The results showed that with transplanting periods of March 5-March 15, and planting space of 120 cmx(50-60) cm, agronomic and economic characters of tobaccos showed insignificant differences. Specifically, plant height was growing upon the number of left leaf and fertilizer amount; tobacco yield and output value kept increasing upon fertilizer, and both reached maximums with pure N at 195 kg/hm^2, showing significant differences with the treatment of pure N at 135 kg/hm^2; the number of left leaf had the least effects on agronomic and economic characters of tobaccos. The research indicated that highly-qualified HQ No.1 can be produced, given that tobaccos are transplanted during March 10-March 15, planting density of 15 000-16 500 seedlings/hm^2, the number of left leaves of 22-24 leaves per seedling, and pure N of 150-165 kg/hm^2 in Hengyang.展开更多

Such prostheses were originally targeted for patients suff ering from blindness through retinitis pigmentosa(RP). However, in late July of this year, for the first time a patient was given a retinal implant in order to treat dry agerelated macular degeneration. Retinal implants are suitable solutions for diseases that attack photoreceptors but spare most of the remaining retinal neurons. For eye diseases that result in loss of retinal output, implants that interface with more central structures in the visual system are needed. The standard site for central visual prostheses under development is the visual cortex. This perspective discusses the technical and socioeconomic challenges faced by visual prostheses.展开更多

Changes in the sectors of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals and the current development of technology forces the steel mills increased productivity, reduce production costs while ensuring to obtain a product with the required properties and to improve the competitiveness of enterprises in the global market. Currently, the most popular in meeting these requirements, enjoys a method of integration which combines individual operations into one integrated whole. The use of modem, perfectly designed, fully automated design of mechanical, hydraulic and measurement allowed us to achieve an innovative line of production. This article presents the general characteristics of the steel industry and a description of the latest integrated technology currently used in foundries and rolling mills. It also presents examples of the use of integrated technologies in metallurgy and the effects of economic, environmental and quality resulting from their use on an industrial scale.展开更多

As the Editors-in-Chief of En- gineering, first of all, we wish to thank all the scholars at home and abroad for their eager responses and full support, and all those who have provided encouragement and contributions toward the emergence of this journal. Looking back over the history of human civilization, hu- man survival is closely related to the development of social productive forces, which come from engineering science and technology (EST). Along with today's rapid economic and social development, we face common threats from global problems such as food safety, resource shortages, energy cri- ses, environmental pollution, climate change, network attacks, population expansion, poverty, the prevalence of disease, and economic crises. Therefore, EST research that addresses these major issues of economic development appears to be par- ticularly important. At present, a new scientific and technical revolution, including wide spread industrial transformation, is flowing together with new developments in human society. Historically, we know that progress and innovation in EST is a crucial engine for promotin~ progress in human society.展开更多

Crisis is defined here as a decline in financial performance in the given sector, which leads to the decline of its constituent firms and corporations on the world economic scene. The World Economic Center Index(WECI) has been created in order to rank cities based on the value of their resident corporations by sector and show their level of stability upon the removal of the most important sector. This provides information on the potential of each analyzed city as well as on its advanced features or area of specialization. Research has shown that nearly half the World Economic Centers are dominated by the financial and materials sectors of the economy. Different sectors dominate different regions of the world. For example, consumer staples and materials were dominant in North America, while information technology and financials were dominant in Europe. In Asia, several sectors tend to dominate the economy. Research has shown that the ability of a principal economic sector to resist economic crisis largely depends on the strength of the command and control function of a city. Finally, a high globalization level of a city is a key determinant of its susceptibility to economic crisis.展开更多

This study, using official structural business statistics from Ireland, suggests that in fact family businesses may account for a considerably smaller share of the business economy, something closer to 46%. This paper attempts to explain how such a discrepancy can arise. Using the Annual Services Inquiry compiled by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) as the anchor dataset, micro data are linked to the e-Commerce and ICT survey, Community Innovation Survey and VAT registrations datasets in order to determine whether labour productivity in Family Businesses (FBs) is significantly different to that of Non-Family Businesses (NFBs) and if Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) or innovation has an impact. The paper also highlights the significant impact that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) makes to the Irish economy. This analysis is particularly relevant for a small open economy like Ireland where 31% of traded services GVA and 15% of employment is generated by multinational enterprises.展开更多

Take people, vehicles and the environment as the main line and points out the promoting role of the relevant state departments, policy, research institutions and transportation infrastructure in the social cost for the entire transportation system security. Finally, about the security of car crash in low speed on urban roads, the paper gives some recommendations as for private costs, technology costs and social costs factor.展开更多

It is a profound transformation of techno-economic paradigms, imbedded in the technology, management, and institutional systems. As this revolution deepens, it is likely that manufacturing and the manufacturing sector would acquire new definitions. In addition, the resource foundation and factor structure, which are central to the competitiveness of a nation and an enterprise, would perhaps be reconfigured, hence rewriting the landscape of global industrial competition. Under this scenario, the "smiling curve '" which used to portray the economic features of the value chain, may change into a "silence curve" or even "sadness curve ". The catching- up pathway of latecomer countries, as predicted by the traditional 'flying geese model", is likely to be blocked, solidifying the division of"core and periphery countries" which is unfavorable to developing countries. Industrial competition between countries would move from competition between enterprises and supply chains to competition in industrial ecosystems, matdng system adaptability and dynamics the key to long-term industrial competitiveness. As an effort to embrace the "Third Industrial Revolution" and meet the challenges brought by "multi-facets competition" with developed industrial nations in various links of value chain, in the future China should make appropriate adjustments in its strategies for economic transition and upgrading, global competition, technological innovation, industrial development and information technology.展开更多
