Motivating is the most creative phase of the Production-Oriented Approach(POA),making it different from other teaching approaches from the outset.This study aims to introduce the theory of motivating and its applicati...Motivating is the most creative phase of the Production-Oriented Approach(POA),making it different from other teaching approaches from the outset.This study aims to introduce the theory of motivating and its application to College English teaching practice by adopting dialectal research(DR).First,it gives an overall introduction to motivating,including its function,steps,and categories.Then it demonstrates two rounds of motivating practice in teaching College English by using the POA-based textbook iEnglish.The first round of motivating practice mainly focuses on how to follow the three steps of motivating in a specific case,namely,the teacher providing scenarios,the students trying out the productive activity,and the teacher explaining the productive objectives.The second round attempts to apply the criteria of motivating effectiveness to practice,namely,authentic communication,cognitive challenges and appropriate productive objectives.Furthermore,the teaching effectiveness of the motivating practice is appraised by both the teacher’s and students’retrospective evaluations.Finally,some suggestions for motivating design and future research are proposed.展开更多

The study aims to synthesize and examine ext...Extensive reading has long been applied in the English as a foreign language classroom in China,but the fundamental theories and practical instruction are not satisfactory. The study aims to synthesize and examine extensive reading studies over the past fifty years(1962-2019) from a holistic perspective. By performing a qualitative meta-analysis, a total of 81 articles published in widely accepted journals were carefully coded and analyzed. Three latent problems emerged,including that 1) most extensive reading researchers misunderstand the inherent characteristic of extensive reading(i. e., pleasure reading) and less frequently follow the principles of extensive reading instruction;2) there are methodological weaknesses in empirical research designs, and;3)research scope is limited regarding participants and methodology. Suggestions for extensive reading research and instruction are included.展开更多

The goal of the study is to ...This paper is a two-year empirical investigation of cultivating students' autonomous learning capacity in College English teaching at Shanxi University of Finance and Economics (SUFE). The goal of the study is to optimize students' language learning and to find a new direction of teaching innovation. The paper analyzes the current teaching context and presents a critical review of the literature on learner autonomy. The author explores understanding of learner autonomy in Chinese context and produces an autonomous learning model in the experimental study. The paper presents some strategies for fostering autonomy such as instructing students how to learn, level-based teaching and collaborative learning. It was found that only by encouraging greater learner autonomy can students raise their English learning effectiveness.展开更多

Then, based on the results from the assessments, a Fuzzy Comprehensive Grading Approach is adopted in calculating students' final grade. The Approach is based on the fuzzy set theory of fuzzy mathematics, and it considers diverse factors and assigns proper weight to different factors in grading, using fuzzy matrix operation in calculating students' grades; therefore, it is comprehensive and reliable, and can avoid the influence of odd scores and give a truer and more balanced measurement of students' English ability.展开更多

This study proposes a framework of CEAPNA （comprehensive EAP needs analysis）, and illustrates how the framework helps to shape learning-centered EAP pedagogy. The CEAPNA survey covered 452 undergraduates and 83 faculty members from science and engineering departments, and was triangulated with the researchers＇ retrospection of seven years of pedagogical practice. Major findings in the study suggest multiple sources as a must in a comprehensive and accurate analysis of EAP learner needs. In the meantime, the specificity of learner needs addresses EAP practitioners＇ endeavors to specify these needs in various dimensions, so as to negotiate a satisfactory balance between language, cognition and affect in EAP pedagogy. Due to realistic constraints in specifying and balancing the needs, this paper wishes to oblige with a conceptual interpretation as well as a pedagogical retrospection.展开更多
