Recent tsunamis have resulted in extensive damage of coastal structures. Such scenarios are the result of the action of long waves on structures. In this paper, the efficiency of vegetation as a buffer system in attenuating the incident ocean waves was studied through a well controlled experimental program. The study focused on the measurement of forces resulting from cnoidal waves on a model building mounted over a slope in the presence and absence of vegetation. The vegetative parameters, along with the width of the green belt, its position from the reference line, the diameter of the individual stems as well as the spacing between them, and their rigidity are varied so as to obtain a holistic view of the wave-vegetation interaction problem. The effect of vegetation on variations of dimensional forces with a Keulegan-Carpenter number (KC) was discussed in this paper. It has been shown that when vegetal patches are present in front of structure, the forces could be limited to within F*≤I, by a percentile of 92%, 90%, 55%, and 96%, respectively for gap ratios of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5. The force is at its maximum for the gap ratio of 1.0 and beyond which the forces start to diminish.展开更多

From the observational analyses, this sea fog event is a typical advection cooling case. Sea surface temperature(SST) and specific humidity(SH) show strong gradients from south to north, in which warm water is located in the south and consequently, moisture is larger in the south than in the north due to evaporation processes. After fog formation, evaporation process provides more moisture into the air and further contributes to fog evolution. The sea fog event was reproduced by the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System(RAMS) reasonably. The roles of important physical processes such as radiation, turbulence as well as atmospheric stratification in sea fog's structure and its formation mechanisms were analyzed using the model results. The roles of long wave radiation cooling, turbulence as well as atmospheric stratification were analyzed based on the modeling results. It is found that the long wave radiative cooling at the fog top plays an important role in cooling down the fog layer through turbulence mixing. The fog top cooling can overpower warming from the surface. Sea fog develops upward with the aid of turbulence. The buoyancy term, i.e., the unstable layer, contributes to the generation of TKE in the fog region. However, the temperature inversion layer prevents fog from growing upward.展开更多

Block ramps provide a semi-natural and aesthetically pleasing solution to certain river engineering problems in mountain streams. When constructing block ramps, one can use the dissipative behaviour of large macroroughness elements randomly placed on the river bed to enhance fish migration in an upstream direction thus, in this sense, meeting the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive. Block ramps are often designed and constructed to replace damaged drop hydraulic structures in the channels of mountain streams. This paper investigates the resilience of a particular block ramp placed in the Krzczonówka stream(Polish Carpathians) in terms of the engineering design function and its durability against damaging. A hydrodynamic analysis of a block ramp is presented before and after a flood event that changed the configuration of the blocks. The seminatural unstructured hydraulic structure was built on the Krzczonowka stream to protect gas pipes which are located beneath it. As a result of several floods, the boulder block chute described in this paper was damaged, and some boulders were dislodged and transported downstream. Our post-flood investigations of bathymetry and velocity revealed that even damaged boulder blocks, removed from the chute and displaced downstream of the structure, still provide significant energy dissipation of the flowing water. The novel of our paper is for the first time showing very detailed analysis of unstructured block ramp hydrodynamics parameters done in the field. Also the novel finding of our investigations shows that before and after the flood event the unstructured block ramp structure, is still fish friendly in terms of hydrodynamics.展开更多

This paper examines the postcolonial elements utilized by the Anglo-Jordanian novelist Fadia Faqir in her novel Pillars of Salt. It discusses the novel's themes and techniques associated with postcolonialism as a literary theory and as a critical approach. Being a postcolonial text, the novel shows the writer's attempt at writing back in response to the colonial past with its power structures and social hierarchies. Thematically, the novel is analyzed with special reference to such topics as the subaltern, Anglo-Jordanian ties, language, othemess, and identity. The paper also traces the continuity of postcolonial discourse in Faqir's novel and gives a short survey of the historical events that provide the background to the main events in this essentially postcolonial work.展开更多

文摘Spike neural networks are inspired by animal brains, and outperform traditional neural networks on complicated tasks. However, spike neural networks are usually used on a large scale, and they cannot be computed on commercial,off-the-shelf computers.A parallel architecture is proposed and developed for discrete-event simulations of spike neural networks.Furthermore, mechanisms for both parallelism degree estimation and dynamic load balance are emphasized with theoretical and computational analysis.Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed parallelized spike neural network system and its corresponding support components.

文摘In this paper,we calculated the spatial local-averaged velocity strains along the streamwise direction at four spatial scales according to the concept of spatial local-averaged velocity structure function by using the three-dimensional three-component database of time series of velocity vector field in the turbulent boundary layer measured by tomographic time-resolved particle image velocimetry. An improved quadrant splitting method, based on the spatial local-averaged velocity strains together with a new conditional sampling phase average technique, was introduced as a criterion to detect the coherent structure topology.Furthermore,we used them to detect and extract the spatial topologies of fluctuating velocity and fluctuating vorticity whose center is a strong second-quadrant event(Q2) or a fourth-quadrant event(Q4).Results illustrate that a closer similarity of the multi-scale coherent structures is present in the wall-normal direction, compared to the one in the other two directions. The relationship among such topological coherent structures and Reynolds stress bursting events,as well as the fluctuating vorticity was discussed. When other burst events are surveyed(the first-quadrant event Q1 and the third-quadrant event Q3),a fascinating bursting period circularly occurs:Q4-S-Q2-Q3-Q2-Q1-Q4-S-Q2-Q3-Q2-Q1 in the center of such topological structures along the streamwise direction. In addition, the probability of the Q2 bursting event occurrence is slightly higher than that of the Q4 event occurrence. The spatial instable singularity that almost simultaneously appears together with typical Q2 or Q4 events has been observed, which is the main character of the mutual induction mechanism and vortex auto-generation mechanism explaining how the turbulence is produced and maintained.
