With declines in the values of PSII photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), PSII actual quantum yield (Phi(PSII)), photochemical quenching (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) during dehydration, zeaxanthin significantly increased in control Boea leaves under very weak light condition, while no zeaxanthin accumulation was detected in Boea leaves treated with dithiothreitol (DTT) and Boea leaves in the dark, and after 3 d rehydration, the parameters Fv/Fm, Phi(PSII), qP and NPQ showed full recovery in control Boea leaves under very weak light condition, but the parameters only underwent partial recovery in Boea leaves treated with DTT and Boea leaves in the dark, suggesting that the recovery of photosystem II (PSII) photochemical activities in Boea leaves was obviously affected by treatments with DTT and darkness, therefore, zeaxanthin may play an important protective role in desiccated Boea leaves even under very weak light conditions.展开更多

In high plants, the LHC gene family constituting the light-harvesting complex ofphotosystems I and II. the transfer of solar energy using light-harvesting chlorophyll includes LHCA and LHCB sub-families, which encode proteins Zostera marina L. is a monocotyledonous angiosperm and inhab- its submerged marine environments rather than land environments. We characterized the Lhca and Lhcb gene families of Z. marina from the expressed sequence tags (EST) database. In total, 13 unigenes were annotated as ZmLhc, 6 in Lhca family and 7 in ZmLhcb family. ZmLHCA and ZmLHCB contained the conservative LHC motifs and amino acid residues binding chlorophyll. The average similarity among mature ZmLHCA and ZmLHCB was 48.91% and 48.66%, respectively, which indicated a high degree of diver- gence within ZmLHChc gene family. The reconstructed phylogenetic tree showed that the tree topology and phylogenetic relation- ship were similar to those reported in other high plants, suggesting that the Lhc genes were highly conservative and the classification of ZmLhc genes was consistent with the evolutionary position of Z. marina. Real-time reverse transcription (RT) PCR analysis showed that different members of ZmLhca and ZmLhcb responded to a stress in different expression patterns. Salinity, temperature, light intensity and light quality may affect the expression of most ZmLhca and ZmLhcb genes. Inorganic carbon concentration and acidity had no obvious effect on ZmLhca and ZmLhcb gene expression, except for ZmLhca6.展开更多

Samples werecollected from four cruises in January and June 2003, and January and June 2004. The results showthat the vertical distribution of Chl-a and Pha-a in the sediment layers 0-2cm, 2-5cm and 5-8cm,follows a stable ratio, 5:3:2. The average ratio of Pha-a to Chl-a in sediment is 2.83. Spearman2-tailed rank correlation analysis shows that Chl-a and Pha-a contents in each sediment layer have ahighly significant correlation. The average contents of Chl-a and Pha-a in the sediment of the0-8cm layer in the investigated area are 0.31-0.47 μg g^(-1) and 1.28-1.40 μg g^(-1) sediment (dryweight), respectively. The average Chl-a and Pha-a contents in sediment are higher in summer thanin winter. ANOVA analysis shows that there is a highly significant variation among the Chl-acontents (P = 0.002 【 0.01) of the four cruies, but this is not true for the case of Pha-a content(P = 0.766 】0.05). The average Chl-a and Pha-a contents in the 2 sediment layers (0-2cm and 2-5cm)have significant or highly significant correlations with organic matter (OM), median diameter(Md_φ), silt plus clay percentage in the January 2003 cruise. In the June 2003 cruise, the averageChl-a content in the 3 sediment layers (0-2cm, 2-5cm, and 5-8cm) has a significant correlation withmeiofauna biomass, and Pha-a content has highly significant correlations with water depth, bottomwater temperature, OM and Md_φ. The contents of Chl-a and Pha-a are lower than those in estuariesand intertidal areas, but close to those in the same area studied previously.展开更多

Typhoons Nari and Wipha passed through the Yellow Sea on September 13, 2007 and the East China Sea(ECS) on September 16, 2007, respectively. The SST and Chl- a data were obtained from the Aqua/Terra MODIS and NOAA18, respectively, and the temperature and salinity in the southeast of the study area were observed in situ from Argo. The average SST within the study area dropped from 26.33°C on September 10 to a minimum of 22.79°C on September 16. Without the usual phenomenon of ‘right bias', the most striking response of SST was in the middle of the typhoons' tracks, near to coastal waters. Strong cooling of the upper layers of the water column was probably due to increased vertical mixing, discharge from the Changjiang River estuary, and heavy rainfall. During the typhoons, average Chl-a increased by 11.54% within the study area and by 21.69% in the off shore area near to the southeast ECS. From September 1 to 13, average Chl-a was only 0.10 mg/m^3 in the of fshore waters but it reached a peak of >0.17 mg/m^3 on September 18. This large increase in Chl-a concentration in of fshore waters might have been triggered by strong vertical mixing, upwelling induced by strong typhoons, and sedimentation and nutrient infl ux following heavy rainfall.展开更多

Capitata f. alba) leaves. Photochemical efficiency of photosystem Ⅱ (PS Ⅱ) was studied by a pulse amplitude modulated chlorophyll fluorescence apparatus, chlorophyll concentration was analysis spectrophotometrically and xanthophyll cycle pigments were estimated by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Leaf senescence was accompanied with a decrease both in chlorophylls concentration, the photochemical efficiency and rate constant for PS Ⅱ photochemistry whereas non-photochemical parameters increased. Excitation pressure (1-qP) which is a measure of relative lumen acidification increased by 1.2x in aging leaves. The maximum quantum yield of PS Ⅱ showed no significant change. The level of de-epoxidised xanthophylls increased but the concentration of mono- and di-epoxy xanthophylls decreased in aging leaves. A linear relationship between the excitation pressure and the depoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pigments and lutein, during the onset of senescence suggests that excitation pressure can be used as a sensor for monitoring the onset of senescence as well for the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophylls responsible for non-photochemical quenching in stressed leaves.展开更多

However, there were concerns on the impact of shrimp farming on the mangrove ecosystem due to the discharge of shrimp pond water to the surrounding environment and potential self-pollution through the intake of surrounding water for the shrimp ponds. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to determine the water quality of the harvesting pond water and quantify the pollutants loadings. Samplings were conducted in three ponds and three channels near the pond outflow in a commercial shrimp farm during complete draining of water at harvest. Results indicated that TSS and Chl-a were high in both the ponds and channels. Total ammonia-nitrogen was the predominant form of the inorganic nitrogen and the mean values in both the ponds and channels were more than 1 mg/L which exceeded the maximum recommended for fish. Therefore, the water quality of the ponds and channel indicate that pond effluent should not be discharged directly into the surrounding environment but treated and nutrients recovered. Loads of total suspended solids, BODs, inorganic nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, soluble reactive phosphorus and Chl-a of the effluent were quantified.展开更多

The results revealed that the main factors to infulence the percentages of penetration and stemflow were the air temperature and the leaf area of the forest. The quantity of seepage through the litter layer was much larger than that through the soil layers which decreased sharply with soil depth. The output of water from the ecosystem by surface runoff and deep infiltration through the soil was much lower, only being 5.20 percent of the rainfall, while the water evapotranspiration loss was as large as more than 90 percent of it. The losses by the soil evaporation and plant evapotranspiration were the largest part of output in this forest ecosystem.展开更多
