A control group was fed to satiation twice daily for 185 days; four treatment groups were fed at intervals of 2, 3, 4 or 7 days(dietary ‘restricted' period, days 0–80) and then fed to satiation(‘refeeding' period, days 80–185). Compensatory growth in weight and length of the feed-restricted groups was observed during the refeeding period. However, the growth of none of the restricted groups caught up with that of the control group over the experimental period. Feed intake upon refeeding increased with the duration of deprivation. There were no significant differences in feed efficiency between the restricted and control groups during the refeeding stage, suggesting that hyperphagia was the mechanism responsible for the increased growth rates during this period. Tilapia preferentially used n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and nonessential amino acids during the restricted-feeding period. Higher production was achieved by higher feed consumption. We suggest that if attainment of market size in minimum time is required, fish should be consistently fed to satiation, while taking care to avoid the possible negative consequences of overfeeding.展开更多

Hyperplasia and hypertrophy of muscle fibers were studied by histology. The fish were cultivated in cages in a dam and as they grew they were weighed and measured in length. In tissue samples, it was evaluated the quantity of cells area~ and the diameter of the white, pink and red muscle fibers. The supreme strain presented greater number of white and pink fibers mm2 and smaller number of red fibers when compared to the Thai strain. 5-10 cm fish presented higher number of white, pink and red fibers mm: and smaller average diameter of the white and pink fibers, when compared to a 10-15 cm fish. The average diameter of the white and pink fibers increased in 10-15 cm fish, compared to 5-10 era. White fibers smaller than 10 ~tm were found only in the 5-10 cm supreme strain. Tilapias of Thai and supreme strain presented different standard distribution of red, pink and white muscle fibers. Supreme strain, genetically improved, presented higher hyperplasia of white fibers than Thai strain, and this can indicate its higher potential growth.展开更多

This bitter-tasting compound, which is found in the leaves, improves liver and gall bladder function, stimulates the secretion of digestive juices, especially bile, and lowers blood cholesterol levels. The leaves are anticholesterolemic, antirheumatic, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, hypoglycaemic and lithontripic. BEDGEN 40 , a compound made with Cynara scolymus L. (artichoke) extract and choline chloride was evaluated for growth performance and anti-oxidant activity in tilapia. There were four treatment groups; group 1 was fed only with a basal diet and served as the control, group 2 - 4 were experimental groups that received 150, 300, or 600 mg/kg BEDGEN 40 , respectively, added to the basal diet and fed for 8 weeks. The results showed signifi- cant differences for weight gain, feed conversion, and protein efficiency in fish diets containing 150, 300, or 600 mg/kg BEDGEN 40 compared to the control. Generally, BEDGEN 40 improved the body condition factor and hepatosomatic index of tilapia, and reduced liver fat content. Fish consum- ing BEDGEN 40 also exhibited improved liver antioxidant status. BEDGEN 40 (300, or 600 mg/kg) was also found to significantly reduce the mortality of tilapia subsequently challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila.展开更多
