The aim of this paper is to elaborate urban competitiveness. First, definition of competitiveness is discussed in detail and then the differences of competitiveness of nations and enterprises are presented. In Section 2, urban competitiveness is defined. Since the assessment of urban competitiveness is the focus of many studies, Section 3 elaborates four models or frameworks for assessing urbancompetitiveness. Last, but by no means the least, Chengdu has been discussed as a case on how to improve urban competitiveness. Three suggestions are put forward, which are clustering strategy, more efficient governance and urban marketing campaigns respectively. 展开更多

To explore the problems of dynamic change in production demand and operating contradiction in production process, a new extension theory-based production operation method is proposed. The core is the demand requisition, contradiction resolution and operation classification. For the demand requisition, the deep and comprehensive demand elements are collected by the conjugating analysis. For the contradiction resolution, the conflict between the demand and operating elements are solved by the extension reasoning, extension transformation and consistency judgment. For the operating classification, the operating importance among the operating elements is calculated by the extension clustering so as to guide the production operation and ensure the production safety. Through the actual application in the cascade reaction process of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) of a chemical plant, cases study and comparison show that the proposed extension theory-based production operation method is significantly better than the traditional experience-based operation method in actual production process, which exploits a new way to the research on the production operating methods for industrial process. 展开更多

In the context of new risks and threats associated to nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) attacks, and given the shortcomings of certain analytical methods such as principal component analysis (PCA), a neural network approach seems to be more accurate. PCA consists in projecting the spectrum of a gas collected from a remote sensing system in, firstly, a three-dimensional space, then in a two-dimensional one using a model of Multi-Layer Perceptron based neural network. It adopts during the learning process, the back propagation algorithm of the gradient, in which the mean square error output is continuously calculated and compared to the input until it reaches a minimal threshold value. This aims to correct the synaptic weights of the network. So, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) tends to be more efficient in the classification process. This paper emphasizes the contribution of the ANN method in the spectral data processing, classification and identification and in addition, its fast convergence during the back propagation of the gradient. 展开更多

The Functional Approach to the Teaching of Translation: A Case Study on Beiying and Its English Translations

This paper reports the attempt to apply the functional approach to the translation teaching practice that guides students in their study of Chinese essays and their English translations. The famed modern Chinese essay Belying and its three English translations were taken for case study from the perspective of Experiential Function in Systemic Functional Linguistics. A process type analysis of Beiying and its English translations was conducted, including analysis of texts, sample processes, distributions of process types in Beiying and analyses of similarities and differences in the distributions. Results are as follows: 1) The similarities between English and Chinese texts lie in the experiential world, which makes translation possible. The process types in the essay text are directly related to genre, and the material process predominates among the process types in essay texts. 2) The differences are that the percentage of the material process in the ST is higher than that in the three English translations, and this shows the characteristics of verb-prominence in Chinese and nominalization in English. 3) Cultural differences in translation are the root-cause of linguistic differences. These results from the case of practicing the functional approach to the teaching of translation can help students gain understanding of English translations of Beiying and can provide some inspiration for the teaching of Chinese-English essay translation and the related studies. 展开更多
