METHODS: Thirty Wistar-Albino rats were divided into two groups. Honey with 10% dilution in the study group and 0.9% saline (NaCI) in the control group were injected into the common bile ducts of rats through a 3-mm duodenotomy. The animals were sacrificed 6 mo alter the procedure. Histopathological, biochemical, and radiological examinations were performed for evaluation of side effects. RESULTS: At the end of the sixth month, liver function tests were found to be normal in both groups. The tissue samples of liver and ductus choledochus of the honey group showed no histomorphologic difference from the control group. No stricture on the biliary tree was detected on the retrograde cholangiograms. CONCLUSION: According to these results, we concluded that 10% diluted honey could be used as scolicidal agent safely in the presence of biliary-cystic communication.展开更多

Colonoscopy has the significant advantage that polyps can be removed during the same procedure. Occasionally, colonoscopy can also reveal unexpected findings, including parasitic infections, even in asymptomatic patients. Tapeworms or cestodes are hermaphroditic parasites, which can live for considerable periods of time in the human gastrointestinal tract. Fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium species) are endemic in various parts of the world, the commonest species being Diphyllobothrium latum. Humans are the main definitive host for D. Latum and the majority of individuals harbouring the parasite are asymptomatic, while 40% of infected individuals may have low vitamin B12 levels. We describe a case of D. latum infection found on routine colonoscopic screening for colorectal cancer in an asymptomatic patient, which was successfully treated with praziquantel. The infection likely arose following raw fish (sushi) consumption.展开更多

Methods Echinococcus multilocularis protoscolex mRNA was extracted using a Quickprep MicromRNA purification kit based on combining of the disruptive and protective properties of guanidinium thiocyanate (GTC) with the speed and selectivity of oligo (dT)-cellulose chromatography in a spum-column with some modification. Purified mRNA (1.8 μg) was submitted to reverse transcription using random hexamers [pd(N6)]. The double-strand blunt-ended cDNAs were ligated with an EcoRI/NotI adaptor to form a cohesive EcoRI end. Subsequently the synthesized cDNA was inserted into vector λgt11 EcoRI arms. After being packaged in vitro, λgt11 was put to an infectious bacteria Echinococcus coli (E.coli) strain Y1090; the recombinants were screened by color selection. PCR amplification was performed to evaluate the size of insertion DNA fragments. Results The recombinant ratio was nearly 100% and approximately 1×106 clones could be derived from this λgt11 cDNA library. PCR results indicated that the insertion DNAs were about 1.48 kb. Conclusions A λgt11 cDNA expression library consisting of a million recombinant clones has been constructed from Echinococcus multicularis protoscolex mRNA. Further studies on this library are deserved.展开更多
