This paper presents an approach for the identification of the characteristics of the structural system resisting to horizontal loads which enables to satisfy given seismic performance objectives. This is achieved by considering a total conceptual separation between the structural systems resisting to vertical and horizontal loads. The proposed approach is first briefly developed in general within a Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD) framework and then fully applied to the case study of a five-storey steel building structure. It is composed of three basic steps: (1) identification of the fundamental characteristics which should be possessed by the horizontal resisting system to satisfy a multiplicity of performance objectives, (2) development of a peculiar horizontal resisting system composed of "crescent shaped braces" which are specifically calibrated to satisfy given performance objectives, (3) verification, by means of appropriate time-history analyses, of the seismic performances achieved. In detail, the horizontal resisting system is calibrated to satisfy a multiplicity of performance objectives through the identification of an "objectives curve", in the Force-Displacement diagram, of the mechanical characteristics of the structure. The calibration is obtained by methods/tools borrowed either from Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) or Force-Based Design (FBD), depending on the specific performance objective to be imposed. The applicative example has been carried out with reference to three performance objectives and has led to the identification of a horizontal resisting system composed of special bracing elements capable of realizing a sort of properly-calibrated seismic isolation called crescent-shaped braces. The results obtained through non-linear dynamic analyses have shown that the proposed approach leads to the congruity between the imposed and the achieved seismic performances.展开更多

We obtain a11 possible bifurcations of phase portraits of the system in different regions of the parametric space. Then we show the sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of traveling wave solutions including solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions, eompactions and kink-like and antikink-like wave solutions. Moreover, the expressions of solitary wave solutions and periodic wave solutions are implicitly given, while the expressions of kink-like and antikink-like wave solutions are explicitly shown. The dynamics of these new traveling wave solutions will greatly enrich the previews results and further help us understand the physical structures and analyze the propagation of the nonlinear wave.展开更多

Moreover, the Logistic time series changing from period-doubling bifurcation to chaos is tested first using this method. Results indicate that it can distinguish inherent dynamics of time series and can detect mutations. Considering that cracks in the concrete dam constitute an open, dissipative and complex nonlinear dynamical system, a typical crack on the downstream face of a concrete gravity arch dam is analyzed with the proposed method. Two distinct mutations are discovered to indicate that the abnormality diagnosis of cracks in the concrete dam is achieved dynamically through this method. Furthermore, because it can be directly utilized in the measured crack opening displacement series to complete abnormality diagnosis, it has a good prospect for practical applications.展开更多

With the prerequisite that all the states of the system are available, the proposed controller requires no comprehensive information about structural nonlinearity of the wing section. Furthermore, the proposed control approach requires no human intervention of designing goal dynamics and formulating control input function, which is difficult to be realized by the typical neural-network-based control following an inverse control scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed controller can stabilize the aeroelastic system with different nonlinearities.展开更多

Firstly, this structure must be closed to the reachability operation which means that reachable states from states expressed by this structure can be presented by it too. Secondly, the operation of finding reachable states with this structure should take as less computation as possible. To this end, a constraint system called rectangular zone is formalized, which is a conjunction of fixed amount of inequalities that compare fixed types of linear expressions with two variables to rational numbers. It is proved that the rectangular zone is closed to those reachability operations-intersection, elapsing of time and edge transition. Since the number of inequalities and the linear expression of each inequality is fixed in rectangular zones, so to obtain reachable rectangular zones, it just needs to change the rational numbers to which these linear expressions need to compare. To represent rectangular zones and unions of rectangular zones, a data structure called three dimensional constraint matrix(TDCM) and a BDD-like structure rectangular hybrid diagram(RHD) are introduced.展开更多

There are two parts of difference between the original system and equivalent system: one is caused by the difference between the means of original and equivalent stochastic structure; and another is caused by the difference between the original and equivalent stochastic structure which has the relation with stochastic variables. Statistical characteristics of equivalent stochastic structure can be obtained in accordance with mean square criterion, so nonlinear stochastic structure is transformed into linear stochastic structure. In order to attain that objective, the compound response spectrum of linear stochastic structure under stationary random excitation which is used in the solution is derived in the case of the mutual independence between stochastic excitation and stochastic structure. Finally, the example shows the accuracy and validity of the proposed method.展开更多
