has a large body of students from well over 90 countries, especially from the Asia Pacific region, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Indonesian students. To improve analytical thinking skills among college students, a course on ＂bioethics＂ was introduced and offered in two consecutive semesters to undergraduate students for which 245 students registered at each semester. The course was taught in the form of 14 lecture and discussion sessions, each for 95 minutes based on the content of A Cross-Cultural Introduction to Bioethics （2006） edited by Darryl Macer, and reviewed a wide variety of ethical and bioethical issues. In the next semester, the students received a similar teaching content that was rearranged to reflect the 15 universal principles of bioethics and human rights covered in the Bioethics Core Curriculum （2008）. Case studies were also added to each unit of the Core Curriculum with the support of the UNESCO＇s Asia Pacific Regional Office, Bangkok （Case Studies for Bioethics 2010）. To evaluate the results of teaching and to compare the achieved objectives between the two groups of students, a short questionnaire was given to all students who finished the course and took up the final written examination. In the whole, 454 students （225 in group I and 229 in group 2） completed the course and took the final examination and 427 （218 in group 1 and 209 in group 2） responded to the questionnaire which inquired into their interest in the discussion of bioethical issues： why they believed they were important, and what they had learned through them. The results of the questionnaire have been examined and compared to evaluate the success of ＂bioethics＂ in stimulating the interest and thinking ability of the students and enriching their experience of a cross-cultural discussion over bioethical issues using universal principles as general guidance. The result of this examination was so impressive that from 2011 bioethics has been formalized into the reformed curriculum of our international school.展开更多

Nowadays, language education has become increasingly focusing on the potential roles that portfolios play in language learning and teaching. However, most of the literature review tackled the implementation issues of ...Nowadays, language education has become increasingly focusing on the potential roles that portfolios play in language learning and teaching. However, most of the literature review tackled the implementation issues of portfolios in the language classroom and lacked of information about the ELP （European Language Portfolio） Project. In Europe, the CE （Council of Europe） promoted a series of projects for the coming of lifelong learning era. Among these projects, the CEFR （Common European Framework of Reference） and ELP projects, are two most prominent language projects in facilitating lifelong learning language. As a matter of fact, the language scholars in Taiwan are much familiar with CEFR than ELP. It is because that Taiwan Residents Ministry of Education used the CEFR as a reference framework of English proficient assessment in Taiwan. Howev experience of language learning that is founded on the principles of enhancing er, life the ELP Project provides an long learning, flexibility, and learner autonomy. This research includes two stages. During the first stage, this research aims to incorporate ELP to construct the WLP （Web-Based Language Portfolio） in Taiwan. The second stage research used the action research to examine the effects and challenges faced in the authentic Taiwan Residents EFL settings. Three teachers and 220 students participated in this research and practiced this WLP constructed from the first stage research.
